This pattern is an adaptation of Lullaby in Birdland, a quilt in our fifth newsstand special issue, Quiltmaker's All-Time Favorites - Spring '02.  Making the Quilt Top

Following the piecing diagram, join the patches to make the center, pressing seam allowances as shown.

 Applique

Prepare the J patch for applique using your favorite method. Center and blindstitch J on the A.

Prepare L, M and Mr patches for applique. Arrange the birds as you wish and blindstitch them in place.

Sew the border side strips to the quilt. Trim any extra length and press seam allowances away from the quilt center. Add the top and bottom border strips in the same way.

 Marking the Quilting

Trace the Blue Sky Quilting motifs from the insert. Following the quilting placement diagram, mark in the sky the motif and the reverse motif shown in red. Adjust as needed to fill the sky. In the border, mark parallel lines 1" apart. Or use the alternate Leaf Trail Quilting motif if the border is a simple print, as shown in the issue.

Finish the quilt as described in step 5 of the pattern in the magazine. Add a sleeve to display your banner on a wall or door.
