Each day next week, Sept. 16 to 20, please join us here on Quilty Pleasures for a free quilt pattern in bite-size morsels, tips and techniques and giveaways galore!

The idea of the Back to School Party is to celebrate fall with a fun, easy new project. You’ll find camaraderie, guidance and inspiration each day as we work on the quilt together. The quilt is called Playground; it was designed by Denise Russart.

We knew you’d need some time to gather sewing supplies so today we’re sharing a diagram and photos of Playground along with the yardage requirements. The grayscale quilt diagram below is keyed to the fabrics in the yardage further down.

Playground is a 56″ x 70″ throw. Each block finishes at 10″ x 10″.

You can move the values around in this design. In other words, the dark fabric (called “black” but doesn’t need to actually be black) could go into the position where the dotted squares are now, or wherever you’d like to put it. The lightest fabric could go into the rings, or could be swapped with the dark, or whatever tickles your fancy. Please keep reading because there are lots of examples below.

So much potential to make the quilt look however you’d like! If you want to use scraps, you can choose “families” of colors or values and it will look great. This weekend I’ll have a whole post about how to make a successful scrap quilt from this pattern.

To help you plan your own quilt, if you wish, print the fabric chart below. Just click on the chart and it will pop up separately, and then you can print it. Customize it by plugging in your own fabric choices.

We’ll give you the first step of Playground construction on Monday, Sept. 16. During the party you’ll also get to meet our team of reader-sewers, and we’ll have daily doses of learning. Plan to take photos of your quilt along the way so that we can share them with everyone and multiply the fun. I’ll see you at the party!

I just get a search page for playgrounds??

  18. Susan says:

Can’t get the link to work–get a page not found error. Tried adding the 3rd w to the beginning of the address, and got to a page, but it says, “Opps! We can’f find what you’re looking for. We tried, but we just can’t find the web page you asked for. The page might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Or maybe the link you’re following simply has a typo and isn’t pointing to the right place.”

  19. Sally says:

link to pdf doesn’t work! (so I copied it, put in a doc and converted to pdf) it would certainly be easier if it had worked! Mssing the first “w” at beginning, but it didn’t work even when I typed in the address. What’s up?

cannot get the link for the chart to work. tried several times and it just wont go
