I’ve been having some fun with two rulers from Julie Herman at Jaybird Quilts.
Julie taught classes at QM’s Block Party in Portland featuring Hex N More, and her students loved seeing all that this tool can do. She’s developed lots of cool patterns too. You can use the rulers with the patterns, but you can also use the patterns without the rulers if you prefer.
This is what I’ve been playing with. It will be similar to Julie’s Lotus design.
My pieced units will finish at 6″ from point to point. The Lotus quilt uses a bigger unit.
There are just two patches so far: a “jewel” shape (on the right) and a small 60◦ triangle, both cut using the Hex N More. The jewel is cut from a 2.5″ strip, as you can see below.
I started with a bundle of Barcelona by Brigitte Heitland for Zen Chic for Moda.
I used this fabric in Onyx for my palette: black, gray, teal, orange and yellow-green.
Then I pulled fabrics from my stash and started cutting.
You also want to broaden your thinking about each color. I’m not afraid to use several different versions of orange.
The same is true for the teal. I have tints, tones and shades; light, medium, dark. It’s all going to work.
My semi-annual quilt retreat is coming up and I think I’ll take this along. It’s easy sewing and you get exciting results quickly. It will be perfect work to do while chatting with quilty friends.
This is Giggles, one of the new patterns using the new Sidekick ruler.
And this is Rock Candy, again using the Sidekick. Aren’t they fresh and fun?
Check out the Hex N More and Sidekick rulers at Jaybird Quilts. You’ll find them, along with Julie’s fun and unique patterns (with great instructions), at many quilt shops. See “Where to Buy.” Quiltmaker is pleased to partner with Jaybird Quilts to bring you these great new products.
