Hide and Seek |

Designed by Theresa Eisinger and sewn by Pamela Thomas.
This super simple quilt is great for sharing the art of quiltmaking with a child. See Teaching Kids To Quilt for tips on quilting with children, and for more detailed instructions on each step of the quiltmaking process, see our Basic Lessons.
This Hide and Seek pattern is also a popular project for charity events. Easy-to-cut patches go together quickly to make two basic blocks. Machine quilting makes it a snap to stitch up quick.
Cutting the Patches Refer to the yardage box for appropriate fabric and yardages. Wash each fabric separately and rinse until the water runs clear. Damp dry and iron.
From the pink print, cut the border strips parallel to the selvedges; then cut the A patches. Cut the A's from the other fabrics as listed in the yardage box.
If your fabric for the B patches is one-directional, cut 18 B's horizontally and 17 B's vertically.
Dimensions of diagrammed patch include seam allowances. Cut size as given.
Making the Blocks
Sew fabrics right sides together with 1/4" seam allowances.
After each seam is sewn, press the seam allowances as shown in the corresponding diagram.

Assembly
Adding the Squared Borders Fold each border strip in half and finger press to mark the center. Matching centers, pin a side border to each side of the quilt. Sew them together and trim the excess border fabric even with the quilt. Press seam allowances toward the border strips.
Matching centers, pin and sew the top and bottom border strips to the quilt. Trim the excess fabric even with the side borders. Press seam allowances toward the border strips.

Marking the Quilting
Refer to the section of "Basic Lessons" titled "Marking For Quilting" to make tracings of the Just Ducky motifs. Reversing some motifs as shown in the quilting placement diagram, transfer the design to the A's.
Mark the corner quilting motif in each corner. Matching the dots, repeat the water line from the A patch 21 times along the side border strips and 15 times along the top and bottom strips.
Partial Quilting Placement
Preparing the Lining
Sew the lining panels together along the 108" edges. Press the seam allowances to one side.
Basting and Quilting
Refer to the "Basic Lessons" for "Basting" and "Quilting By Hand or Machine".
The waves in Just Ducky may be quilted by machine. You may find the ducks easiest to quilt by hand since these lines are not continuous. Quilt the patches and borders as marked. Quilt the B's in-the-ditch and around some images in the fabric print or as shown in the partial quilting diagram. When quilting is complete, remove basting stitches except along the raw edges of the quilt.
Binding the Quilt
Trim the batting and lining to the raw edges of the quilt top.
Make a "Double Fold Binding" as described in "Basic Lessons" and sew to enclose the quilt's edges.
Adding a Label
To record any information you wish, such as your name, the date and where you live, embroider or write with permanent pen on a separate piece of fabric. Turn under the raw edges and sew to the quilt lining.
