Playground Part 5: Quilting, Binding and Labeling

Layer and baste together the backing, batting and quilt top. Refer to the quilting placement diagram below.

Outline quilt the rings in the block Y’s as shown. Quilt gentle curves in the block Z’s and the sections as shown. Quilt the borders in the ditch. Quilt straight lines approximately 1″ apart in border #2. Bind the quilt. Every quilt needs a label, so we asked Denise Starck, QM’s Graphic Designer, to create one. She used the Back to School logo and added lines to personalize.

    For my favorite I would pick …… hard to just pick one when I love all of them. Each quilt had an appeal. I would love to have any of these lovely creations in my home!

    I like todays (the red one surprises me), and the one with the rainbow prints on black backgrounds. Love today’s fabrics!

    I love red and the last fabrics shown –Florence for Free Spirit is my favorite. Loved this week- it really showed how even though it was one pattern, colors and patterns of different fabrics can change the whole quilt.

    I like lavonna’s quilt as it seems to follow the pattern closer than the rest and means mine will be looking good when done! The brighter ones are also right up my alley, but for once I followed suggestions as given! :)

    “Always Blooming” with “Sunnyside” a close second. Flowers are my big thing, that’s what drew me to them. Would love to fussy cut the flowers in “Always Blooming” for a quilt I’d like to make for myself.

    My favorite is the Northcott Stonehenge version made by Marijke Vroomen Durning. The colors just work so well with this pattern, especially at this time of year

    Marijke Vroomen Durning’s is my favorite -so rich and fallish looking – great for a man or woman as a gift, or as a nice fall accent to a sofa or chair. mmmmm – cozy!

    All the quilts showed a lot of ingenuity. Sharon’s was my particular favorite, simply because it was FUN! The crayon and school supplies fabrics were just fun. Hopefully, I’ll have time to catch up on completing mine before the instructions are gone! Thanks for the quilt-a-long, I’ve enjoyed it!

    My favorite is probably Krista Yokum’s blue quilt made with Sunnyside, but I liked them all and I really like that you always provide more options of both colors and layout. This was fun. Thanks.

    I like all the fabrics in each quilt so am not sure I could pick a favorite. I think my favorite thing is actually seeing all the different looks in a single pattern from the variety of fabrics.

    I think I prefer the Free Spirit (I’m more of a traditionalist :) ) but I am learning to understand and appreciate the new modern asthetic and this pattern may get me to try making a modern version one of my own.

    Oh my – a favorite??! Tough to choose, but I’m currently in a kind of “jewel tone” mood. I guess I’d pick the Sudio Stash colors in Lavonnas quilt. They are all beautiful and I love seeing the same quilt done in different color ways.

    Studio Stash is really nice . I really like the way Lavonna placed the fabrics. I would use the fabric in almost any quilt; it would be fun to work with.

    Tough choice, but the blues in Sunnyside by Moda (Krista’s quilt) held my eyes the longest.

    I like the Bali Batiks best, but I’d love any of the three bundles. I like all styles of quilts modern is intriguing me, but I’m usually a traditional pattern user.

    I was drawn to Irene’s quilt for several reasons. A. Her name, Irene is not that common and it was the name of my grandmother. B. The colors of her quilt, remind me of my grandmother’s flower garden…she had a very green thumb. C.I love how bright and cheerful Irene’s quilt is!!! All of the quilts are lovely though, it was hard choosing just one.

    I liked them all as well, but my favorite version was, Marijke’s with the Stonehenge fabrics from Northcott. It is so gorgeous! The one with the Kate Spain fabric was a close second. Each and everyone of them is fabulous! Great job everyone!

    The bright fabrics fit perfectly with the name Playground.

    My favorites are the rich deep colors (jewel tones) of the Studio Stash fabrics and the earthy tones of Stonehenge from Northcott.

    It is really hard to decide what I like best, if I were doing this for a youngster I would want the bright colors but for a more mature persons gift I would choose the deeper richer colors.

    Thank you all for this great pattern and color/fabric choices, truly hard decisions to have an absolute favorite.

    I loved them all but if had to choose an absoulte favorite it would be Irene. Love the bright cheerful colors for a little girl. That special first granddaughter I am making this for.     It’s hard to choose a favorite as they are all so pretty in their own way, but I would say Lavonna’s is my favorite…..I love the use of grays with the pop of colorful rings.

    Jeannie’s quilt using Florence fabrics by Denyse Schmidt – oh, I just thought this really represented the ‘playground’ pattern. They were all wonderful and it was interesting to hear firsthand how each dealt with their bundle of fabric and the pattern.

    I think I like the one by Melinda Bledsoe best. (Melinda sewed with Always Blooming by Susy Pilgrim Waters for P&B Textiles) I like the way she used the large flowers in the blocks.

    I like Lavona’s best. I love the fabric line. Not sure how I feel about the stripe fabrics because those blocks stand out a bit too much, but overall I love it.

    I like this one: Lavonna Zeller-Williams-Bratschi from Happy Valley, Oregon. And the reason I like this one isn’t so much the front….but the BACK!!! It’s creative, gorgeous, and she frugally uses leftover scraps! Love it!
