Barn quilts are quilt blocks that are typically painted on boards and mounted on barns. If you’ve been on a road trip recently, perhaps you’ve spotted some–they’re popping up all over the country!
Mark Fitzgerald of the Classic Metal Company has seen them too, and they were his inspiration for quilt blocks made from steel. You don’t need a barn to display these beauties. Maybe you admired his barn quilts in Quiltmaker’s November/December ’12 issue. We asked Mark to share a little more about his product:
How did you get started at Classic Metal Company?
An old friend of mine, Ted, invited me to take a tour of a machine shop he was managing. I watched in fascination as his computer-guided laser cutters cut large sheets of thick steel as if they were made of butter.
A short time later, I had a “divine spark of inspiration” to make barn quilts using this process. I had always admired both barn quilts and fabric quilts I had seen, but had no experience with quilting in my family. I made one prototype and showed it to Tami, a co-worker who is a quilter. She gave it her hearty approval and thought other quilters would like them too. After building an on-line store to showcase the barn quilts and attending several regional quilt shows, I was convinced that I should pursue creating barn quilts full time and quit my career of 27 years. It was a great decision–I couldn’t be happier being a part of the quilting community.
What inspired you to make your barn quilts?
After coming up with the initial idea, I thought about how barn quilts were becoming so popular across the country. Most people don’t have barns or don’t want to make a traditional painted wood block, so making it easy for everyone to enjoy the artistry of a barn quilt seemed like a good niche to fill. Having come from a commercial printing and graphic design field, I also enjoyed the beautiful designs I discovered as I started collecting books devoted to quilt block designs.
Can you tell us a little more about the manufacturing process?
First, I create a design for a quilt block in Adobe Illustrator. I have to think in reverse because the parts I draw are the parts that are cut out of the metal. What is left becomes the barn quilt. I then email the design to Ted’s machine shop and he converts my drawings into a language his computer uses to guide the laser-cutter. The barn quilts are cut from 4′ x 6′ sheets of heavy gauge steel.
The barn quilts are then taken to another facility for powder-coat painting. The metal squares are washed several times and then are hung on a conveyer that slowly takes them through a paint booth where they are coated with paint powder. The blocks move through a very hot oven where the paint powder melts and spreads–totally covering the barn quilts for a durable, outdoor finish.
Do you have plans for other block designs and sizes?
I plan to add new designs on a regular basis. Larger 3 and 4 foot sizes have been recently added. I don’t stock many of the larger sizes–at this time they are created as custom orders.
I am also adding napkin holders (or fat quarters) utilizing the barn quilt designs. Many other home decor items incorporating the barn quilt designs are in the design stage and I plan to start introducing them in 2013.
Is there anything else about your barn quilts that you’d like our readers to know?
I attend 6 to 8 regional quilt shows a year and invite quilters to stop by my booth. I really enjoy talking with quilters–they inspire me with their creativity and fun ideas. At a recent quilt show, I learned that one of my barn quilts now adorns an outhouse! My event schedule is listed on my website: classicmetalcompany.com.

These are so beautiful. I have a friend that does this type of metal work and I have a name design on my house. Now, I need a Quilt Block design to hang on the garage door!
What a great idea! I’ve wanted to put a barn quilt on the road side of the garage at our lake home. Every year I make a quilt for the Lake Association annual meeting as a door prize, and the folks all know me as ‘the quilt lady.’
These are so cool. I have a spot on the front of my garage that used to hold a basketball net. I think one of these would be much better. How about a Double Wedding Ring Design? Thanks for the chance to win!
They are so beautiful! What an artist! I’d love to see a block of Sister’s Choice. Thank you for the chance to win.

I have a perfect spot near my front door in our porch. I’ve wanted to hang something there for the longest time!
I’ve frequented Mark’s web page and just can’t decide which design I love the most! I have a 3 story field stone fireplace where a barn quilt design would look just wonderful!
How wonderful these are. I grew up in Pa and had a dear friend in Pa Dutch country. I always envied them such beautiful art. I know just a spot to hang one. First I thought in my sewing room. But that would hide it away from most visitors even though I could enjoy it. I would hang it in my living room to enjoy every day. Since I live in Southwest it would not go well with my roadrunners on the front of the house. Thank you for making such beautiful art. If I could afford to make purchases I would have them all and hang them in my living room to remind me of my friend of 40 years who is no longer with us.
I would hang it outside near my door….or maybe over the fireplace in our living room. Either place would be great.
These are just lovely. I was going to suggest a Carpenter’s star, but that’s essentially the same as the Dutch Rose, so how about an Ozark Star. That would look pretty in a silhouette. Thanks for the fantastic giveaway opportunity.
I would display it on my front porch, very similar to the one pictured in this post. I sometimes will hang a quilt there and get many compliments. Think this would be really wonderful to have. Thanks for a chance to win.
I want one for my front porch! They are awesome! Thanks for the chance to win!
Oh my gosh! I would *love* to win one of these. I would display it right at the front door.
I live in a 55+ community wherein almost all the homes look just alike. Many have used their hobbies as their signatures on the house to give a bit a variety. I would love to have one of these delicious barn hangings to use on the front of my garage door.
No one would wonder if this is the house the quilting lady lives in. Indeed, it is.
What a wonderful chance to win something so special.
I love these. Would it have to be outside? I’d never see it by my front door. Maybe the garage?
Oh wow! These are great! I would display mine in the front of my house.
Love love love!
I love the Americana Star on his website, as well as the Blazing Star.
I would love any star design he wants to do!
How about Cross and Crown? maple leaf. 54-40 or Fight. Providence? Weathervane. Rambler (wild geese in an x diagonally through the block).
I would hang mine, if I won, in my living room/kitchen where the vaulted ceiling meets, or above my stairs where a huge blank wall is waiting!
I just love these they are beautifully created lovely job Mark!! I would make a Cake Stand block and have it on point with 4patches on the boarder. Love love the look it would be a wonderful accessory to the top front of garage where it can be viewed from the street but high enough that it won`t be taken!!
Lovely lovely idea!!
I’d display mine on the front of my house between the living room and dining room windows. Thanks.
HI! THESE ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL! I MIGHT BE TEMPTED TO HANG IT ON THE BARN, BUT IF I WON ONE OF THESE, I’M SURE IT WOULD GO IN MY SEWING LOFT! THANKS FOR SHARING!
Wow Mark’s metal quilt blocks are beautiful. I would hang one on the outside of my quilting studio as it is a small 12′x16′ building and would look perfect on it!! I think I know what to ask for Christmas now
Absolutely love this. I have an empty area between my front kitchen windows. I used to hang a wreath in the winter, but could never find anything extraordinary for the rest of the year. (I want my house to look original.) This is it. Next stop, Mark’s website, so I can put it on my Christmas wish list.
Wow, what a generous giveaway. And they are beautiful. If I won one I would hang it on the house. We just moved, and it has a big area that would be perfect for one. The house it red and green, so the design would show up beautifully. Thanks for a chance.
I have seen these and think they are awesome. I would display it on the front of my house. Thanks for a chance to win one!
Storm at Sea would look awesome!! I slap one right up on the front of my house in my deck area. (ha, ha, my deck spans the whole front!). What a clever idea. Why didn’t I think of that?
Oh my!! This is amazing!!! I would love to display one of these on my house! What a super creative idea!!
I would Love to display this quilt outside at my back door.

Happy days.
Bev C
I love these! I would happily hang one right by my cottage door to let everyone know my favorite hobby! Thank you for the chance!
i have always told my husband that i was going to turn his barn/man cave into my quilting studio. So i think this would be the perfect sign to hang on the outside of the barn.
I have just the spot on the side of my garage where one of these would fit perfectly! Sisters Choice is one of my favorite blocks in honor of my three sisters.
I would love a “shoo fly” block in one of those! Thanks for the chance to get one!
I would definitely hang it outside my front door. Those are so pretty.
I would like to hang one on my porch or in my sewing room.
These are lovely. I would hang it on my garage over the door. My garage is out front and my house is behind so everyone could see it and hopefully know a quilter lives here!
I would hang it on the front porch so everyone would know a quilter lives here. As if they didnt already know….. or perhaps my hubby would let me hang it on the shed near the road, since the driveway is half a mile long.
Since I hope to be moving to a farm soon, I would display one on the side of a new barn!
Ooo, I’d love to have one of those and I’d put it on the eve of my house. I’m a rabid quilter, proud of it, and could share my love with others if I had one of those metal quilt blocks to display.
Beautiful! I would display a barn quilt on the side of the house where I have a little garden/sitting area. I can imagine spending some quality quiet time rocking and admiring the barn quilt.
Hey Mark!
The Barn Quilts are so beautiful! Looks like you put alot of time and effort in to them! I love the look of the metal works! We live in a country style home and any of your works would be right at home here! I think the Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam would be cute in the metal work, too.
I like flying geese. Could those be made into medal work? I could put in on the side of my house where my deck is.
I love the barn quilts. Would hang it right on the front of my house so everyone in the neighborhood could enjoy it along with me.
It’s time to retire our unused basketball hoop from the garage and give it a quilty upgrade! Thanks for the chance.
I’ve seen barn quilts but never metal quilts. I would love to hang one over my garage door. Thanks for the chance to win one!
These are great! I’d love to put one on my porch right by my front door.
What a great idea to make them from metal! I would hang one above my garage door.
I would love to win one of these beauties! I would hang it on the shed in my yard, right where I could see it from the kitchen window. I’m working on a card trick quilt now, wonder how that block would work in metal?
I would love to display one of these on my garage, just above the door. Would be so nice there! Or, I have a blank space on my wall at work that I could hang one….Hmmm….decisions…
I love star blocks, so would love to see a friendship star or New York Beauty in a barn block.
Thanks!
These quilt blocks are fantastic. I have the perfect spot for one on the side of our garage.
Since we recently moved, I would put it beside my front door. They are just beautiful!
I would put it up on my gable which just happens to be my sewing room!!!
I love these. I met Mark at the Des Moines AQS show, and bought a small Mariner’s compass to hang above my husband’s train sign by our house numbers. I would love to win a larger one to put up in the front of the garage.
I would be so excited to win this. I have a “Southern front porch” with a swing. I would hang a quilt lock there.
I have cathedral ceilings making my walls very tall. I think I could find a wall that a barn quilt would look very nice on since I don’t have a barn. I am a city girl.
Those are gorgeous…I have NO idea where I would put one, but I’d certainly find a space if I won one!
Wonderful pieces! I would put mine on the side of my lake home near the window of my sewing room (aka the guest bedroom). Thanks for the chance at a wonderful giveaway.
We have a barn, but it’s back in the field. If we win, think we should hang our barn quilt above the garage door where will be real obvious. Or, finally my mother will let me hang something on the wall behind the dining table as we are both quilters. That is a prominent spot too. Both are proper locations to display this lovely metal quilt.
Oh I love these! My two favorite things -quilts and metal work! I would probably put this on my new front porch next to my new front door!
I love the Ohio Star in Black. It would look great on my screened in back porch. Thanks for the giveaway.
I loved these the first time I saw them. I have wanted to paint our garage door with a quilt block, but my DH said NO!. When I showed him these he said it would be perfect on the front of the house. They are just striking. Thank you for the chance to win one.
I would place the quilt block right outside my quilt room door. It has a set of French doors that leads to the outside. Oh how very, very special! Everyone would know a quilter lives here!
I would display the quilt block over my garage door — just in case any of the neighbors do not know I am a quilter.
Oh, they are stunning! I would put it on my front porch..i have the perfect spot! Thank you for a lovely giveaway.
I would love to display one of the squares in my Mom’s room in a skilled nursing facility. She shared her loving of quilting with me, and now that I’ve truly been ‘converted’ into a quilter (after her years long efforts) I’d like to gift her back with a lasting symbol of the wonderful creativity she opened up to me.
I have a wall between my kitchen and my family room that one of these would look perfect on. They are so beautiful.
Fantastic! I would hang one near my back door so my “back door” friends can see it when they come to visit! I have the perfect spot in mind! Thanks for the opportunity to win!
I have light concrete walls all around my patio and one of these blocks would really look nice out there!
Beautiful! I would probably hang it over the fireplace.
Oh those are neat! I’d put it on the back of my house, where I have a nice little patio going on that I do my sewing on in the summer! Thank you for the giveaway.

I love these metal quilts. If I had one I would put it on the side of my barn shaped storage unit where it can be seen from two streets. A block that I think should be added to the collection is Noonday.
I would display a barn quilt on my porch. Thank you for a chance to win. Janita
Absolutely gorgeous! I would try to display a barn quilt above our garage door – pending hubby’s approval! I think Churn Dash would be a striking design. Thanks for the chance to win!
Wow! Amazing art. How about a Dresden Plate block?
If I won one, I would probably pass it on to my daughter who has a more farmhouse-y house with more non-windowed walls. Though if I kept it, it could go IN a window.
I recently had a deck built and had the builder add an Ohio Star to the floor by the door. Wouldn’t it be great to hang on on my house?
These barn blocks are so beautiful. I love to put it at my garage door. I love to see traditional blocks such as churn dash or pin wheel
We’re going to be rebuilding our garage shortly after the Christchurch earthquakes destroyed the original one, the new building will include a studio for me and I’d put it on the wall of that part of the building.
I would definitely put one of these on the front porch of the brand new home we are building in central Washington.
These are really nice! I would put one on the side of our shop – highly visible from the street! LOL!
These are beautiful. I think a block would make a nice decorating item in my garden.
I would love to win one of these. I have several places on my house where one could be used depending on the size. It will absolutely have a place of honor – now the decision – let the neighborhood enjoy it or hang it in a more private outdoor space where I frequent? Decisions, decisions – I’ll accept this hardship with graciousness and gratitude should I be lucky enough to win. Now, off to check out the website and their schedule – hopefully they will be coming to an area near me.
What beautiful quilt designs!!! There is a spot above our front door that would be perfect to display one of them. Our son was learning how to do the metal art until he had a stroke 2 years ago. Now we’re hoping someday he’ll be able to continue. This might give him inspiration!! Continue the good work.
I love these quilts! Not sure where I’d put one, though it would probably end up in the house so I could see it often. Thanks for another great chance to win.
I would love to hang one of these by my front door–they are beautiful! I think a Celtic knot would look great made up into a metal quilt block.
These are cool. I especially like the mariner’s compass. I have a spot on the side of my house that would be perfect.
I love this. Thanks for sharing this information.
Oh, my. I live in Utah, the land of quilting. I would hang one on the front of my house and be the envy of the neighborhood. What beautiful work!
I would display my barn quilt right next to my front door. I have a space that has a large star right now but the star is kind of boring. I would suggest a volume 6 block that is on the cover, I don’t know the name but have been noticing it, it is the fourth row down and the 3rd over, it’ s very intricate. Thanks. Vivian
I love these. I would like to see a log cabin block. I leave in a log cabin. I would put it on my house.
These are absolutely fabulous! We have a couple of barn quilt trails in our state. They are wonderful to tour, but I have not seen these beauties. I would love to have one for my house. Mark has done my three favorite blocks. I’m not sure how he would do it, but one using a series of flying geese would be really cool. Thank you for the great giveaway. Tamsyn
I love these barn quilt blocks and have just the right spot for one.
I know these are designed for outside….but I have a wall in my hallway that is 2 stories high and is just begging for something BIG but not overwhelming…..I think one of these would be perfect! Thank you for the chance to win one! (The hallway can be seen from the kitchen, dining room and living room, and the empty spot is just over the bathroom door, so it’s not like it would be hidden)….
I’m in the UK and we don’t have barn quilts! I’ve never seen one in real life but I’d love one on the end wall of my barn!!
I have a large old house with a peak just calling out for a “barn quilt”. A reward for those who remember to look up!
I would put one on the front of my house next to the front door so I could see it every time I came home. I think I would have to also put one on the side of our big shed in the back yard so i could see if every time I looked out the back window. They are just beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful! Something that I can relate to as a quilter, it has meaning and is tangible in my world.
These are beautiful and I would hang them on my fireplace mantel
Beautiful! I would love to hang any one of those quilts next to my front door. Quilter living here! Or I’d hang it on my privacy fence in the backyard, so I could see it every time I used the kitchen sink. Decisions, decisions! Thanks for the chance to win!
These barn quilts are beautiful! Living in the country, a barn quilt would fit in just perfectly on the side of our house or garage.
Thanks for the clear explanation of the process. I really like the metal blocks better than the painted ones — think they would hold up to weather much better. We have both a cottage and a home and I would love to have one to hang on either one.
I would love to have a barn quilt to display in our school library to go along with some storybooks on quilting. My favorite design is the Mariner’s Compass.
Simply stunning!
I’d love to see a Flying Geese (Goose Chase) and a Ocean Waves (Storm at Sea) blocks.
I have a ‘thing’ for geese, and I’m a Navy Mom (Mariner’s compass is nice, but the Sea is where the heart is).
Thanks for the chance to win.
I plan to get one of these for my sister for her birthday. Not sure yet which design, bu she has the perfect place to display one of these. They live in the country and her garden room ‘needs’ one. And if I buy her one, I will have to get one for me. I go with the one for you, one for me type of buying when I can.
These are beautiful! I have been trying to choose designs for 2 small barn quilts to go on my new shed doors. I also returned from Kentucky yesterday where we saw barn quilts all over the state. They were amazing. I would place one of these “barn” quilts next to my front door.
These are beautiful, I have wanted one ever since I seen them advertised in a magazine. I would hang one near by backdoor to greet all our hunting guests that come and stay at our place. Looking foreward to seeing the napkin holder.
Carol L
I really like the “clean” look of these metal barn quilt blocks. And I think that traditional quilt blocks, rather than modern ones, would look best in this two-color medium. How about Jacob’s Ladder? He could put four smaller motifs together to make a balanced block.
Beautiful!!! A year ago we moved out in the country to a farm. I would love to have a metal block hanging on the barn! I´ve always loved Jacob´s Ladder, so that´s a traditional block I´ll suggest
Gun, Sweden
I love barn quilts. I would place it on our barn.
These are so cool! I would hang one in my quilt studio where I can admire it each and every day!
I saw these at a quilt show recently. I have two places I might hang one if I won. One would be on my porch near my front door or I have peak on my house where a block would look nice. thanks for a chance to win one.
I would display it by my front door, or by my patio. I think Jacob’s Ladder would be a nice addition.
I would hang it next to my front door. These are beautiful. Thanks for the chance to win!
I would hang one of these on my garage. My mother (who lives with me) and I are both quilters and have talked of painting a quilt square on the garage for years but have never done it. This would give us what we want without the effort. Thanks for the chance to win one!
These would look great inside or outside.
If I were lucky enough to win, I’d put the barn quilt on my deck outside my office window!
OMG!! These are fabulous!! I would ahve it in my 2 story entryway/foyer. love it!!
They are wonderful. I would love to put one on a wall that surrounds my garden.
These are so beautiful! I think above the fireplace. It doesnt have to be outside does it? ; )
I would love to see a Grandmother’s Flower Garden barn quilt and I would display it in my bay window with lights shining on it.
Wow! What an awesome give-a-way!!!!! I would proudly display this beautiful piece at the front of my quilt studio (The Creaky Knee Quilt Studio) and it would invite in my friends and fellow quilters. What a wonderful addition that would be…..
These are really cool! I would love to have several of them lined up on my wooden fence so that I could see them every day from my sewing room and Family room.
Ohio star 8 pointed star , sunbonnet sue, nine patch. And it d go right beside the door for all to see and admire.
I’d place it in my sewing room above my machine, next to the cross-stitch my sister made for me that states “a needle in the hand is worth two in the couch.” Mark’s strongly designed art would be a constant reminder to find the depth and beauty in my own work.
I saw these designs at Madison quilt expo. I have the perfect spot over my garage doors underneath the window.
Oh, I love the barn quilts. Thanks for the chance to win one.
I would really like a Quilt Block to hang on my house. I have a perfect spot on my garage.
This definitley would spark up my front porch. I think a double wedding ring is a popular pattern and would be a popular item.
I have a quilt buddy who NEEDS that Bear Paw one to hang on her Studio! I would want a FAN or Dresden plate. I would hang it by my front door, to show everyone I’m a Quilter, as if they don’t already KNOW. Thanks to QM, and being a Tester for VOL 5 and 6. Love seeing my quilt in there!
I would display something this beautiful on my house letting everyone know there is a quilter here. Maybe even one in my sewing room about my cutting table for inspiration.
I would place outside, by my pottery studio/kennel door, or inside on my livingroom wall.
Garrett County, in western MD, has created its own Quilt Barn Trail, with a dozen or rustic barns displaying painted blocks and a published guide to aid natives and tourists interested in exploring this beautiful rural, mountainous area; it also has begun its own autumn quilt show/festival. We own a vacation home in that area, and I am an avid quilter. I have often wondered how I could display my support for the Tail effort, as will as highlight my own passion, to friends and passers-by. Being chosen to receive one of these marvelous metal blocks, to display on the side of our home, would be AWESOME!!!
I love the metal barn quilt. I am sure I could find someplace to hang it, probably in the fenced backyard, as I wouldn’t want anyone to take it.
I would love to display the metal barn quilt on my front porch! Thanks for the opportunity to enter your wonderful giveaway.
A three foot square would fit perfectly between my bedroom windows on the front of my house, then no one would be able to miss us because my house numbers are behind a tree!
Love these barn quilts & I would hand one either by my back door or over the garage door.
Those are beautiful! Last year, I finally took the plunge and bought a house with a little garden shed I’m converting into my “quilting shack”. A barn quilt would be the perfect touch!
LOVE your metal barn quilts. Would also LOVE to have one……:)
Wow, beautiful and a very inspiring story. I would display it proudly on my front door for anyone to enjoy.
I would display it on the little barn shed of the new house we are buying. It has a beautiful backyard and patio. A barn quilt would help make this “my” home! I am from a Kansas farming community but now live in Iowa. I went to Mark’s booth at the AQS show in Des Moines and saw these metal barn quilts for the first time. Our present home has vinyl siding and I didn’t know how we could hang anything on it. It won’t be a problem at the next house.
I’ve been looking for the perfect piece of art to display on my fireplace wall. Since I’m a quilter, I would love to have a quilt square to place there. Thanks for the opportunity. Love ‘em.
The metalworks art is beautiful and very popular.
Thank you, Mark and Quiltmaker!
I have one by my front door and it looks great. One on my garage would complement it perfectly. I would love to see the Missouri Star added to the line up.
I could have at least 3 of them! They are very, very nice for this long time quilter! One could go on the porch, one on the house by the main entrance, and one in my newly designed sewing room. My preference is the traditional designs of Ohio star, bear paw, square in a square, and log cabin.
Love them, saw them at show earlier this year, would be really neat to win one.
I would love to have one to hang on end of house that you see when coming down street. I’m the last house on dead end road but house sets square with other houses on street so no one sees front of house unless they come up driveway. Have been thinking about painting 2′x2′ piece of plywood as Seven sisters quilt block to hang there.
I have the ideal spot to display one of these barn block decorations. We have a long drive leading from the road down to our garage & house. The end of the garage can be seen perfectly as you drive in & it already has hooks there where someone had something else hanging at one time! It would look awesome!! I think it would be fun to see a pinwheel block as well!
I live in a 55+ community and we have several quilters in the neighborhood. I would love one of these to put on my front wall by the garage for all to see!!!
Love the Mariners Compass. I have a beautiful garden bench that would lovely together. The bench is a peachy color with a butterfly back. I have seen these metalworks art around. Thanks for the opportunity to win one of these!
I have quilts hanging all through my house so one of these would fit right in! I would probably hang it above my fireplace. These are so beautiful & I would love to have one.
I have been wanting one of hese for my house and my garage ! Love them !
I would hang on The outbuilding so I could see it every day. They are beautiful.
Love these! Since retiring my husband and I have traveled quite a bit and we’ve been bringing home things that we call fence art to decorate our yard – memories of our travels and things we like. I think a quilt block is perfect because I’ve been a quilter for almost 40 years.
I have seen these metal barn quilts at two shows I have attended and they are great. I was not able to purchase one at either show, but I have a gardening shed and one of these would look spectacular on the side of it.
I would love all of these they are all unquie and I love every one of them. I have the perfect spot for anyone I would get. I already have serval things made out of the metal. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!
These are beautiful!!!! As to where I would put one……well, by the back door since that is where we come in through. But right above my sewing table would be another good spot. Hummmm, just might have to think about 2 of them.
I would place the design over my front room window so that everyone approaching the house could see it. I found one I liked and placed it over the garage door and everyone says it is perfect. I am always looking for something unique.
Id put it on the front of the house so everybody passing by would know a quilter lives here. Neat items!
I have long admired the barn quilts in the North Carolina mountains where we have a weekend home. We are going to build on to the house and move there permanently some day, and I would love to have one of Mark’s barns displayed on it!
I love these, what a great idea! Love to have one of these on my front porch by my swing! Maybe bring it in sometimes to be able to enjoy more
Beautiful!
I have wanted to put up a barn quilt on the outside of my house for a long time.
I am a long arm quilter and have customers who bring their quilts right to my home. It definitely would make finding my house much easier since most of the homes on my street look alike! I would suggest a barn quilt with a Feathered Star block as my favorite.
A spot over my garage door, next to the road, would be a perfect place to show off these great pieces of work and show that we love quilting. I would like to see a Churn Dash pattern sometime. It is an old pattern and everyone recognizes it.
They are great ,I sit on my porch almost every day doing my paper pieces hexagons so if there is a Grandmothers Garden it would be just delightful XXX
I would love to have a large barn quilt for my garage. It would be displayed facing the street, so everyone driving by could see it.
My DH and I are going to be moving back to IL and looking for a new home soon and I would love to have one of the beauty metal barn quilt blocks to adorn our new home.
My new neighbors will know I am a quilter.
The quilt blocks are fantastic. I would hang two on either side of the front door.

That way, I would see it daily!
A few years back, I stepped out my back porch to go to work, heard this beautiful sound, looked up at the sky. One of these would be so awesome displayed on the front of my house. I know that a few neighbors know I quilt, but I want others to know it too. In the past I had hung some wall hanging size quilts in the bay window, but the sun started fading them, so I no longer display them. This type of quilt block, no matter the design, would let it be known far and wide…”a quilter lives here.”

These are just beautiful! What a talent! I would love to give one to my sister. She and her husband bought a second home down in Uma Arizona, her husband had just retired and he had been sick off and on for a few years. He was able to breath better in Arizonas climate. They planed on spending time there when ever they could get away. About 6 months after purchasing the home she lost her husband to chrones disease. He has been gone a year now, she did keep the home after contemplating whether or not to keep it. There is a shed right next to the house, a double wedding ring design would be perfect hanging in the front of the shed, it’s beauty would not go unappreciated.

One of my favorite quilt squares is the basket square so if I could have one of those that would be great! Either way I would hang it by my front door.
Working in the building which also houses our State Dept of Agriculture, I get to enjoy the Barn Quilt displayed on the side of the building. One cannot help but smile while passing it each day. And as a new quilter I would love to have one of this displayed on the front of my house. The Mariners Compass pattern is one of my favorites although I have not yet worked up the nerve to try it, being born and raised in Cincinnati I would love to have the Phio Star to display both my love of quilting and my home state pride.
I have a house with a 3 door garage. This leaves a huge empty space above those doors as the roof comes to a tall point up above. I have long wanted something to hang there, it has to be big! I thought of a big country 5 point star, then my neighbors hung one. Then I thought of a barn quilt & saw theses! Can’t afford one right now, but I have the perfect place to hang one! Please pick me! I’ve wanted one since they first came out!! Please?!?!
As we were designing our house, my husband and the realtor said, ” lets do an architectural detail on the front of the house to break up the line a little”. To me it’s just begging for something to go in the middle and a Barn Quilt would be just the thing.

Mark’s Barn Quilts are Spectacular !!! and I have a BARN to put it on. Two red barns in fact plus a small one for the chickens and Big Garage that I have been dying to put an Amish hex design on but this would be so much better. Mark is a Genuis, those are soooooo pretty. The Ohio Star Block is my all time favorite and he did such a wonderful job making these. I hope he comes to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival – scarlette shobbs@scarlette.com
My husband built a small shed, that looks like a barn. I would love to hang one of your creation’s on our barn shed.
I’m thinking I would put one either on the west side of the garage [facing the house] or the west side of the barn, on the door to the hayloft or above [also facing the house]… but that’s because I would enjoy looking at it every day. If we wanted to share it with the world we might consider other sides of buildings.
Liking the mariners compass, a lot!
They are beautiful. Since I live in rural Alaska and the weather is very harsh here, I probably would hang it inside my living room. His metal work is absolutely amazing. Talk of quilting with a different medium!
I would love the Bear Paw quilt block to place over my two doors of my oversized garage. It would make a great statement of my favorite hobby/love. All of them are so beautiful.

I would love to win one of these. I am a quilter, and I have the perfect place to hang one where it would be in a place of prominence on the front of my house.
I would like to say how wonderful your barn quilts are. I share my ‘obsession’ freely, and would love to share yours with my friends and family. I would put any one of your designs right at the front door for all the world to see ! And of course confirm that ALL are welcome
Saw several “barn quilts” while vacationing and told my husband..”I gotta have one of those”. He even said I could put on our barn/shop which is pretty much his domain. Your barn quilts look beautiful and I would love to have one.
I have a white house, so this quilt block would be an awesome display beside my front door. I especially like the Mariners Compass, but all of them are beautiful.

I would LOVE to win one of these quilt blocks! I’d hang it over out bistro set on our deck. I’d be able to see it from inside the dinning room/kitchen area of our home. I’d enjoy it on those summer evenings when we dine outside. AND, the street traffic would be able to enjoy it as they pass by.

Any quilt design would look great on my carport wall so I could think about quilting as I was going to work and coming home from work!
The metal quilts are awesome and I have the perfect place to hang any one of them, especially the three foot quilts. I live in a house that is 107 years old and next summer I was going to paint one on the outside of the house, but if I won one it would be perfect.
I have wanted to paint a “barn quilt” on the wall at the end of my garage. It would be visible to anyone turning onto our street and I would pass by it every day.
I would put it inside. Would be great to see them add 4 rings of a “Double Wedding Ring”. Was happy to see that they do custom orders.
Love them, would go on the front of my shed or the peak of my house, would really show up against the lite grey.
Oh my goodness. This would be so much easier than making one out of plywood and then painting nice neat lines which is what I put on my husband’s honey-do list to do this winter so we could hang it on our house gable next spring. I even have my desigh picked out…Night & Day although the Mariner’s compass would look wonderful, too. I agree, why just limit these neat things to barns when we quilter’s live in houses. :- ) Fingers crossed that I might be one of the winners.
love, love, love the mariners star….I paper pieced a wall hanging of it last year. Our families live miles apart, so it brings to mind all the directions that we travel for visits to those grandbabies! Beautiful work of art. I’d hang mine on our front porch.
I really liked these when I saw them in the magazine but didn’t take the time to look up their web site. Thanks for the reminder! If I had one of these I think I’d hang it on the end wall of the family room.

These barn quilts are beautiful. I would love to win one as my mother-in-law has recently added a sun room on the back of her house. One of these would look wonderful on her fence so she could view it while sitting in her sun room.
I just love this! If I had one I would display it on the side of my home to proudly announce to everyone that a quilter resides here! So unique!!
Beautiful work! I would hang one of these blocks in my kitchen window so I could see it every time I wash dishes, my window over my front door or in the window of my sewing room. Any of these places would allow me to share my love of quilting with anyone who drives by my house, yet allow me to enjoy it daily, too. Other possible designs I would suggest would be Cathedral Window or Grandmother’s Flower Garden.
I have been thinking of getting one of these to put in a square window above my front door. I just can’t decide which one. Some suggestions: Snow Crystals Block, Goose in the Pond Block, Radiant Feathered Star Block. Thank you for the opportunity to win.

Hello,
What a wonderful contest you are having! If I was one of the lucky ones pick for this I would ask for the Ohio Star block or Monkey Wrench. The reason for this is b/c both are the first blocks I ever made and got hook making quilts. My son just moved from home and I now have a sewing room for the first time so I would hang it in my new sewing room! Thank you please have a good Thanksgiving…Sandy
These are really awesome, Will have to think about this!!
Oh how wonderful these are. Thank you for making and sharing them. I would display your quilt square on the side of my new sewing room my husband built for me.
I saw these blocks in a couple quilt magazine last month and immediately emailed my kids my Christmas list with one of these (any one as all are so very lovely) at the top of the list. I recently retired and set up a second home near my daughter’s family in North Carolina. The facade of the house is very plain and close to the street. I would put my first quilt block (my intention is to own several) next to the front door to welcome the my new friends and neighbors and to cheer me as I come and go.
I had the honor of meeting Mark at the AQS show in Grand Rapids in August, and purchased one of his large Mariner’s Compass blocks to put on the side of my house. I would love to have another one to put on my barn as well! Hmmm, and maybe one for my garage, too?!?!
I so enjoyed your display at the AQS show in Des Moines. These quilt blocks are gorgeous. We have a new patio between our house & garage. I believe one of these blocks would look great hanging on the garage, so everyone could see it, as they relaxed on the patio.
I would display it above my stairs in my hallway!
I absolutely love the metal quilt designs. It is a difficult decision which is my favoriate, but I vote for the mariner’s compass. They are almost too beautiful to hang outside; if I was fortunate enough to have one I would hang it above my fireplace mantel. How talented Mr. Fitzgerald is!
I’ll put it on the back fence where I can see it whenever look out the door.
As soon as I saw these in a magazine, I told “Santa” they were on my wish list for the holidays.I’d LOVE to own one and would put it right near my front door for everyone to see that a quilter lives in this house. My exterior is siding so it would look FABULOUS!
Great giveaway!!
I would love to have one of his barn quilts to put on my [grey] house. I became interested in barn quilts several years ago when I was selected to be the first barn quilt block design winner at Accuquilt.
thanks!
I know I could find the perfect place to hang one on my front porch for all to enjoy. But, then I would need to get another to put on the garage. They are wonderful!
Awesome! Almost makes you want to build a barn to put them on!!!
These are great! My dad always had an old barn. He had a stroke and in nursing home now. I’d love to have a barn quilt to hang at the nursing home for all the patients to enjoy.
These are amazing works of art. I would love to win one to hang beside my front door. Thank you for the chance to win.
I would love to be the first in our community to have a metal quilt block on the front of my home to welcome all visitors. What a wonderful way to declare my love of quilts to others.
Beautiful! I would put one near my front door for everyone to enjoy.
Just love these! And would love one for my dining room with its 15 foot ceiling… lots of wall space for that large Mariner’s Compass.
I love Dutch Rose and Sister’s Choice. Right on my front door!
Love these!! They would look great on the beige brick on the front of our home, but I might be selfish and hang it in our diningroom so I could admire it constantly. This goes to the top of my wishlist!
I love your versions of barn quilts!!! If I had one I’d hang it on my front door, over the large glass window…That way I could enjoy it coming and going and while at home every day. It would let the light shine in and create wonderful shadows of the quilt design on my floors as the sun set and let the light shine out at night, sharing the design with the world!
I love all of these. I’ve been wanting to put a barn quilt on the back side of my garage that faces the highway. Thanks for the chance to win.
I love these metal pieces of quilts. I have a friend that made a compas quilt and would love to give her that block. Thanks for offering to give one to a quilter.
I love these. We have a painted barn quilt on our barn and we are part of a barn quilt tour biannually.
I would love to have one of these to hang on our porch by the door where all enter! Our farmhouse has been in my family for 4 generations! \

I would love love to win one of these. I have the perfeft place for one on my pole barn. I would be the envy of all around!
Sue
I would love one for my barn!!
I love the idea of having a barn quilt without the barn. Someday I hope to retire to the country and have a barn but until then I would love to have a metal quilt to hang in my covered outdoor fireplace area. Quilts are such comforts-making, piecing, giving, cuddling, sharing, displaying, and well, it would be awesome to add winning to the list.
Your quilts are awesome.
These are so cool! I would put it on my inclosed porch. I would love to see one made with the basket block.
I would hang one on the porch of our log home in Pray, Montana. It would look beautiful against the warm wood logs and compliment the amazing view of Paradise Valley and the surrounding mountains.
I have no idea where I would hang a barn quilt as we are selling our current house to move back to Texas. It might just migrate from room to room and exterior wall to exterior wall until it finds its home. How about a fireplace screen? Is the process limited to straight lines? My Mother loved Sunbonnet Sue’s. That one would live in my sewing room.
I love everyone of these designs! If I won one I would hang it on my husband’s storage building that looks like a barn! That would be so cool!!!
Really classic in appearance. I would hang this in my studio/ tv room so I could enjoy it everyday. I would love an Ohio Star. I am a buckeye at heart.
I don’t have a barn but the end of my house is available and perfect for one of these. While with my friend last year, she ordered a couple of these for her log cabin workshop we’ve been updating for our quilting studio. Can’t wait to hang them on our first official sewing day. As for me, the end of my house faces a major highway – a perfect place to hang a piece of art.
I love seeing barn quilts and someday hope to have one painted for my very large 1880′s barn. But, for now, my time and money is going towards restoring the barn. If I won one of these, I could enjoy it hanging on the barn right away!
Love it!

When I saw this on FB I did not recognize the block and just thought hey that’s really beautiful. When I went to this blog to read the article and saw the name Mariner’s Compass I knew I had to respond here. I am opening a new quilt/fabric shop in North Dakota. The name is Sew On & Sew North….i have considered using a compass as part of my logo. So this would be beautiful displayed as part of my sign on my store. It would be representative of the Sew North portion of the name and would be a compass guiding me on my new exciting adventure!!!!

I would hang the barn quilt on a post at the entrance to my driveway or have it on the front top of the machine shed or grain bin for all to see.
So beautiful. What a great decoration.
I would put a barn quilt on the end of our barn facing the road in our little Southern rural community. Then everyone who passes our place would be able to see and enjoy it. And, then, I would put another on on the opposite end of the barn, and then one on the front, and one on the back of the barn, and then I would just keep on adding barn quilts until I ran out of room. please, I would love to win one. I have a small barn shed that I would put it on.
love to win. i’ll put it on my back porch.
I love the black metal – Wow! How they would show up on or in a house! I think if I had a small one I would hang it on the oak wall above the slate fireplace; if it were larger, It would go outside to the side of the large window in the living room. I have the perfect place where everyone could see it. No trees around it, just deep red barberry bushes to show it off.
Great website! My favourite is the LeMoyne star, I would be torn between placing it on the garage wall where I would enjoy seeing it every day from my kitchen window or on an interior wall in the kitchen. Thanks.
These are just beautiful! I would love to see one of them in my sewing room and another can go on the deck. Oooh, the possibilities!!!
I would hang a metalworks piece where I could see it everyday!
Thank you , Mark, and Quiltmaker!
These are wonderful! I would hang it inside where I could see it everyday.
They are beautiful! I would love to have one for my home. There are so many great quilt block designs. I think there’s one called Honey Bee I really liked.
Do I like just one? No. They’re all sooooo beautiful! Striking in fact!!
These are great. I would hang one next to my back door.
I would love to hang one either on the front of my house, or on the side where I have more room and it faces a busy street. It’s kind of like hanging a sign that says “A quilter lives here.”
I love the metalworks. The rusty metal is great, too. Would hang it on my porch.
Sew Cool!!
I would hang mine on my Garden Shed, to remind others that gardening is not my only passion. I love all the designs, who wouldn’t?
Thank you for showing them to us.
Hang one in the entry way. Beautiful art work.
I would hang it on my garage door, sew every car that goes by could see it !!
I would display it above my sewing area. Perfect place. Thanks for the chance to win. I love the barn quilts
These metal work pieces would look great just about anywhere in our home. I’d love to see a piece made from the Sunbonnet Sue quilt design.
Would love to have one. Thanks
I was going to start a wooden one as a project over the winter. I didn’t realize they were available in metal! What a great idea. I have the perfect place to hang one!
I have the perfect spot for one of these. So cool!!
I love them I would hang on side where everyone could see
I am a longarm quilter and would not only like, but LOVE one of these to hang on our new house! We move in the middle of January and this would tell our neighborhood that a Quilter Lives Here!
We have a cabin in the mountains……I have wanted one for a long time…..Please pick me!!!! lol
One of these would look so nice on the front door of our barn at the racetrack.I like to decorate our barn during “Grand Circuit” week because we have new people coming to the races.Next year I want to paint different quilt blocks on wood and put them under the windows of each horse.
I just love these, they are beautiful.
I’ve been wanting one to hang on the front peak of my car port. It looks so bare and needs something beautiful to accent.
This is form of art and I love to display any form of art. I love creative people and their work. Would love to win one to show off the talent.
I would hang one of these on the peak of our garage or on the house by the back door. Love them & can’t wait to get one.
I would display it on the front of my house.
They are BEAUTIFUL! I would hang it on the front of my garage if not in my living room.
How cool are these!! I dont have a barn or fence but I could display it proudly by my front door!! I think a Feathered Star would look great, especially with lights behind it. That Mariners Compass is pretty amazing. Id say you had a great idea an will have lots of fun with it! Good Luck everyone!
Saw these in your magazine and loved them! Would love to hang one on the back yard “barn”.
Beautiful and love the idea. I’d hang it by my front door.
This is such an awesome idea – my husband is a sheet metal worker of 26 years and has made me some beautiful things, but NEVER anything like these! I would LOVE to win! I would proudly display my winning “quilt” on the side of the house, just so husband could see it everyday when he comes down the driveway, home from work! ha ha ha. Just kidding, husband would love this, too. We quilt as a team – he helps with the color selection and cuts all my strips/pieces and I sew them together while he “ooh’s and ahh’s” over them.
God bless you all and Happy Quilting!
WoW !! Beautiful!! I would hang one on the front side of my house, between the garage windows. The black iron would look gorgeous on the weathered green of my house.
Got just the spot
I already own one of them and love it on our house. We have a cabin up north that I would love to put on one also. They are so durable and add quilting character where ever you put them. Lots of people comment on my mariner compass quilt block already. I would be so excited to win one and display it in the northwoods.
Beautiful!! Have a perfect wall to hang something like this on….
Beautiful! I would probably hang one in my living room for all to see as they enter.
I have a huge stone fireplace that would look great with one of these hanging on it. I also have a barn that could use one, but if it was inside friends and family could admire it better. They are really beautiful, such a talented guy to think of this idea. Thanks for the chance to win one.
What a wonderful giveaway! I would love to use this in the window of my front door instead of a generic grill.
These are SOOO cool. I’d put it near my front door!
What a wonderful idea. I would build a barn of course if I won. lol
I currently live in a 32′ rv 5th wheel and still do my quilt making in it while my husband works on location. A smaller light weight one for the door or side of the RV would be wonderful or even to hang at the end of the canopy. I also see one used as a picnic table centerpiece Keep up the good work and new ideas. “Sew2Day4Fun”

barn quilt would be great mounted above my couch.
What a beautiful product to sell to us quilters! There are so many places I can think to hang something this pretty. We have a beach house that would benefit from your art – I have to admit, I have been looking for just the right thing to put there. It would have to withstand beach life and that has always made it more difficult to choose materials. On the other hand, I have a beautiful fence in my backyard that I look at (complete with squirrels that play in my backyard) that would provide me with a perfect place for one of these. It would not be seen so much by the public, but would be enjoyed by my family and friends (especially my quilting friends that come over to sew and use the longarm). Needless to say, I WOULD LOVE TO WIN ONE OF THESE.
Love the barn quilt!! Would be perfect for my front porch.
Beautiful work..so much talent involved when it comes to making things like this. Our local FFA group began painting ‘barn quilts’ and hanging them on our local farmer’s barns. This has become epidemic here in Iowa. Your designs are awesome and would look great anywhere! I own an older 2-story building in my small rural town. Built in 1890. Just having a vision of what these style barn quilts would like like mounted on the upper windows at 25 foot with some special lighting! Keep up the great work you do! I love seeing these!
The Barn Quilts are amazing, and your work is amazing. We have a 20ft Moss Rock wall with Fireplace and Mantle, a Grouping of these would look Awesome. I come from a quilting family, my mom, mother-in-law, aunts, and even one of my uncles. It would be a blessing to win one of your Barn Quilts!
the blocks are awesome! so simple looking in their basic outline design. nice to see this as a growing movement.
Good timing! I am in need of a barn quilt to hang next to my front door. The Home Sweet Home heart that hung there has disappeared after 14 years. I guess it was due to be replaced.
Having made several Easy Elegant Lone Star quilts and planning to make many more, it would be wonderful the have Lone star block made by you for the wall outside my studio. Your idea was fantastic-kudos for running with it!
I looked at these at a fair I still remember them – They are great looking and would love to have one on the barn or the log cabin where alot of quilters spend time
One of these would look really nice on the front of my house. Thanks for the chance to win one.
I would love one. Very neat.
These metal quilt squares are absolutely beautiful. I have the perfect spot for one — right by my front door. Quilting is my new passion, and this type of art would be a special addition to my front porch!
I have just the spot for one of these little beauties on the front of my house near the door. My neighbors see me coming and going with my sewing machine all the time and always ask to see what I’m making. It would be a perfect statement for my little blue house!
I would place the beautiful barn quilt on the side of my house that you see coming up my long driveway.
I am so excited to be a winner! Thank you so much for the awesome gift and all the inspiration!
