The week is flying by—already we are on Day 4 of Quiltmaker’s Back to School Party. Making the Playground quilt is not a race, so take your time and enjoy the process. After all, that’s why we make quilts, isn’t it? It’s all about enjoying life more. None of us needs more stress. What we need is more joy, more creativity, more satisfaction from a job well done. Did you realize that quilting can add all of that to our lives? Pretty amazing, isn’t it?

BTS13 quiltfullsize Back to School Party: Day 4 and Giveaway! The Back to School quilt, called Playground, was designed by Denise Russart. Today we’ll give you Part 4 of the construction and show you two more versions of the quilt. If you missed them, here are the posts leading up to Part 4.

Read all the way through the next paragraph before proceeding.

(Optional: See one Back to School sewer’s recommended method of stabilizing the edges using fusible web before trimming.) Refer to the trimming diagram below. Align your ruler ¼” beyond the fabric #15 D corners in the sections as shown. Trim the sections along all sides of the quilt. Handle the quilt top carefully so as not to stretch the bias edges.

BTS13 trimming Back to School Party: Day 4 and Giveaway!Once the trimming is complete, join the border #1 strips end to end. Cut this strip into 2 lengths of 63″ for the sides and 2 lengths of 53″ for the top and bottom. Sew the border #1 side strips to the quilt and trim any extra length. Add the border #1 top and bottom strips in the same way. Repeat to add border #2.

Your quilt top is complete! That’s all for today.

  19. Barb Johnson says:

I currently am working on a few projects to reduce my scraps. 1) I am making churn dash blocks out of a charm square and a coordinating 2 1/2 strip. They are really cute and they finish at 5″. I’m not sure how I am going to set them, but they are good for a leader/ender project. 2) I have some tone-on-tone 6 inch squares (that I really don’t remember acquiring), and I am using them to make a slightly bigger version of block in Pat Speth’s original Nickel Quilts book. 3) I am also putting together some star blocks using WOW and bright scraps that will probably end up as a baby or toddler quilt. I think that’s all that I am actively working on, but that changes by the day, depending on what strikes my fancy!

Those are great fabrics. I am currently working on a string quilt. The pattern is by Bonnie Hunter. I am doing the quilt in a wide varienty oranges and neutrals. I am also working on a baby quilt that is way late getting to the baby. And also some blocks to donate to a QOV project that Alycia has going on at alyciaquilts.blogspot.com. Whew! 30. JOY says:

Looks like one string quilt is going to turn into two, there are so many. Or they are multiplying on their own while I sleep!

  64. Helen says:

I am working on a simple pink & white throw-sized quilt. Although pink is not my favorite color, I am doing this for a door-prize for a Zumba-thon called the Boob-a-thon Oct. 27. My daughter is one in a group of Zumba instructors in Topeka, KS who are doing this as a fund-raiser for free/reduced cost mammograms for women in their county. Currently (as many of us) have about a gazillion projects in progress. To keep me on my toes and keep from getting bored or not knowing what to do I made a “Projects in Progress” jar. I wrote each project I was working on down on an individual index card and folded them up and put them in the jar. When I can’t decide what to work on and have no items pressing to be done I pick a card out of the jar and work on that. Todays card is … drumroll … a turning twenty quilt for my friend Merideth made out of typewritter fabric. And I will be putting the finishing touches on a spongebob cape for a very special 2 year olds birthday.
