100 Blocks Volume 6: Disappearing Act

Hello! I hope you enjoyed the blog tour last week and got to visit with some of our wonderful designers. This week the staff here at Quiltmaker will share thoughts about our blocks, so be sure to check back each day. And, there will be more giveaways!! More about that later.

My block, Disappearing Act, came about as I played with shapes on graph paper. That’s usually how I design blocks, and sometimes quilts. The nice thing about graph paper is that it’s portable. Someone gave me a little pad of quilter’s graph paper that I keep in my purse—it’s easy to pull out when inspiration strikes. You never know where you’ll be when you see something that reminds you of a quilt block or design!

Let’s look at my block:

QMMS 120024 BEAM 100 Blocks Volume 6: Disappearing ActDisappearing Act

I used fabrics from a collection called Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Soho solids, all from Timeless Treasures. There are lots of other fun vehicles, maps and street signs in the collection that would be fun to use in quilts.

So, what would this block look like in a quilt? Here are a few different designs:

layout1 100 Blocks Volume 6: Disappearing Act

Layout #1

Here’s a 9 block layout with the blocks all in the same orientation. I like the secondary design that you see in the corners where the blocks intersect.

layout2 100 Blocks Volume 6: Disappearing Act

Layout #2

This layout rotates every other block. Two different secondary designs are formed when the blocks intersect. I really like this layout!

layout3 100 Blocks Volume 6: Disappearing Act

Layout #3

The blocks are oriented differently in each row. I’m not crazy about the block intersections in this layout.

Let’s try some different colors.

color1 100 Blocks Volume 6: Disappearing Act

Color variation #1

This is the same layout as #3 above but with primary colors against a gray background. Somehow the block intersections don’t look so bad in these colors.

color2 100 Blocks Volume 6: Disappearing Act

Color variation #2

This is the same layout as #2 above with a dark background and gradated pinks. This could be my new favorite!

color3 100 Blocks Volume 6: Disappearing Act

Color variation #3

Back to layout #3 again with a dark background and autumn colors—not bad. I still like layout #2 and the secondary designs formed in the corners.

Which one do you like? Leave me a comment by midnight tonight (11/12/12) MST letting me know which quilt design is your favorite, and I’ll randomly select one lucky winner to receive a copy of 100 Blocks, volume 6 and one of the coveted 100 Blocks, volume 6 mugs. The winner is Stephanie, comment #67.
