Complete directions for a sofa- and double-comforter sized Snowflake quilt appear in the November/December 2003 (#94) issue of Quiltmaker magazine. These two additional snowflake template patterns are provided free for our readers!
The blocks look complex, but are easy to sew. Correct piecing order and proper pressing are key to creating great-looking blocks. In the block diagrams shown, we've used both of the foundation patterns given here.
For each hexagonal block, foundation-piece 12 triangle sections from the patterns provided. Join them to make 6 diamonds; press the seam allowances open. Next, add two solid (non-pieced) triangle patches on either side of one diamond to create equilateral triangles. Press these seam allowances away from the foundations. Join 3 triangles to make a half block. Press seam allowances open. Repeat for other half. Join the halves and press seam allowances open.
