Welcome to Day 1 of Quiltmaker’s Back to School Party! I’m so glad you’re here. Every day this week will be full of fun! A free quilt pattern (sew along with us!), tips and techniques, freebies, giveaways, fabric sponsors and more will be featured. To get started, see Back to School Party Preparations.
There will be several posts each day of the party. Be sure to poke around so you don’t miss anything like a giveaway, a tip or a freebie. Toward the end of this post you’ll find the first two of eight beautiful versions of Frame by Frame, each one from a fabric sponsor.
Frame by Frame Part 1: Cutting
If you still need to choose fabrics and plan your quilt, see the preparations post. Be sure that Fabric #8 has adequate contrast from the rest of the fabrics so that it will show up. You don’t want to do all of that piecing for nothing!
Today, Part 1 covers all of the cutting for this throw-size quilt designed by Diane Nagle of Peddlecar Quilts.
Click here to print the grayscale quilt diagram below.
Click here to print the cutting list.
If you have questions about cutting, please ask them in the comments. We’ll try to respond as soon as possible.
By the way: This is not a race. You don’t need to sew everything this week. It’s just fun to get started together and to see the progress of others. Sew at your own pace and enjoy it, and stop back here often to be sure you get all the parts and pieces of Frame by Frame.

I’d like to try white for the frame, with green and pink. Thanks for the great blog.
I would use black, lime and tangarine and silver – I think some of Pat Bravo’s Oval Elements would look great in this quilt. thanks!
I would be interested in trying the fabric line, Little Black Dress, for this quilt. The blacks, whites and sepia colors remind me of a silent film. I mignt do a bold yellow as the contrasting color, but there would have to be some serious auditions for that major role – ha ha!! Thanks for the chance to win!
I think the frame part would look fantastic in black, but I would love to use light novelty prints on one section, and dark novelty prints in the other. Sort of make it a Film Noir type look. If that makes any sense.
Because of the sense of drama this pattern gives off, I would go with Black and White. It creates the picture of movie film or even the tiles in the Subway in NYC. Thanks for the great giveaway.
I would go with yellows, lime greens, and greys.
Beautiful fabrics! Hope I win something! Lately I’m loving everything blue and yellow, so maybe that’s what I would use for this quilt.
I think shades of pink and purple with dark teal for the frame would be pretty.
I love the red/black/white theme with the aqua scattered throughout – really gives it a neat look.
thanks for the chance to win
I think I would use aqua, red and white colours for the quilt!
I’m planning on creating this quilt with movie theme fabric – I have prints from the Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, The Three Stooges and am hunting for me. I’ll use a black for the contrast color. When it’s done, the quilt will hang in our family/television room.
I love the idea of solid black “frame” with ROYGBIV rows. BRIGHT.
I think I will be either doing it in Kona Solids, or in some great fall batiks I have!!
Thinking golds, navy and white
I think I would be with shades of black, grey and white. This quilt reminds me of a movie reel and or film negatives and those are the colors that would make it look like a movie reel. Thanks for the chance to win.
I would pick black, and shades going from bright yellow to orange to red.
I think Christmas fabrics would look great, not the regular red and green (although that always looks good), I’m thinking more the modern Christmas take.
I would use shades of purple along with green and black. The design is of the quilt is very unique!
I would try Red, white, black and charcoal grey.
I want to make a baby quilt for a little girl my friend has just adopted from China. So I’ll be using “girly” colors-pale pink, hot pink and purple with a little yellow.
It would be nice if you would give us a link to print the pattern part of each post. It would be easier for me than writing it down or back and forth to the computer. Beside that, thanks for a great pattern. Still not sure what colors. Of to my stash wall.
I was leaning towards Stonehenge colors, but I might have to do this one in some gorgeous Australian fabrics. Thanks for the chance to win!
I would use black for the frames and rainbow colors for the contrast
I can see this in dark purples in the middle with graduated lighter shades going out then black to surround the 2″ square in all magenta.
I’m searching my fabric stash for colors that will work. Will probably go with greens and browns.
I think I’d like to use pale oranges, blues and greens. Maybe orange dividing lines and blues and greens for the larger blocks!
I think I would use fall prints with a bright orange for fabric 8. I can’t wait to try this one
I think I’d like to make this for my grandsons in blues and greens with a black border.
I would like to try solids with one novelty print for the center zig zag. Most likely for a child’s bed. I still love black for an accent colour.
I think I would try black, white, and red. This would make a beautiful quilt for my grandchildren.
This is a really interesting pattern (for those of us who like geometrics).
Thanks!
I think you’ve already found it: the black, white & red is perfect. Reminds me of old black & white movies!
Pink, purple and lime green! Thanks for the chance to win.
This pattern would make a beautiful Christmas quilt with lots of tradional reds and greens with a really dark forest green for the frame!
i know it’s been done to death, but i still love yellow, aqua, and gray!
My fabrics are rich, warm fall colors-wonderful to snuggle under!
pastel colours in a rainbow, with dark grey for the frames. But I guess its not an international competition
I would love to see this in shades of blues, from pale to deep, with navy as Fabric 8. I’m sure it would really be pretty!
I love tghis quilt. Not too feminine, but could be with the right colours. I think I would choose greys, black, yellow and maybe a lime green.
I’m thinking batiks in bright colors, so it will look a little like a stain glass effect. The colors will shine through the little squares and look a little like movie film.
I really love all the fabrics. My election is for the principal squares would use Troy 1457-4, after one row with PWEM036.Aqua and other with Troy 1455-2, then another with PWEM036.Aqua 1455-3 and again with Troy, alternating so on to complete the quilt. Thank you again for the chance to win
I love the red, so I’d use chocolates and some white background with browns, blacks.
I think it’s time for some purples and yellows for a new quilt.
How about some metallic asian prints with matching solid gold for the frames? Thank you for the chance to win!
I’m thinking either chocolate brown & peach or chocolate brown & teal. Love the contests & patterns…..thanks!
Perhaps an eye spy theme in the frames. Could do a yellow brick road. Or do family pictures in the frames.
I would use a dark blue-green for the frames with various light blues and one row would be of swimming fish!
I would have solid black for the frames and black & white prints for the rest of the quilt. The first time I saw this quilt on the website I decided to download the directions so I could make it as a future gift for my godson who is a professional photographer and uses black & white for many of his striking photos.
I would try this in a red white black combo. Fun!
Sorry I am well you know. Funny about fabrics and how they look in a finished piece. Everything I look at of late seems directional. Maybe it is because the color and fabric I use is so much a part of my interest in quilting, but I get bogged down in choosing based on what I see in my mind the finish product to be. This quilt design will surely set my mind to spinning. ha
We have been looking for a pattern to use for a group sewing for charity. This one was suggested, I like it very much. I am going to work with childrens fabrics and make it bright and lively. Thank for being here so we can all work together for others.
Mason Threadbearers
I would choose bright colors of batiks with black for the frames so the colors would pop out at you.
I think that this pattern would be great with a novelty print that is based on a movie. I think the pattern looks like strips of film! I’m thinking the Wizard of Oz, or may the Cat in the Hat for the big areas, and a dark, probably black , for fabric #8 so that it would really look like film strips.
For the blocks I would use red, blue and green prints. For the frames I would use a yellow tonal. And, of course, I would love to win a fabric bundle!
Thanks
I would use purples & pinks with either a charcoal or brown frame.
Well today I’m feeling like a ‘brown’ type of girl. So I would pick dark brown, tan, and light blue. Thanks for the giveaway. THis is going to be fun.
Ooh – I just bought a piece of the large La Dee Da floral. It would work nicely with a dark teal for the frames, some fuschia, a lighter teal print, and a white with a grey floral. Thanks for the chance.

I think landscape fabrics might work in the large areas with the frames being black.
ExciTed to get started!
it would have to be aqua colours for me! or red white and blue for the jubilee and olympics here in the UK
Purple, green, and nutural batiks
I love this cute design. The color ways in these two bundles make attractive quilts.
I would use all my super hero fabric scraps to make this one. The boys would just love it.
I love the colors in both of the fabrics, would not change them. I would however take small pictures, like school wallet photos, and print them out on fabric to then applique on the “film portion” of the design. I have a granddaughter about to finish High School and a quilt for her Mother to hug when she leaves for college would be great. I have been looking for a design that would work well for the idea and this one is great!

I am going to try this with deep navy blue for the “small frames” and teals, aquas and limes for the “colours”. I think that this one will be fun to make…..can’t wait to get started….

I have a challenge quilt I need to make for my guild and I have to use 3 paticular shades of green, mauve, and blue, so I would probably add white and black to them. I love this pattern.
My first thought was a color wheel bit, with contrasts coming from both the top and bottom. Does that make sense? Technicolor alive.
This pattern makes me think of the black and white movies I watch with my family, so I’d like to do it in blacks, whites and grays. Really wish there was a fabric with all the movie stars of the 1940′s–that would be perfect in a quilt for my mother!
Would definitely like to try holiday theme…and add some machine embroidery along the “stair steps.”
I’m cutting fabric for a quilt now in shades of green, blue and purple. This pattern would look good in those colors, blues and greens for the squares and a deep, dark purple for the frames.
I would choose blues, yellows, and white, for the frames.
I would use greens and purples and use a lavender for the frames.
This time of year I am thinking fall colors of orange, purple, lime, black, and maybe grey for a Frame by Frame quilt. This is so much fun Quiltmaker! Thanks.

I am leaning towards using greys, black, white and either yellow or red.
I would love to see Teal, lavender, lime green with white frames.
Still looking for my Red/Orange Batik. Local shop getting order in this week. Have all the rest and am getting really excited.
a patriotic quilts featuring reds andblues would be nice OR a summer quilt with bright colors would be fun too..
Purples, greens n browns would be nice in this pattern. Batiks are my favorites. Thanks for giving us all this chance. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
I’d have to go with solid black “frames” surrounding the small squares of bright (rainbow) solids that “pop”, with the diagonal “rows” in black-on-white, swirling, overall (non-geometric) patterns, to break up the strong lines; perhaps even just plain solid white. Then, as I put the sections together, I’d randomly piece in other small squares or swirls of color to add cohesiveness! If I was being really creative, I’d piece in narrow bands of color down the centers of the solid black sections…or maybe in small diagonal bands in the solid black sections!! Or maybe applique big flowers over top of the “lattice”….so many ideas, so little time!
I love this quilt and the colors but would like in a PDF format as it is easier to find later. Thanks!!

Black and white all the way!!!

LizE

I am leaning toward black, grey, white and some yellow tossed in
Thanks for the great giveaway! Good luck, Everyone!!
I am going to use Yuletide Magic for a Christmas quilt. I ad to cut 1 row and 1 column so that I could get by with the amount of fabric I had in this collection.
I have various bee prints that I’d use to represent my daughter’s school mascot and colors. Maybe I’d back it with fleece to take to the football games to keep her warm. Black and gold (or more like yellow) and white are the colors I’d choose.
I would use blue, green, yellow and brown for the frames. Thanks for the chance at your giveaway.
Still bouncing ideas for colors around the cutting table-guess I have too wide a collection and need to put some away to narrow down the color choices-of course, if I win a pack of fabric that would make it so much easier!

Hi!
Thanks for this wonderful quilt idea and for the giveaway! I’m currently into shades of blue for our bedroom. It is such a calm and peaceful color. So, I would choose various blue solids and prints and perhaps batiks (marbled) for a quilt for our room. If it was for my brother, I would use whites, reds, and blacks like your example above. For a little girl’s room, I would use the Free Spirt fabric…and I do have 2 twin goddaughters. ;-D
DeeAnna
I think oranges, yellows, russets, and browns would give this quilt an autumn flavour, just in time for cooler weather.

It should be very pretty.

Joining the party a little late, but too cute not to! I think I’m going to use my “bandana” prints I’ve been collecting for my niece… unless something else grabs me when I peruse my stash….
I totally agree with the colors black, white and brown. I saw your tutorial on your block and I liked the dark colors, which made your quilt into one beautiful one. I really enjoy your blog. You have so much going on it has become an addiction and I am afraid not to come back. Thank you for giving us all a chance to win.
