The QM Scrap Squad is making scrappy versions of Spinout from page 46 of the July/August issue of Quiltmaker. Spinout was designed by Barbara Cline. Here’s the original Spinout in Art Gallery Fabrics:
Today’s featured Scrap Squad member is Carol Vickers from Ohio.

Carol did a baby version of soft pastels.
She chose an alternate method to piece her Spinout rather than use the paper foundation method. You might really like this option. Here is what Carol wrote as she sewed:
I “cheated”…I like paper piecing but not the paper removal. I felt with just two pieces in each section, I could find an easier way.
So I sewed 6″ x 3-1/2″ rectangles together in the appropriate colors and then used the paper shape as a template.
Align the seamline on the paper template with the seamline of the rectangles.
Use a ruler and rotary cutter on a cutting mat to cut around the paper template.
I wasn’t sure I could line them up well enough but they are coming out great.
Each spinner is a different fabric: two yellow, two lavender, two light blue, two light green, two pink and two peach. All these pastels are in the nursery fabric I will use for the backing and border.
I am about half way through piecing the spinners and I’m putting the rows together as I go. I like how it’s coming out but…it takes a lot of care to get the right two colors together in the right position.
Later Carol sent photos of the finished quilt. Won’t a baby in her life just love this?
I think the addition of the brighter orange really boosts the quilt’s interest level. Pastels can be tricky like that—nobody wants to be the “loudmouth” but the group really needs one! The tiny little squares in the first border are fun, too.

Carol made this quilt from a panel which was in a huge box of fabric she bought at a garage sale!
The third quilt was donated to Birthright at Carol’s church. Birthright is a group that supports young mothers who need a little help providing for their new babies.
Pretty impressive, I’d say.

Those are just fabulous looking quilts. I may have to look for the magazine. Can I get it at the bookstore? Or do I have to get a subscription. Even the alternative method looks difficult to me.

I think the fabric requirements in the pattern should be sufficient. The 6″ x 3-1/2″ rectangles aren’t much bigger than the pieces you would use doing the paper piecing method so it should all work. Mine, of course was all scrappy so I used more fabrics than the original pattern but not much yardage of each. Good luck with your quilt; I’d love to see pictures when you are finished!
