100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

I’m always drawn to star blocks, so it seemed natural to design a star for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 5. While doodling on graph paper, I played with the idea of different sized stars in the same block and decided on a design where the stars got progressively smaller (or larger depending on how you look at it!).

Here’s Star Glow:

QMMS 120022 BEAM1 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

Star Glow

Blue and yellow are favorite colors of mine, and these fabrics from the Midnight Blue collection by Karen Combs for Troy Riverwoods Collection were perfect. They made each star stand out on its own.

I drew my block in EQ7 by The Electric Quilt Company and played with different quilt layouts. One of the things I love about EQ is the ability to easily use blocks to create different quilt designs. Here are a few of the layouts I came up with.

quilt 1 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

quilt design 1: This layout shows all the blocks in the same orientation.

quilt 2 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

quilt design 2: I rotated the blocks so the small stars all meet at the block intersections.

quilt 3 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

quilt design 3: In this layout, two of the small stars meet at the block intersections.

quilt 5 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

quilt design 4: I rotated the blocks in every other row.

I wanted to design a border for this quilt. I decided to break the block down into the 3 different stars.

large star2 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

large star (12")

medium star2 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

medium star (8")

small star1 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

small star (4")

Using 2 of the different individual stars, I designed these simple borders:

quilt 6 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 5: Star Glow

quilt design 5

There’s one border using 4″ stars and one using 8″ stars (with a different colored background). I think it would be fun to use these individual stars in different combinations for borders as well.

For these designs I used the same colors as my original block, but I can see lots of different coloring possibilities for these quilts.

I enjoy analyzing blocks and designing borders and settings to showcase the blocks. That’s also one of the classes I’ll be teaching at Quiltmaker’s Block Party in Williamsburg, VA August 2–4.

I’d love to have you join me and the other great teachers we have lined up—Debbie Caffrey, Nancy Mahoney, Monique Dillard, Lynda Howell, Carolyn McCormick, Bonnie Hunter and QM Interactive Editor Diane Harris—for a wonderful time in historic Williamsburg. Along with classes from these great teachers, 2 dinners are included with keynote speakers Bonnie Hunter and NY Times best-selling author, Jennifer Chiaverini, author of the popular Elm Creek Quilts novels. Classes are filling up fast, so go to quiltmaker.com now to register for Quiltmaker’s Block Party.

I would be very happy to win this magazin and then get this pattern. And I am very fond of red, so I think I would have made these blocks in various reds on beige background.

  3. wordygirl says:

I was thinking this would be a great block for my nephew, who is a huge fan of “Super Hero colors”, so I’d probably experiment with red, yellow, and blue.

I would use Amish-inspired solids–lots of blues and purples.

  8. Deanna says:

I’ve wanted to make a purple and yellow quilt. Started one, didn’t finish it since the design didn’t work. The Star Glow may work better.

  9. Barbara says:

cheddar, sage green and brown I think … love the block !

I came to the Quilty Pleasures blog after visiting Kay Mackenzie’s “All About Applique”. Her block, “Sitting Pretty”, is adorable! I liked both of the samples she presented – one using 30s type prints and the other using large florals. Made me want to run out and find a copy of the current 100 Blocks so I could start working on my own appliqued baskets and kittens.

The second quilt was all the same yellows but in green backgrounds! If I have a girl in the future, I’d love to do the same with the yellows but in purples backgrounds. Right now I’m working on a 12-block of the month (we’re done with that but I decided to turn mine into a king-sized) based on Chiaverini’s Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler. OMG I love that block. I love your block so much that if I do not win, I am going to buy the book just for that block. It is easy enough, but stunning!! I am the Queen of Stars, and I just have to make it. I love layout 2, where the little stars meet in the middle. I see me now going thru my stash of bali’s. I see a black background, little red, middle green and big blue. Oh I need to finish something so I can do this when I either win or buy the book. You have totally inspired me!!!!

  112. Janice Blake says:

Orange and yellow with green accents.

What a fantastic star design. I just read through 11o comments from all the others about what colors they would use and I thought, “What a fabulous magazine article that would make to show this new star block in a hundred different color variations!!
Well, I havent heard anyone mentioning “scrappy” yet. But I think there would be wonderful possibilites by using shades …light, med and dark of a specific color for each block. I keep my smaller pieces of fabric in colored plastic storage totes RED BLUE Orange Yellow Green Lavender. Reds in the red tote, blues in the blue one. etc.
So it would be a terrific way to use up some of those and then of course I could BUY MORE FABRIC!!! hee hee

My granddaughter is currently into oranges and purples and she asked for stars for her quilt, but I think I’d have to find exactly the right shades. My instinct is to do something striking–blacks, whites, reds, greys. But we’ll see. Thanks for sharing this terrific block!

  135. Donna Amos says:

Love your block. I would go “scrappy” with shades of aquas, browns, a bit of corals and neutrals for the background. I would use your setting #2 that puts the blocks in groups of 4, bringing like kind of tones to the group. May have to try this. Thanks for the drawing chance.

  136. NancyW says:

This is a wonderful pattern. For me it says red, white and blue. It would look great draped over a wicker chair.

Color combination: Black, gray, teal and purple or maybe gold if it needed more of a pop.

  178. Konda Luckau says:

I don’t need to win. I just wanted to tell you that I love your block! What about adding sashing between the blocks that form a star when added to the cornerstones. Then you could make a star in the cornerstone and add two more layers of stars! Or is that taking the idea too far?!?

    thim3@hotmail.com

  204. Gina says:

Your color combinations take me back a few years to when my kids were in high school – blue and gold are their high school colors – and both girls were on the Pom Pon squad, so we used a lot of stars in blue and gold! I am missing something and I am lost, Would you please explain it online in case someone else has the same problem. (It is the unit with a J triangle and 2 I unit). Thank you for taking your valuable time to explain
