We hope you enjoyed our 100 Blocks designer blog tour last week. The inspiration and creativity was so fun and amazing!
I love wool applique, so it’s no surprise that I designed my block with wool. Did you know that you can applique wool onto more than just wool? You can use cotton, flannel or just about anything. I used fabrics from two collections called Quilter’s Linen and Stitch by Robert Kaufman. Both fabric lines have some great prints and colors.
I first made the tree and branch then added the wool bird and leaves. Fusing down the wool first makes the stitching really easy. You can set it down and pick it up anytime and not worry about the pieces falling off or moving around.
I’m envisioning this block with another little bird friend…easy to make by shrinking down the applique pattern.
Or maybe with another block or two to make tall skinny tree, maybe with a family of birds. Or a nest or a birdhouse? Hmmm, volume 7 maybe?

What do you envision with this block? Leave me a comment by midnight tonight (11/14/12) MST letting me know which quilt design is your favorite, and I’ll randomly select one lucky winner to receive a copy of 100 Blocks, volume 6 and one 100 Blocks, volume 6 mug. Happy Quilting!

I think this would be cute in a wallhanging.
I think the block with multiple birds would be better than just one. Maybe have a bird feeder hanging in the tree, with birds perched in it and on it, as well as on the tree branches. Might add a little snow in there somewhere, too. Perhaps a wall hanging would be nice to hang up close to a window. The inspiration for my idea comes from our several bird feeders that have many birds in them, especially in the wintertime.
A quiltlet with two birds appeals to me (but I’d really like the red bird to be included). Great little side table decoration.
amei este bloco!! suave e delicado.
em uma colcha infantil com trapunto e quilt livre!!
eu gostei com uma família de passaros!
obrigada que benção!
I really love the tall version with the 3 branches, I think this would make a great growth chart with a tape measure sewn onto the tree trunk.
I like the longer version! First, I thought it would be great as a table runner, but who would want to spill on that?! So I think instead as a wall hanging with simple nine patch border, for an entyway, would be just darling. You could take it a step further by using a few Christma fabric or colors, and a tiny envelope and tiny Christmas ornaments to the beaks!
I think it would make a lovely growth chart for a special child.
I think the tall one would make a great wall hanging – using some bug fabric in the borders. Thanks.
I think I will use this block as the base for a growth chart for my 10 month old grandson. Using several blocks (and adding a bird here and there!) as the foot markers and making a block with a birdhouse for the top with his name and birthdate appliqued on the house.
This is a great block!
Maria
I can see a gorgeous table runner or my second vision is a tryptich Cause it looks like all the birds from the neighbourhood are gathering for a chat
I would like the tall version of the three blocks. I would like to see three more panels, one for each season — a few bright green leaves for spring, more and darker leaves for summer, colored leaves for autumn and snow for winter. All together in a wall hanging.
I see the tall tree version of this block as a great growth chart. Just add the height markings on the side of the tree. I’ve been loving all the 100 blocks posts. I can’t wait to see all the blocks when I get my hands on a copy of the magazine.
I love them all!!! It looks like something I would want to make for a newly wed couple with their names embroidered on each bird’s wing. As their family grows (children) I would make another little bird to add to the branches. A new home… maybe a nest on a branch. This would make a great family keepsake and tradition. Of course I would love to wake every morning and start my day drinking my first cup of tea from that mug in my sewing room.
)
I like the block with two birds. I would probably “branch” out and fill an entire tree with these adorable guys. Thanks.
I love them all they are so cute!
Thanks for the giveaway!
I love this block! I think it would make a great wall hanging.
I like the first one but I believe that’s because of the colors. It’s so cute.
I might make a long, skinny wallhanging with an owl on one of the branches, too. Cute block! Thanks for sharing and for the chance to win!
I like the one with the 3 bird blocks (but 4 birds!) What a great jumping off point!
I like the one with several birds as a wall hanging. All are pretty cute!
I have a huge stairwell and a wallhanging of several of these blocks would be perfect!
Very cute block. My favorite is the one with the three branches and lots of birds. I like the idea (someone mentioned) of using it as a growth chart. Thanks for a chance.
I love the family of birds – it would be a beautiful wall hanging in those small areas that are difficult to put anything into. Then one could make one for each season – spring flowers and green leaves, summer foiliage, fall leaves, and bare limbs with snow.
This is one of my favorites. I would love this as a pillow.
I would make the tree with branches going both ways and a have a whole family of birds sitting on the branches – more of a lap quilt.
I love the tall tree with many birds but I would make them in red (my favorite color). Very cute.
I like the block with the two birds. I could see a quilt with a forest of trees instead of one tall long tree, maybe even with branches going right and left.
I like the block with the two birds — then, I can see it with some other blocks and birds scattered throughout. The use of the wool adds a lot of depth to the color.
I can see a long wallhanging on a skinny wall – the birds would be sitting and flying in different areas of the quilt.
I like them both. Love the red bird:)
My family knows how much I enjoy birds. Whenever they want to get a gift for me, it often includes birds of some sort. The tall tree version would be my pick for a wall hanging! Fun!!
I think the one with the big and little bird would make a cute pillow for a baby room
. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the new magaZine.
Mary
Love your cute little bird block! I envision making a small wall hanging to use with some children’s bird books during PK-K storytime in the library.
I like your idea of a very cute wallhanging in a child’s room. So cheerie and cute. Just pefect for a child. Thank you for the wonderful chance to win that priceless magazine and, of course, that mug.

I love the tall tree with the bird family. It could stand alone as a cute wall hanging or could be part of a larger quilt. I always like things with cute little birds!
I’m new to quilting, so I haven’t tried applique myself. I might have to look into a little more.
I love them all! To hard to pick out just one.
#2! Mommy and baby bird. But the long one is a cute Springtime wall runner, but add the nest or birdhouse. Maybe some yoyo flowers.
Thanks!
These are really cute blocks. They would be a cute wall hanging. Thanks for the
chance to win!

I’m thinking this would be perfect at a family reunion….a tree full of birds then have everyone autograph a bird with their whole name and birthday. I better get busy….summer will be hear before I know it! I would like to see a series of little birds and with whimsical bird houses, feeders and nests.
I like the tall branch with many birds. I can see it on a narrow wall space with an appliqued “Welcome to Our Nest”. I love birds and have many different items with birds around my house. Thanks!
I like the tall, skinny tree with several birds. I would add a cat at the bottom and make a wallhanging. Very cute pattern!
It would make a cute couch pillow for a friend who loves her birds and feeders.
I love how the 100 blocks volumes inspire creativity – there are some great suggestions in the comments! I think I would make a square wallhanging for my office wall using variations on the first two blocks and put sashing in-between. I’d reverse one element in each quadrant – the bird(s) in one, the side of the tree the branch comes out on in another, etc. and probably change the color of the birds in each block.
I like the 2-bird block the best however, I think a wall hanging, table runner or a lap quilt with both the 2-bird block and the 1-bird block would look great! LOVE the birds!
HI! MY FAVORITE IS THE LITTLE ‘RED BIRD BLOCK’! I’D MAKE THESE INTO A NEAT LITTLE BABY QUILT! THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
I like the tall skinny with lots of different birds. Don’t know if I would add a house – or maybe a bird feeder??
I like the tall one. And I have just the place to hang it. Thanks for the inspiration.
I love the long quilt version. I would have to add a bird house to it and maybe a squirrel hole with him peaking out. I think the block is very cute and versatile for a lot of different ideas to add to it and enhance it.
I like the one with a lot of birds on it, that’s like three blocks put together. Really cute!
A wood with a lot of birds in all kinds of colours!! Wouldn´t that be nice?
Gun, Sweden
Oh, that is a cute block. The bottom design would make such a darling growth chart. Yep, that is what I would have to make with it.
I like the version with more birds. they are just so cute.
This block would look good in a columnar style row quilt, perhaps intermixed with some pinwheel or birdhouse blocks in alternating columns. I think of it as a vertical row quilt.
Cute! How about a catapillar scooting away from the worm?
a skinny wall hanging full of cute birds. I really enjoyed the blog tour! thanks
I am liking the bird with the little friend best.
I see a whole treeful of birdies all making a “twitter”! Love the whimsical nature of your design!
A little birdhouse may look cute out on a limb. All of your designs are so cute!
I like the long version with lots of branches. Or maybe branches on both sides??
I think it would look nice as an addition to a corner of a quilt to give it a little touch or as an alternate block using different fabrics for the birds.
Debbie
The long version reminds me of a child’s growth chart. With the long tall tree, one could easily use it for that. You can make it seasonal with more leaves for spring/summer, fall colored leaves to hint at autumn, and of course leafless for winter.
I always welcome a bird pattern. My mom always loved watching birds at the feeder from her window. I’d do a mom with a couple babies wallhanging.
I like them all, make them into a quilt, trees of long blocks separated by a blue marbled sky look fabric. Each tree having different birds and some bird nests/houses/feeders scattered around. Already sketching quilt out, thanks for sharing block with different looks.
Very cute bird, I like the third design, just needs a cat on the ground watching the birds! Thanks for the chance, didnt win one this tour, now waiting for the stores to put them out.
I think it would make a nice growth chart for a kid.
I think this block done in wool would look great on pillows on my guest room bed.
Oh My this is just up my alley!!! Or tree!!! I love applique and love using wool for it. I like all of them but would go with the longer one and add a few more birds or maybe a butterfly to two!!! Thanks for the chance to see your block and the chance to win a copy of the book and a cute mug!!
Cute block! I love the tall skinny tree with the family of birds. They just need a nest with some eggs in it. Thanks for the fun giveaway.
I like the single bird, I would add a nest with several speckled blue eggs. They are all cute. Thanks for the giveaway.
A wall hanging where the birds are framed by a window–maybe with a cat looking out at them.
I like the idea of having more than one bird in the block. I’d like to see a long skinny wall hanging with a large bird family (assorted sizes) just hanging out together.
My favorite is the block with the two birds. Some fun stitching could add alot of interest to the piece.
I think I’d add a nest with a baby bird, and make it the centre of a wall hanging. Even a birth announcement embroidered into the corner. So many great ideas on this list!
I think a wallhanging with several birds in the tree and a cat on the ground looking up at the birds.
Oh, this would be very cute if it was very tall! I could hang it on my tall, skinny walls!
Love block #2 looks like Mom and baby. But all are beautiful.
I like the tall one with the bird family. Maybe a birdhouse block, a few Spring flowers, and an appliqued leaf border!
Thanks for the contest.
I love this as a tall, thin wall hanging between my kitchen windows!
I like the tall tree with several branches. How about adding a nest?
Great wallhanging! Really cute!
I like the long version but it needs a sun or some clouds
, I would use it as a wall hanging.
I really like your tall tree version. This could be a great way to fill up space when making a sampler quilt of different sized blocks. I am thinking of where I could hang a framed version of the one bird block. I have been collecting and loving bird print fabrics recently. I could color coordinate this to a quilt recently completed.
My favorite is the red bird! It reminds me of the pretty cardinals that are in my yard here in the mountains of West Virginia!
I think it would be cute as a larger tree with baby birds in various baby colors for a baby quilt.
The birdhouse idea with a couple of your little birds would be adorable!
The blocks (especially the one with two birds) would make a lovely children’s quilt.
I like the various birds on the different tree branches. It makes me think of how we should all try to get along in this world. I might add a heart or two on the tree trunk with a special someone’s initials “carved” in it.
A long wall hanging – in natural colors – kind of a primitive look
I like them all but if I have to choose a favorite I like the top one with the cute red bird.
A long wall hanging in natural colors – primitive style
I love the red bird, but I like the one with 3 birds in it. And a shower curtain came to mind with several trees with birds, maybe a few birdhouses and even a birdbath and bird feeder. It’s for the birds!
I can see this as a family tree… names and birthdates added… one bird as an ornament.
Love the birds. Have only done one wool project but really enjoyed the ease of traveling with it. Love that mug too!
I see it as a Halloween wallhaning. Have the background like a nigh sky with a bat hanging from the branch of the tree. I guess I’m still in Halloween mode.
I like the tall one. It could make a really cute advent calendar if it was taller, using birds, ornaments, leaves, snowflakes, gifts, etc. as little pockets. I even have the perfect spot to hang it so I can admire it while having my morning latte in that awesome mug, lol!
I really like the 4 bird block. Not only would it make a great wall-hanging, it really reminds me of the scene outside my kitchen window since we hung a couple of birdfeeders this summer! I might have to add the feeder . . .
Sew Tweet would be very cute for a mug rug. Very cute.
I love them, it would make a wonderful wall hanging. Thanks for this giveaway.
Wool intrigues me right now, so choose the wool bird. Thanks for the chance to win.
I love these bird blocks for a great entry way piece framed in a rustic brown or baby blue. As soon as you walk in the front door, to see a tree with several birds would make me feel warm & welcome!
This would make a great growth chart in a nursery!
I love the birds I think it would make a cute wall hanging
I am thinking country birds on many branches, a growth chart. The one of the blocks above that is my favorite is the three branches with many birds. What a great idea for a block!
The one I like the best is the first block with the red bird, because I like the tree fabric and the red bird seems to just pop..
These would make cute throw pillows for the couch. Sure would love to win the Coffee Mug.
i like the 2 birds on the limb because it makes me think of my quilting buddy.
I like the 3rd one because it makes me want to put a measuring tape beside the tree and hang it on the wall to measure the little ones growth.
A growth chart for sure!!
I love the birds on the branches and wool is a favorite of mine. I think that this could make a great wedding gift, a wall hanging for a child or baby’s room or even a growth chart!
Please be sure to let us know what you decide to do with it!
I like the two birds looking at each other. i just wonder what they are saying. i also like the simplicity of the blocks. They look like something I could Do!
I would do them all together they way you have it pictured and use it as a child’s growth chart!
Personally, I love the idea of the family of birds around a birdhouse
I love tree with all the branches. However I would want all bluebirds for my spring table runner!
I like the one with all of the birds. I think it would make a darling quilt with maybe a house and more trees, in a lap quilt. All three of them are wonderful.
I would do a tall skinny wall hanging with different birds f different sizes & shapes. Then I’d stitch family members names onto the birds turning it in to a fun family tree.
I love the multiple birds blocks. I envision this block as a table runner for the dining room. Perhaps add a bird feeder and a border of serger crochet in white to frame the runner. Love it!
I love the multiple birds and would have loved to make it a growth chart for when my boys were little so long ago! awolk at rogers dot com
I like the tall tree with multiple branches and birds. It sure would be cute as a growth chart in my granddaughter’s room.
I, too, think of a child’s growth chart….really cute!
A pretty wall hanging or a lovely quilt for a bird lover.
I like the longer one. It would look great on a long skinny wall or as a table runner.
My vote would be for a wallhanging. However, I do like Susan C.’s idea of a growth chart for her granddaughter’s room. Thanks for the giveaway!
I would make the long one into a growth chart.
This would make a cute baby or young childs quilt.
I envision birdfeeders, birdhouses. and birdbaths with a few cloud blocks mixed in. Your blocks are very inspiring! My favorite is the first with the red bird. Love to
read through the 100 Blocks for new ideas and just enjoying some quiet time to daydream. Thank you for the chance to will the newest inspiration!
I love bird quilts and birds in quilts. I especially love cardinals. So if I were to make these blocks, the birds would probably all be made in shades of red.
I like them all but like the long one the best. I would add the red bird to this group and use it as a wall hanging. Really do like this.
Of course I love the little birds and especially the tall Bird Apartment. Thanks!
I like the 3 branch design best. Adding a cat at the bottom of the tree would be perfect for me (owner of 4). This would make a great wall hanging in a baby’s nursery and I like the idea of several people saying to add a growth chart to the side. Adorable.
I like the tall skinny tree with a family of birds!! I have never tried wool applique and this block is really tempting me to finally give it a try! Thanks for the chance to win the magazine and mug!
I like the idea of a long skinny wallhanging; maybe a bird house of feeder on it too.
I think I would use all of them, make a cute quilt with the different panels, use all different colors for birds even some with patterns on it would be really cute, thanks for the idea, I think I will “steal” it and make one for myself!!! I love birds and think this would look great in my reading room, a little throw for my lap while I read!!
Actually I love them all.. but if I have to pick a favorite – I’ll go with the multiple birds – after all, everyone needs a friend. Cute idea and fun. Thank you.
I like the version that is tall and skinny. I think it would make a great door hanging. I have french doors from my foyer into my kitchen. Sure would be fun to hang those birds on that tall skinny tree on one of those skinny french doors.
I think this would make a darling growth chart.
This issue took me 6 stores to find enough for myself and my friends. I love all the blocks! One of which is done by my first quilting teacher. Thanks for such a fabulous issue. Who would think the local grocery store would carry this book.
Just took a design class Tuesday night. We were to design a quilt using a panel in the center. This square (rectangle of the multiple birds) would be so cute in the middle and designed around to be a baby quilt or a full size quilt for a bird lover. I like it! Think I’ll make one.
Very cute! I like the longest version. I think it would make a cute wall hanging for a child’s height measurements. Might have to add a few more branches!
A 4 seasons series of wall hangings. The block done with background and branch reflecting the seasons.
I like the two birds together. They look like they are having a good “chirp” about the neighbors!
This would be adorable as a family of birds wall hanging given to a new mother-to-be for her baby’s room!
I love the idea of the birds. Bigger, smaller, taller tree, great skinny wall hanging for that space where nothing else fits.
Love the tall tree. I’m seeing a forest!
The little birdies are so cute, I can think of too many things to do with them. As others have said, multiples for a growth chart, a little wall hanging, table runner. I think I would make up a wall hanging of four blocks and add additional touches to suit the season. Spring, nice pastels, Summer, some R/W/B, Fall, autumn colors and falling leaves and Winter, a nice red bird with holly springs and snow. Thanks for a chance to win.
I like the tall skinny tree but would still need to put a red bird on it somewhere. I can see it being used as a wall hanging.
These birdies are so cute! I think a long, thin wall hanging of a treeful of birds would look fab in my kitchen.
yeah, like the other folks, I think it’s a perfect growth chart! It would be lovely as a wall hanging, too (could be made specific to one season, or have one “block” for each season).
I like the tall skinny tree with multiple branches. Really cute idea!
i♥bird blocks! a child’s quilt with all three blocks would be so cute! one long block with the other two beside it … you could gussy it up with sashing and cornerstones and or rick rack and borders – whatever catches your fancy.
This is cute! My last name is Bird, so I can see me doing a family tree! Pun intended!
I would like to see the two birds with a nest and. A baby bird in it.
Cute Birds!! I like the one with multiple branches and several birds.
This would make a cute wall hanging on my skinny was.
Make that wall
I like the family idea…. the more the merrier. I could be a grow chart maybe with some more creativity. Thanks for a chance to win. Janita
I think I would like to make a whole tree of birds as a wall hanging. I think I would make it a family tree and embroider names by each bird
A great wallhanging and a perfect block for vol.7
This is a wonderful wall hanging for a childs room with the measurements up the left side to measure their growth – like their own little “growth chart” Because of the little birds it is for any age or gender. Great idea, thank you.
I like them all but my favorite is the one with two birds. I think a mug rug would be really cute using this. Thanks for the giveaway, I like all the 100 Blocks mags and the cup is great!
I like the elegant simplicity of the original one-bird version.
I love the tree FULL of birds…lots of chirps!
I love the tall tree with the bird family. How about a bird bath added to the scheme of things? It could stand alone as a cute wall hanging or could be part of a larger quilt. Birds remind me of Springtime. Thanks for the chance to win.
