Hello! I hope you enjoyed the blog tour last week and got to visit with some of our wonderful designers. This week the staff here at Quiltmaker will share thoughts about our blocks, so be sure to check back each day. And, there will be more giveaways!! More about that later.
My block, Disappearing Act, came about as I played with shapes on graph paper. That’s usually how I design blocks, and sometimes quilts. The nice thing about graph paper is that it’s portable. Someone gave me a little pad of quilter’s graph paper that I keep in my purse—it’s easy to pull out when inspiration strikes. You never know where you’ll be when you see something that reminds you of a quilt block or design!
Let’s look at my block:
I used fabrics from a collection called Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Soho solids, all from Timeless Treasures. There are lots of other fun vehicles, maps and street signs in the collection that would be fun to use in quilts.
So, what would this block look like in a quilt? Here are a few different designs:
Here’s a 9 block layout with the blocks all in the same orientation. I like the secondary design that you see in the corners where the blocks intersect.
This layout rotates every other block. Two different secondary designs are formed when the blocks intersect. I really like this layout!
The blocks are oriented differently in each row. I’m not crazy about the block intersections in this layout.
Let’s try some different colors.
This is the same layout as #3 above but with primary colors against a gray background. Somehow the block intersections don’t look so bad in these colors.
This is the same layout as #2 above with a dark background and gradated pinks. This could be my new favorite!
Back to layout #3 again with a dark background and autumn colors—not bad. I still like layout #2 and the secondary designs formed in the corners.
Which one do you like? Leave me a comment by midnight tonight (11/12/12) MST letting me know which quilt design is your favorite, and I’ll randomly select one lucky winner to receive a copy of 100 Blocks, volume 6 and one of the coveted 100 Blocks, volume 6 mugs. The winner is Stephanie, comment #67.

easy peasy–layout 2, variation 2 (i think because the intersections form that secondary design)
Me too! I like layout 2 and the way it forms larger diamonds.
Oh, I like variation number 2, and the color combos for that are endless!
Love combo 2 in the pinks as well. Just stunning.
I love layout number 3. Very modern feel.
I like layout #2 in the original colors.
I like layout # 2 the best. It would be such a lovely quilt with that layout (not that the others wouldn’t be lovely!).
I love the movement of Layout 3. It is busy and looks like it is going somewhere.
Love the red and yellow too.
I liked layout #1 the best & the diagonal pattern it makes.
I like layout #3 the best. Thanks for the chance to win.
I love layout #2 in the pinks with the dark background–stunning! Thanks for sharing!
I was leaning toward layout 2. The layout in the pinks finished “leaning me!” I love layout 2.
I really like the layout with the pinks! This is a really interesting block……
This is a very interesting and versatile block, Carolyn! I was immediately drawn to the Color Variation #1. The combination of the colors, design and contrast really makes it.
Layout 2 for sure. I like the original color, but I think any color combination would work as long as it was bold and not muted/monochromatic.
Layout Variation 2. The block begs for scraps. It would be interesting and allow the focus to be on the pattern. Nice block!
Count me in for Layout 2 as well.
Layout #2 is my favorite. I’ve never made a disappearing block, but they look very fascinating.
I like color variation #1. Great block.
I like layout #2
Color variation #2 is my favorite for sure! Love it! Thanks for another chance to win.
Like others, I like #2 with the pinks. It wold look good with other monochromatic color schemes, too. Fun!
I love the block, and layout 2, especially in the yellow, black and grey.
Color variation #2 is my favorite.
Layout #2 gets my vote – love blocks that allow for different settings!
I love Layout #2 in the original colors. It is amazing how much potential is locked away in that block – great job!
color variation #1 is my favorite!
I love layout #2! It makes me think of busy bees!
I love the color variation # 2
Very Cool !!!
Layout 2 &color variation 2 are my favorites.
Definitely Color Variation #2!! Thanks for the opportunity to enter your wonderful giveaway!
2 is my favorite..
I think I like layout #1 the best, with #2 a close second! Loved the Blog Tour! Thanks for another chance to win!
Color variation #2 is my favorite. Could be that’s because it’s pink!
My favorite is the third one, in lavendar, very very pretty.
Layout #2. Looking for a new project to start today and this just might be the one.
Layout 2 gets my vote! I can see so many color possibilities for your block! Thank you for the opportunity to win the mag and mug!
I love the pinks! I have noticed that colors speak to me more than the block design, if I don’t care for the color scheme I have trouble liking the pattern. Luckily I am good at imagining different colors used. I think all 3 variations would be stunning with the right color combinations.
kool block… interesting ideas…
I like layout 2 also.
Really like Color Variation 2. Would love to win!
I like color variation #2
Layout #1 would be so fun using Christmas Prints!…Now if I could just squeeze out a few extra hours in the day I might could get started on one of these for Christmas!
I like layout #2 the best.
thanks!
Hello I like the #3 with a dark background and autumn colors.
Color Variation #2, hot pink and black oh my ! My favorite!
lisamcgriff@hotmail.com
I like color way 2.
Thanks
I like both Layout 2 & Color Variation 2. Very versatile block!
I like Layout 2, especially in the pink and black. I see flowers! Thanks!
Layout #2 gives the most graphic impact of the three designs. The one that resembles streak of lightening is interesting, also.
#2 in the original colors
Layout number 2 gets my vote — and I like it best in the first color combo — it’s a bit calmer — not so much going on that you can’t figure out the layout. I’ve really enjoyed the blog hop — there are so many interesting blocks.

Color variation #2 is my favorite
Well, I looked at the layouts and variations numerous times, changed my mind just as many times, but finally decided I like layout #2 and color variation #3.
Layout #2 – love the secondary design – and the softer colors.
I think you are right. I like the second layout best because there is more visual interest
I love layout #3 very much in both colour variations. Reminds me of zigzags but it is more moving! Great!
I’m sold on Layout #2.
Layout #2 please!
I love color variation #1 with the brights! Made me want to shout and dance for joy. I’m anxiously awaiting the release of the magazine so I can get started.
I like layout #2, especially in the color variation.
What happens if you set it on point?
Like the graduated pinks in color variation 2. Pink is my favorite color so I am probably instantly prejudice. Thanks for the chance to win.
I like layout #2. Fun block with lots of possibilities! Great job!
I like layout #2 the best. I prefer the calming effect of the original color variation to the pink. I need to play catch up with the previous block issues
it’s a tough choice between layout 2 and 3 for me, but I think I would go with layout 2 if I had to choose only one.
I’m with you with the Color Variation #2, it looks breathtaking with the pink and black, the other layouts and variations look nice though!, it’s a great job!!!
I like layout number 2, even though I am partial to anything pink. I guess #3 is a very close second.
I love layout #2 also! I an imagine it in all of my blues I’ve been collecting.
Beautiful pattern! Can hardly wait to try it.
I like layout 2, I think I might give it a try. Thanks for the idea.
Amazing layouts for this block. They all look so different from each other too and you would never guess they were the same block.
My favorite is color variation #2.
I like thee black and pink one cause I just love those colors..
I like all off the layouts, but I have to say I think layout # 3 is my favorite!! I have always had a thing for zig-zags and chevrons!!!
I love blocks that make secondary designs in a quilt…I really like layout #2…so much movement in the quilt…thanks for another great design.
I just love Color Variation number 2! That one is just STUNNING!!! What an attention getter!!
I like the yellow/gray palette. I’m not a pink girl, I love purple, but I love bright colors on dark backgrounds. So my favorite is layout #2 with the secondary designs!
All your designs look great but my favorite is
#2
I really liked the second layout because of the secondary design but then I saw the pink and black and thought it was so dynamic. That is my new favorite.
For me your layout 3 has wonderful movement-looks like an updated log cabin style! And your color variations 2 and 3 apply that movement. Your posting gives me lots to think about in my own pattern/color quilting journey. Thanks!!
I love layout #3. It’s really uses the Disappearing aspect.
I look forward to each issue of Quiltmaker magazine and would love to be able to drink my coffee from the 100 blocks mug. I also like to get the newest issue of 100 blocks just to see how many of the blocks that I would like to make. Keep up the good work everyone.
I like layout #2 best, but the others are interesting too. Thanks for showing how a block can really change its look with varied colors and layouts. I’m excited to get this magazine — I’ve loved every issue so far!
Love the 2nd colorway the pink one and I don’t really like pink
They all are wonderful
Layout 2 with the pinks and black. The zig-zag layout is cool as well.
I like variation #3 but with the #2 color variation.
I like Layout #1 for the secondary design in the corners, and I like Color Variation #3 because the vertical wave look is the most obvious of all the color variations (to me, anyway).
I really like the Color variation #3. Love this block! Tamsyn
I like color variation #2.
I, too, like layout #2. It seems less “monotonous” that the others; ie it has more going for it. Really like blocks like this that are so versatile. Thank you.
I really like layout # 2 the best, but they are all great.
For me, layout 2 is the clear winner.
I like the one with the primary colors but I also like the pink one also. Thanks for the chance to win…
I like #2 best!
I really like layout design #2. Thanks for sharing the ideas and for the opportunity to win — especially 100 Blocks!
I like the layout for number 2. Very different.
Carol L
I like layout 2 as well, it looks good in all the colorways you showed. would be fun to make. Thanks for the oppertunity to win.
I love the block 9 layout. I would like to make this one. I’ll queue it up on my quilt list!
Oops, sorry I meant the number 2 layout as well.
I am a pink girl and I really like it on the black background. A simple design that looks difficult-great find.
I love variation #3 – love that zig zag movement in the quilt.
I like layout #2 & color variation #2
Layout #4 would look AWESOME in Christmas Colors.
I agree with you, #2 with colour variation is great!! Pink and black together….WOW!!!
Gun, Sweden
I like the second layout best, but in the yellows and neutrals rather than the pinks. I think that the bright colors hide some of the detail.
I like layout #2!
Thanks for the giveaway!
I love number 2 layout.
I like the pinks laid out like flowers.
I like layout #2 the best although the others are all nice.
I really like Layout #2 because there are a number of ways you can view that quilt. That would be a great quilt design.
Layout #3 gets my vote!!
I like color varation 3 because it is so colorful. Thanks
I LOVE THE GRADATED PINKS BLOCK!!
I actually like layout #1, I like the design it forms where the blocks meet.
Layout number 2 – but Layout number 1 is a close second.
Well, it was a hard choice between #1 or #2. The strong balance in two is appealing, as is the secondary design, but trying to push out of my comfort zone lately, so the angular #1 it is… in fall colors: rust, burnt orange (largest pieces), evergreen, a lighter green and brown (smallest pieces) on a soft gold background. Thanks for the chance to dream… And i hope to win!
I really like variation #2.
I think the second layout wins.
My fav is color variation #2. Really pretty.
I like them all but layout #1 is my favorite.
I like layout 3, interesting shapes I havent seen before. Thanks for the chance!
I love layout 2 and variation 2
This is the way that caught my eye. It is the Color Variation No.2 with the dark background and gradated pinks. This is so pretty. The way you change blocks and the different colors used simply amaze me how a block can suddenly change right before your eyes.

I like layout #3. Thank you for the 100 blocks book. Can’t wait to get it.
Layout #2 is my favorite!
susieq_wva@frontier.com
such a cool block. My favorite layout is #2 especially in the pink colors.
I like layout #3.
I like them all, amazing how a few rotations and they look so different. However, I like the first one, variation 1, there seems to be more space (airiness) around the blocks.
Wow, it is amazing what a diffence color makes. I like the number two in pink myself. That quilt just seems to pop to me.
I havent won a copy of the magazine yet, I sure would like to! But anyway, I like the pink variation way over the others!
A great block. All layouts are nice, but I really do like layout #2 best because of the secondary design it makes.
I like layout 3 and color variation 1
Carolyn, I liked all of the variations of the Disappearing Act quilt block, but my favorite was Color variation #1 Layout #3. The movement created by the colors and
the layout would be a favorite both of mine and my grandson who is 8 and builds creative layouts in the same colors with Legos. Thank you for the opportunity to enter. Mary Arline
I like layout #2 in both color variations. The secondary designs are interesting and I like the chain effect created across the quilt. A very fun block with lots of possibilities. I can also imagine fussy cutting a design in the large center square. Thanks for the inspiration with your block and the 99 others in this issue.
My preference is for Layout #2. To me it has the best secondary designs. Looking forward to picking up the magazine at the end of this week. I saw lots of wonderful blocks while taking the blog tour.
Hi! Both layout #2 and color variation 2 are my favorites! Although I do like your original colors for layout #2 too! Thanks for another chance to win!
Just love #1….Catches my eye…Love the fabrics you chose….Thanks for the chance to win.
Susan
I really like #2~ the secondary pattern is so cool.
Thanks for the chance!!
I like layout 2 with the dark background.
I like layout 2.
I really like layout #1. Thanks for the chance to win the magazine and a mug!
I like layout #2 but I really like your original block and the grat use of fabrics.
Layout #2 is the one I like the best!
I like the disappearing layout one. Very cool.
I like layout #1 in the gold and gray colors.
Layout #2 is my favourite. I love the secondary design that appears and the grey and gold colours.
I love #2 with Pinks. Lovely combination and the pattern really jumped out at me. Thanks for the chance to win.
I love the #2 Design! It just jumped out at me and said “Make Me, Make Me”
Layout 2 with color 2 – love the gradated pinks! Thank you!
You saved the best for last! I love the autumn colors.
I like layout #2… all are great….
I like layout #2 but, I like the color variation #1 in layout #3.
I agree with you, my favorite is layout #2. Thanks for a chance.
I love the pink color variation #2. I like the dark background with it. This variation makes the block design look totally different than the other block positioning.
I like layout #2 it would lend itself to many color combinations, but there is something that appeals to me in layout #1. The color choices made in that layout can change the focus of the patterns, both primary and secondary, in so many ways.
I have to agree that #2 is the best one. I like the secondary design, no matter what colors are chosen.
I like #2; so many cool layouts! Thanks for sharing.
I also like the variation #3. It’s a beautiful look for fall.
I equally love layout no. 2 and 3. The thing about no. 3 is it’s a neat and different way to do a zig zag that you usually just see in half sq. triangle blocks. Very cool!
I like the versatility of the pattern. I do like the brighter ones……
I really like Layout 3 in the second colourway.
Such a versatile block.
Love layout number 2! It looks like flowers to me. Number one is nice, but doesn’t have the “zing” that number 2 has. Number 3 is just okay to me. That’s the fun of playing with blocks, there is always another way to set them if you don’t like the original!
I like layout #2.
I like the layout in #2 and the colors in #3, that would make a stunning fall piece.
Debbie
I really like the color combo of variation 2. It’s just so stunning and the color options are endless!
Layout #2 is my favorite. Very inspiring block and quilts. Thanks for all you do!!
I like layout #2. The secondary pattern is nice. Thanks for a great magazine!
I like layout #2
Layout 2 is the one for me!
Variation # 3 is my favorite..thank you!
I like Layout #1 the best and I don’t know why! Great block!
Color Variation #2 has 3-D possibilities. Looking down and in the middle of each flower.
I prefer the color variation #2. Very nice block.
Layout number 2 is my favorite. I love it in the gradated pinks.
I like Layout #2. Variation #3 the bright and bold colors!
Colour variation 1 does it for me, I enjoy the strength in the colours and the free flowing movement through the white space of the blocks. Thanks for sharing.
Yep..Hands down #2…Really pop with the colors. Like to make it with baltics.
I love #2 with batiks! thanks!
I like variation #3
thank you!
I love #2, and would like to use it with my Sew Mama Sew fabric.
I like layout #1 with the black/yellow/white colors.
No. 4 is my choice. We make quilts for graduating Seniors in my church quilting group, and I’ve been looking for a good “man” pattern. Thanks!
