Charmed, I’m Sure – Exchange with your friends + free block pattern

Hi! Welcome back! Did you work on cutting your scraps into charm squares? It’s amazing how fast your charms can grow.

One thing I wanted to share with you today is how to organize a charm square exchange with your quilty friends. It’s good to give plenty of advance notice to your friends since there’s a bit of cutting involved. This works great with a minimum of 8 people, but you can adapt as needed.

1. Cut a 5″ wide strip of fabric (selvage to selvage). Cut this strip into 8 – 5″ squares. Separate into 8 piles. Repeat with 49 more fabrics until each pile has 50 – 5″ squares. One word of advice about exchanges. Please make sure to use only high quality quilting cotton—give the quality fabric you would like to receive. I like to cut my fabrics over time to make it less tedious.

2. Put each pile into a separate baggie.

3. When your 7 other quilty friends have gathered, each person will get 8 baggies of 50 charm squares each or 400 different charms!

4. If your group has between 8-15 members, here’s how to make the exchange work. Each member still brings 8 baggies of 50 charm squares each. Let’s say there’s 15 people (adapt as necessary for less). Give everyone a number from 1-15. Place numbers 1-15 on a table or floor. Person #1 puts one baggie on each of numbers 1-8. Person #2 puts a baggie on each of numbers 2-9. Person #3 puts a baggie on each of numbers 3-10. Continue in this same manner. When you get to person #9, she’ll put a baggie on numbers 9-15 and number 1. Keep going – you’re almost done. The last person (#15) starts at 15 and ends at 7. Does this make sense? Each number will have 8 baggies of charm squares. Each person takes the pile that corresponds with her number.

Let’s make a new block. It’s another simple one and makes a fun quilt.

Sew the patches together to make 2 quarter blocks (always press seams toward the dark fabric). Trim the extra 1/2″ on the rectangle. This unit should measure 4 1/2″ square.

When arranging blocks for your quilt, alternate the direction of each block so lights and darks are opposite each other.

Try different fabric combinations – holiday-themed fabrics, Patriotic, novelty for a baby quilt or just a good ole scrappy quilt.
