QM staff were joined by authors Charlotte Angotti and Debbie Caffrey for this year's Staff Challenge to put the guidelines found in their book Surprise Yourself into action. We could use 4 basic units—Four Patch, half- and quarter-square triangles and Flying Geese—finishing at 3", 6", 9" or 12", along with squares and rectangles. Armed with a fabric line from one of our fabric partners, we each played with the shapes and went where our designing hearts took us.
For this year’s challenge, we played with “On the Grid,” block #774 designed by Melissa Corry for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, volume 8. We used a 4 x 4 block layout with a 4" finished border for a 56"x 56" quilt.
We invited 2 former Scrap Squad members to participate in the challenge. Each of us took a different approach as we changed values, recolored and rotated blocks to create interesting and unique designs. See all of the creative designs in the following slides. Notice that each of the designs has different fabric placements in the blocks.
