Nancy Mahoney is one of the quilt industry’s very prolific designers. You may associate her name with 1930′s fabrics and quilts, because much of her work is focused there. Her most recent fabric line is Nellie’s Garden for P&B Textiles.
We were pleased to have Nancy featured in 100 Blocks Volumes 1, 2 and 3. First she gave us Twirling Star, above. I adore this block, and a quilt using many of these in scrappy fabrics is on my must-do list.
Next, in Volume 2, was Sunburst. Looks like a challenge to be tackled!
And most recently, for Volume 3, Nancy designed Posy Patch.
Nancy has a new book out with That Patchwork Place called Fast, Fusible Flower Quilts.
I really like this book and here’s why:
- Simple shapes to applique: easy enough for a beginner
- Clear instructions on the special techniques needed for these quilts
- Piecing and applique are combined in interesting ways
- 11 patterns for $24.99 means a great value: just $2.27 each
- Designs are easy to visualize in different fabrics
My favorite quilts in Fast, Fusible Flower Quilts are Night Blooms (batiks in amazing blues and oranges) and Amaryllis (see the front cover above)—but there are half a dozen that could easily go on my “must make” list. I’m so excited about Amaryllis that I made a sample block in the fabrics I’m considering.
I believe one indicator of a great pattern is when a quilter can see the design and easily visualize it in fabrics different from those shown. In fact, I can think of so many possibilities for Amaryllis, I might need to make this quilt several times.
A gallery of the quilts is available—great photography! A free desktop wallpaper download is also available for a gorgeous summer view all day long. Find the book on Martingale’s website. And look for Nancy’s next amazing block in 100 Blocks Volume 4, on sale in November!

Beautifull book! I was surprised when I saw her name because I am just finishing a quilt from her book Pairing Up 2-block quilts. Its the “Provene Garden” and I love it! Really enjoyed making it.

I have never done an applique but from what I’ve seen here, this looks like the book to have!
