Book Review: Quilt Titles You’ll Like; Giveaway!

I’ve had the fun of looking over a number of quilt books lately so I wanted to share them with you. Read to the end of the post for instructions on a chance to win one for yourself.

Big-Print Patchwork: Quilt Patterns for Large-Scale Prints
by Sandy Turner (Martingale, $24.99)

b1154 c Book Review: Quilt Titles Youll Like; Giveaway!

Big-Print Patchwork

Many of us have done it: purchased a beautiful large-scale print and then wondered what to do with it. Sandy Turner to the rescue! Big-Print Patchwork is more than just a pattern book. Sandy helps you understand how to combine these fabrics with traditional blocks so that you can take her lead and design your own quilt with your own fabrics. While there are complete patterns for seven quilts, the quilt gallery of 15 more designs will be just as useful. Soon you’ll be sewing your own big prints into designs you can be proud of.

Patchwork Palette: No-Fail Color Plans for Captivating Quilts
by Donna Lynn Thomas (Martingale, $26.99)

b1132 c Book Review: Quilt Titles Youll Like; Giveaway!

Patchwork Palette

A book that begins with “I am an unapologetic fabric collector!” holds a lot of promise. Donna Lynn Thomas delivers on her subtitle: No-Fail Color Plans for Captivating Quilts. She likes to use many fabrics in her quilts, but in a controlled manner. She uses three fabric recipes—the Rainbow, the Color Family and the Mixed—and she teaches you to use them, too. She covers hue, value and scale and gives patterns for 13 quilts, and then shows each one in an alternate color recipe. It’s a whole lot of inspiration you’ll be happy to own!

Revival: A Study of Early 20th Century Colonial Revival Quilts
by the American Quilt Study Group (Kansas City Star Quilts, $27.95)

revival Book Review: Quilt Titles Youll Like; Giveaway!

Revival!

From the back cover: “Old-fashioned, homespun, noble. The Colonial Revival era linked quiltmakers’ busy hands with a longing for the past, especially Colonial times. Members of the American Quilt Study Group accepted the challenge to study quilts of this era in the best way—by making reproductions of Colonial Revival quilts. See the results of their hands-on study: examining an inspiration quilt, the pattern, the fabrics, the way these quilts were constructed and quilted. Included are 28 study quilts, with patterns for 10. If it is true that we learn best by doing, AQSG member who participate in the quilt studies learn and share in the best way possible!”

If you enjoy quilt history, I highly recommend this title. I hope it won’t be the last one AQSG does, based on a study project. Really outstanding!

Diamond Traditions: 11 Multifaceted Quilts by Monique Dillard
(C&T Publishing, $19.95)

10925 frontcover Book Review: Quilt Titles Youll Like; Giveaway!

Diamond Traditions by Monique Dillard

Monique Dillard of Open Gate Quilts has been a friend of Quiltmaker‘s for a long time. She has repeatedly appeared in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks and she taught for us at QM’s Block Party in Williamsburg last year. We’re happy to recommend her book Diamond Traditions. The quilts are mostly geometric designs and will give you lots of piecing practice. I love the quilt below, called Radiance, because it takes a minute to understand where the block is. It’s the kind of quilt that holds your attention!

monique Book Review: Quilt Titles Youll Like; Giveaway!

Radiance by Monique Dillard appears in the book Diamond Traditions.

You’ll find this and 10 more designs in Monique’s book. Be sure to check out the border fabrics she uses—enough inspiration there alone to make it a good investment!

I hope you’ll take a look at all of these titles. You won’t be disappointed.

How about a giveaway? I’d love to send these to Quilty Pleasures readers. Please leave a comment here before midnight on Tuesday, June 4 and tell me which one looks most interesting to you. I’ll choose winners mid-week and post them here. Good luck!

The winners have been chosen and notified. They are #45 Terri, #13 Joanna, #19 Mary Jo, #81 Linda and #16 Sue. Thanks to everyone who participated!

I’ve started working on the Simple Life quilt and I’m finding problem with the directions for cutting out the fabrics. Some are off as much as 1/2″. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, does anyone know where I can go to the the correct cutting directions???

May I clone myself? I would love one of each of these books, but I “need” the large print one since my guild gave us a large print fabric for our club challenge and I have no idea what I am going to do with 7″ flowers!! But as a farm wife, the Farm Fresh has lots of cute shapes that would fit in with my quilt designs. Good luck as you decide who gets one of these great books. Kathy in rural Colorado

  34. VickiT says:

What a great group of books to choose from.
I would love to have Monique’s book Diamond Traditions: 11 Multifaceted Quilts. I have most of her rulers so I’m sure the book would take advantage of using those.

You didn’t ask, but my second choice would be the Big-Print Patchwork: Quilt Patterns for Large-Scale Prints. I bought fabrics to make my husband a quilt before I got more knowledgable in quilting and sadly, I learned very quickly those were all large scale prints which are very hard to use in a quilt. I’d love that book too so it will definitely be going on my wish list as well.

Farm fresh quilts is a book close to my family’s heart. My husband is a retired dairy farmer and now “keeps bees.” He lost a large part of his hives during our long winter but is at it again this spring. I am always on the look-out for ideas for quilts for our home and for our children and grandchildren. It is just sooo important for them to know the reason and the beauty of our past life and the one we wish for them.
