Linda’s quilt is completely different from the others you’ve seen so far. I think you’ll love it. Linda used an alternate method to piece her project, as shown in the photo below.

Linda made me laugh when she sent me an email:

I debated if I should admit this new method I have tried. Seems to be working just fine! Should I just keep quiet about my method and pretend I am using the method in the magazine? Is it okay to admit to you I am not using the method you have sent me?

I told Linda it was absolutely fine to use a different method, and that in fact we’d share it with readers who might also find it useful.

Use this alternate method if you’d prefer not to use paper foundations.

You can see this post for details on the alternate method, which was also used by Carol.

Side note: I’m so proud of the Scrap Squad! They were chosen because we felt they could handle anything, and they have proven us right. I love it when they innovate!

The Scrap Squad got to help Linda decide on her borders when she sent us the photo below asking for input.

Auditioning borders

Here are some of the Scrap  Squad’s comments:

From Kim: All look good to me……although I am partial to blue and the top blue for the other border but use the red for the inner.

From Jane: I kinda like the bottom one…but could you do a triple border and add a long, thin bit of that yellow between the red and blue?

From Donna: I am partial to the yellow and blue on the right side, but think the narrow red would look good between the background and yellow as a narrow third border.

You can see in the finished quilt what she decided, and it was a great choice! The yellow is a great accent, and the blue wraps the quilt up nicely!

Linda’s finished Spinout

Linda made a smaller version of the quilt because she didn’t have a lot of fabric.

Linda’s version illustrates an important point about yellow: it can be a stunning addition but a little goes a long way. See how she used only two yellow Spinners plus the narrow yellow border? And yet it looks like there is a healthy dose of mustard! For some reason, yellow is a screamer. Think of it as the Tabasco sauce of fabric: a little is fabulous but you might not want to overdo it. Linda has a great feel for getting it just right.
