Quiltmaker’s Scrap Squad is a select group of eight QM readers. They take one pattern from each regular issue and make scrappy versions to inspire you.
The featured Scrap Squad quilt in Quiltmaker’s May/June issue is Mandarin Express, below.
It was designed by Robin Waggoner from Spokane Valley, Washington. Robin and Sandy Odeen pieced it, and Robin quilted it. The batiks are from Hoffman California Fabrics.
Today’s featured quilt is by Christa Marcotte from Torquay, Saskatchewan, Canada. Christa blogs at Second Story Quilting. You’ll hear from her in her own words below.

I decided to go with a red, white and black color scheme for our second task for Scrap Squad, Robin Waggoner’s Mandarin Express.
With the green flag dropped, I was off!!
I do not have Electric Quilt so I did it the old fashioned way.
I recently took a class from Anna Hergert on pattern changing
and loved the ‘good old way.’
A little primitive but it works.
I sure could use some practice on my coloring skills!!
This antique car print gave me the idea to make it a racing/car themed quilt.
With some fast chain paper piecing…
And block assembly, this quilt whipped up pretty fast!
With Block 1
And Block 2 completed….
It was just a matter of laying them out and sewing them together.
I like how there is a focus of white stars and long armed red stars.
Can you see the red armed stars?
It was only fitting to incorporate some racing flag strips
for one of the borders!!
With some red borders to fence in the flag strips
It was off to the races…I mean…longarmer!!
Terry Whitman of Meandering Star is my longarm quilter of choice.
She does an incredible job as always!!
Such attention to detail and amazing swirls and feathers!!
I used Susie’s Magic Binding technique to finish it.
Click below to see a great tutorial on this easy and striking way to bind!!
Can’t wait to hang a quilt on my clothesline again!!
Snow is hampering this process.
A winner was waved in!!!
This quilt finished at 60″ x 60″ and will keep some little race fan warm on a cool night!!

Thanks, Christa for another beautiful Scrap Squad project concluded. She wrote this post in March and it was still pretty snowy up in her part of Canada. Hopefully spring has gotten there by now.
Next week we’ll reveal the first Scrap Squad quilt from the new July/August issue. You won’t want to miss it!
