100 Blocks Giveaway: Snow Shoo

The name for my block, Snow Shoo, was inspired by two things. The fabrics have a ’snow’ theme, and the basic grid is  similar to the traditional shoofly block.

QMMS-091033-P-THERESA-E

If you’ve been following our blog for a while, this block might look a little familiar. I designed it to show off fabrics I designed and had printed on Spoonflower, and blogged about it back in July. It’s a fun and quick block to piece, so when it came time to make my block for this special issue, I decided to use the same design.

Several of the blocks in this issue use fabrics from a single line by one manufacturer. Snow Shoo uses the Snow Days line by Mary Jo Tuttle for Connecting Threads. When you pick fabrics for a quilt, do you try to choose fabrics that you know will ‘go together’ because they were designed in the same line, or do you like to mix colors and styles from a variety of manufacturers? I’ll pick someone at random from the comments after 10 am MST on Friday morning 11/13 to win a 100 blocks issue.

And the winner is: #23, Wendy. Congratulations! Wendy will receive a copy of our 100 Blocks issue.

Calling Electric Quilt Fans

I can tell from your comments that many of you visiting our blog tour this week are EQ users. Do you know about the QM-EQ Design Contest? There’s a post here with info and you’ll find the entry form and official rules here.

Jenny at EQ made a sample to show a virtual quilt with virtual quilting:

QM-EQ Contest Sample: Quilting Designs from Vol. 3

QM-EQ Contest Sample: Quilting Designs from Vol. 3

Start designing–we might be making your design in a quilt! The Grand Prize includes Quiltmaker making the winning design into a quilt that the winner will get to keep. Entries are due by 10 pm MST on 12/1/09. You can use any combination of quilting designs from any of the seven volumes of Quilting Designs.

Tell me by 3 pm MST Friday, Nov. 13 if you use EQ to create your own quilts. (And, yes I’ll give away another copy of 100 Blocks to a random commenter.)

Congratulations to Norma #2 who wins a copy of 100 Blocks. Now, for all of you who design with EQ, I want to see your submissions into this design contest!

100 Blocks: Roundabout

Designing blocks has been a passion of mine for a long time  so, of course, I was excited to design a block for this special issue. I have always been drawn to the Log Cabin and Roundabout is based on a Log Cabin variation. To add some interest to the block, I decided to piece the colored “logs” from 1″ squares. When the sections are sewn together, it looks like there are two different blocks that alternate.

My original thought when I designed this block was that it would look nice sewn in a straight setting.

I used EQ6 to draw the quilt in a straight set.

It looks like there are two blocks that float on a white background. I wondered what it would look like in a diagonal setting.

I tried a black background to see what would happen.

I know which one is my favorite. Leave me a comment letting me know which one you like, and I’ll randomly select one person Thursday around 10 to receive a copy of our 100 Blocks from Today’s Top Designers.

It was a revelation to me when I started coloring this design in EQ. When I designed this block, I was drawn to the combination of 30s prints on a white background that I had seen in a different quilt. That’s what I had in mind for this block. And I still like that combination. But when I decided to color the background black, I realized how much it made the design pop. In case you’re wondering, my favorite is the diagonal set on black—it seems like a lot of you agree. A couple people commented that they would like to see partial blocks in the triangles around the edges. I also tried that in EQ and it did look nice, but I decided to just post the diagonal sets with plain setting triangles to “float” the design.

And, now for the winner: #17, Jane. Congratulations! Jane will receive a copy of our 100 Blocks issue.
