Applique techniques

I am really interested in designing and making applique quilts. Do any of you know a great sites for learning different techniques? Which do you prefer? By hand or machine? Which do you thinks looks "prettier"?

I have attached links to photos of quilts for a general idea of the type of applique style I am trying to learn. I'm also very interested in the Hawaiin style/technique.
