Quiltmaker’s Scrap Squad is a select group of eight QM readers. They take one pattern from each regular issue and make scrappy versions to inspire you.
The Scrap Squad quilt for this issue was designed and made by Carolyn McCormick, designer of the Add-A-Quarter ruler. It’s called Star Search.
Today’s featured quilt is by Carol Hubacek from Schererville, Indiana. You’ll hear from Carol in her own words below.

Visual cues get my creative juices flowing. The quilting motif chosen for Star Search said “argyle” from first glance. The journey begins.
A half yard of this fabric serves as my inspiration for color, but never makes an appearance in the finished product.
Half yards of color ready to go…
…and now they are cut and ready to piece.
I chose to simplify things with a template. No plastic handy, so I used six layers of freezer paper instead. Keeping scraps under control sometimes calls for constructing blocks one at a time. No production chain stitching here.
Above, the all-important design wall and camera. I needed to see the photo to appreciate that right hand point gone awry.
When I decided that 1/8″ grosgrain ribbon would accentuate the argyle quilted lines, I took a stab at estimating my needs. Let’s just say that 50 yards was not quite enough and I needed to wait for a second postal delivery.
A pieced back.
The finished quilt is fresh and bright.

Quite different from the red quilt, isn’t it? Another wonderful job by Carol of QM’s incredible Scrap Squad.
