100 Blocks Volume 3: In the Bag

I can’t believe Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Vol. 3 is almost here! You will just LOVE the variety of blocks that appear in this issue. There are several that I want to make.

Many of you may remember my block from Volume 2:

QMMS 100054 STARCK 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 3: In the Bag

Shoe Boxes

And my blog post about my shoe collection (okay, shoe addiction) from last year’s blog tour. You all had so many wonderful suggestions about what type of shoe block I should make for Volume 3 that I couldn’t decide! So instead, I realized that I needed an accessory to go with my shoes. Who doesn’t love a cute little pocketbook to carry all of their essential items!? Check out my block for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Vol. 3:

QM STARCK 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 3: In the Bag

In the Bag

It goes together in a snap with one foundation, and my favorite part is the purse handle made using Ruffle Rac from Michael Miller Fabrics. It’s so cute, don’t you think?

So don’t you know, I just had to make a few more! Check out this quilt I’m working on using all Robert Kaufman Fabrics; it still gets a couple of borders, but I’m very excited about it.

pursequilt 300x300 100 Blocks Volume 3: In the Bag

I think I want one of each of these purses. I’m glad they aren’t too big – that will keep me from carrying too much stuff around! I’m always finding some random thing that somehow ends up in my purse—aren’t you?

What’s the most unusual thing in your purse right now?

Leave me a comment by Midnight MDT Tuesday, May 3rd, and I’ll draw a random winner to receive their very own copy of 100 Blocks Vol. 3.

Edit on 5/3/11: Thank you all so much for your fabulous comments. I had so much fun reading them all and hearing what you carry in your purses. I hope you enjoy the rest of the blog tour!

According to random.org, our winner is #160:

robin { 05.03.11 at 5:52 pm }

I have a brown swatch of leather that matches our couch in my purse.

Congratulations to Robin!

Love those purses, perfect together with the shoes! The most unusal thing in my purse just at the moment is a small roket from my youngest son.

  2. Colleen says:

There is nothing “too”unusual, but I do have my sons college graduation program in my purse from this weekends event! I am looking forward to the tour- I really enjoyed it last year – thank you!!

  3. Vickie E says:

I love that block! and the ruffle rack ;)

  4. Mary Jo Jones says:

I love your purses..what a perfect block for a shopper like me! I have a new “art piece” in my purse that is from my darling 3 year old grandson…he just made it for me!

  5. Thanks for hosting another “block party.” I love the 100 Blocks issues of Quiltmaker. I guess the most unusual item in my purse is the plastic toothpicks. I have braces. I now have to carry all kinds of items (toothbrush, toothpaste, wax, picks) to keep my teeth clean.

  7. Sherry says:

The most unusual thing I have in my purse are really neat plastic crab leg openers we got from a restaurant in Atlanta when we visited our daughter. I think the purses are great I have a 7 year old granddaughter who would love them.

  8. My Zentangle notebook and pen are the most unusual things in my handbag now. Sometimes I get ideas for quilting patterns doodling.

  9. Joan Amundsen says:

I really don’t carry anything unusual in my purse, just lots of necessary ‘things’. That is why my purse just has to be large. I love the
purse block and I am visioning a great wall hanging with this, the shoes and a few other things.

  10. Katie says:

Hmmm…I try to keep the unusual things out of my purse to keep it lighter, but I suppose the Benadryl anti-itch cream I carry for mosquito bites (I’m pretty allergic) might be considered unusual. To a non-quilter, the bits of fabric also might seem odd, but, well, I’m a quilter! Thanks for a chance to win!

  11. Darlene B says:

Apparently I’m pretty boring – I just have all the usual essentials. But I hope to win a copy of this magazine anyway!

  12. Nancy B from Many LA says:

    Love your block!
I always carry my Kindle with me!

  13. Dorian says:

What a cute block!! Hmm, lets see…the most unusual thing in my purse is a compass. One of the boys left it in the van, and it fell out when I got out of the van one day. So I picked it up, put it in my purse…and promptly forgot about it :)

  14. Lisa Marie says:

Adorable block! The most unusual thing in my purse is a tape measure. Maybe not unusual for a quilter, but perhaps for someone else. It often comes in handy!

  15. Becky Weimer says:

I carry a small flashlight in my purse. One time I was in a K-Mart store when a thunderstorm hit and knocked out the electricity. Could have used a flashlight to make my way out of the store; I carry one ever since!

  16. Karen Lee says:

Love this the purse block! Its so cute and so you. You are so creative. Most unusal thing in my purse – 2 separate wallets with different currencies in each. ie. Euros & Swiss Francs in one, Russian Rubles in the other. (My travel purse.)

  17. Peg Spradlin says:

I had to look in my purse to see what I could find that might be considered unusual (my mother-in-law says my purse is so heavy she can’t lift it, but I don’t think it’s that bad). I carry a rosary- I suppose that’s unusual. Your purse quilt is a wonderful companion to your shoes. Can’t wait to see what’s in volume 4.

  18. Barbara L says:

What a fun block! The shoes and purse blocks together would make a fun quilt. I don’t think I have anything too unusual in my purse…maybe my crest white strips?

  19. SewLindaAnn says:

Probably my roll of toilet paper. Not for that! I have allergies and blow my nose so much I need more than your average little packet!

  20. Mary Margaret says:

I have auto fuses in my purse, when I was driving school bus and something was always blowing a fuse, just haven’t taken them out since I retired. You never know.

  21. Carrie P. says:

Very cute block. Love the ruffle trim. I don’t know if it is unusual or not but I have dental floss in my purse.

Definitely a fashion theme going on here! Cute!

  23. Mary Kastner says:

Purses are so cute. Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy of the magazine. Mary

  24. christine says:

The most unusual thing I have in my purse is a polished rock my son, now 14, gave me after a field trip to Itasca State Park when he was in 4th grade. Unusual? ir Sentimental?
    Cute blocks: purses & shoes…. what’s next….hats???

  25. Jillquilts says:

Those bags are just too cute! I think that the most unusual thing in my bag right now is a pair of socks that I wore to work on Friday. I wear flip flops to walk to and from the office and you can’t wear socks with flip flops so when the workday is over, the socks come off, get folded up and stuck in my bag where I usually take them out. Friday I was in such a hurry to sew that I forgot. :(

Thanks for the chance to win!

  26. G. Anderson says:

Very very cute………..love it. I have several daughters and grandaughters that would also love it……Very spring and girly….Thanks for the chance to win the prize also………Georgeann (Butterfly George)

  29. Mary says:

The most unusal thing in my purse right now is the program from my son’s wedding this past Saturday. The most unusal thing I’ve ever found in my purse was on a Sunday morning in church a long time ago. I reached in and found a hamburger from McDonald’s that one of my kids wanted to save when we were on a shopping trip the day before.

  30. MarciaW says:

Purses and shoes … now you need a HAT for the next volume… Seriously, please enter me into the drawing too.

  31. kathy h says:

I love the purse block. That would be perfect to make for my girls as they are always wanting me to make new purses for them. The most unusual thing in my purse right now is a piece of fabric to match when i go to the quilt store.

  32. Marge in Louisiana says:

That is a really cute block. Right now my purse is actually empty except for one tissue. I keep wallet and keys in my pocket as there have been a lot of purse snatchings lately.

  33. Melissa Garcia says:

Love the blocks. One of my daughters is a real shoe and accessory girl. My mother made her a high heel quilt, maybe she can make her a purse quilt to match!! In my bag now are several tubes of chapstick. We need it all the time here and I always add one just in case I don’t have one handy.

There are five ink pens in my purse, I suppose now would be a good time to clean my purse out! Love your shoes and purse, or as my friends call them, pocket books.

  40. Janis says:

I love the purses and shoes blocks! I’ve been looking for something similiar to make new quilts for my 2 grandaughters. Love, love, love it!!!

  41. Lisa says:

Love the purse block and quilt…goes perfect with the shoes. Unusual item in my purse ? match box car from grandson??

  42. SarDee says:

I love it! Especially the ric-rac… it is so going on my list to make a throw with the purse block for my goddaughter! The most unusual thing in my purse is a flashlight, not a small one but a big honking maglight. Why? Because we are looking at forclosured and abandonded houses to renovate and most don’t have power. Thus the flashlight! :o )

  43. Carla says:

Love the purse and the shoes! Nothing unusual in my purse…lifesavers for my daughter with diabetes?

  48. Sandi P. says:

Ha, great question. Not much unusual right now, but the worst thing I ever found in my purse was a busted package of ranch dressing all over my wallet, keys, etc…. as I was grabbing those to switch purses on my way out the door for a wedding. YUK!

  49. Sally W says:

when you say unusual – are you talking about the tube of Sewline .9 mil green lead in my purse or the pack of betweens in my wallet…
    :)

  50. Pat Hersl says:

I’ve done a shoe quilt. Need to do the purses! They are perfect.

I love your purses (and I loved the shoes). I have way too much stuff in my purse, multiple pens, memory stick, RSA token for accessing work from home, but the most unusual (for a mother who’s youngest is 23 and who’s only grandchild is just 9 months old) is a regular digital oral fever thermometer. Picked it up off the table, needed a spot to dump it, and voila. I have been carrying it around since last winter’s December flu!

  63. Julie in WA says:

Cute block! Love the new Ruffle Rac…it fits the block perfectly! I prefer small purses, so there is not a whole lot in it….I guess the small container with braces wax for my daughter is the most unusual thing in there right now!

  64. Madeline says:

oh, I almost forgot to put the most unusual thing in my purse right now—must be the tire gauge. Or the poem written on a napkin years ago, that a customer wrote while we were having one of those chitchats that you do with business acquantainces. Someday if he gets famous, I will have it…..

  65. Mary C in KC says:

Thanks for sharing!! In my purse I have tapestry needles cause you never know when you need to sew a seam in a sweater. And I also have a beaded bracelet I’m knitting. I feel more secure having a sewing or a knitting project with me. You just never know where you can get stranded.

I am ready for almost anything.

  86. cindy says:

Nothing unusual on my purse right now…unless you count the tootsie blow pop! :)
    LOVE this block. LOVE.

  87. VickiT says:

OOh I LOVE that purse. It’s adorable and the ruffle rac handles are just awesome.
Oh gosh, the most unusual thing in my purse right now I doubt you’ll find in anyone else’s comments. I have the health history of all previous relatives I have been able to locate. I know that doesn’t sound too unusual possibly but, I was adopted and because of health problems I had to try to locate my birth family and I was extremely fortunate (lucky even) that I accomplished that task in just 4 days. The health history I have is from all I was able to get from my newly located birth family that my own doctor needed to have. Other than that, everything else is fairly normal I’d say, including my tape measure that I carry which I got from my Husqvarna store since it’s really a ‘sewing’ notion used quite often while shopping. Funny I got through years without having a tape measure in my purse yet since getting this one I have used it a lot. lol

  88. Maureen says:

I do love the shoe blocks but the purses are the cat’s pajamas! The only unusual thing in my purse is a pair of rubber gloves to ease up my hose.

  89. Mandy M says:

Oh My! That block is way too cute!
What might be the most unusual thing in my purse right now? Tea bags! I am always getting somewhere and all they have is coffee to drink and I don’t drink coffee. For me, it isn’t unusual at all :o )

  90. Robyn says:

I love the purses, the most unusual thing i have in mine is a “Dr Who Sonic Screwdriver ” ……… what’s that you say ? Dr Who is a British TV series I’ve watched since I was a child (I’m now in my late 40′s) My children (18 & 20 yo) & Iwatch it togeather now. The sonic screwdriver ( a humorous Xmas gift from my boys) is actually flashlight; but in the show it’s quite a magical tool that can fix anything

  91. Carol Sc says:

Not much in my purse that is unusual for quilters or sewers — most women don’t carry a seam ripper in their purse, but many of us do, along with small scissors and a measuring tape. I’m looking forward to seeing the next 100 block book.

  92. Kathleen B says:

Cute, cute, cute! KFC wet wipes. They really come in handy at times.

  93. I love your block. I make purses all the time and your block really appeals to me! Debbie in WV

My purse currently has 2 medals on ribbons that I was awarded Friday evening and Sunday morning at a Lions Clubs convention. Engraved, even!!!

  96. Sandy A says:

I just switched handbags, so there isn’t much in mine right now. There is this neat little band-aid dispenser that keeps you band-aids flat. Comes in handy when I stick myself with a pin or needle!

  97. Stitchin in MI says:

It’s not that unusual for a quilter, but it might be for others–a spool of thread to match the color of my daughter-in law’s bridesmaid dress. It needs to be shortened, and I’m elected. Oh, and a 2 GB thumb drive for carrying math tests I’m constructing between home and school. (It also contains a few projects from quilting sites!)

  98. Debbie says:

And I thought the shoes were cute. The purses are a great accessory. Now you need a hat, gloves or jewelry. Thanks for a fun block.

  99. Diana says:

What a whimsical design! Love the 3D embellishment on it. What’s unusual in my handbag? It’s probably a piece of fabric I’m been saving since last year. I’m hoping to find a coordinating fabric to go with it!

  100. Sue Schultz says:

I just got the purse Friday night (early Mothers Day present), so I haven’t had too much time to put anything unusual in it. I did go to a performance Friday night that was VERY unusual and have the ticket stub in my purse.

  101. JoAnne Murphy says:

Adorable block! Especially to go with the shoes. Now I’m thinking hat blocks… I try not to carry much in my purse but I always have Starbucks Via (instant coffee). All I need is hot water (or cold water or milk) and voila a good cup of coffee or latte.

  107. Carol C says:

Cute block. Congrats on being in the book. The most unusual thing in my purse is a tape measure. I was furniture shopping a couple of weeks ago.

  108. laura says:

Love the block. Can see it mixed with the shoe block from the previous edition of 100 Blocks. I have a pebble given to0 me 15 years ago from my son and a Chestnut.

  109. This is such a fun one, love it!
This is something my daughter would love, she is always asking me to make her more quilts.

    Debbie

  110. Karen A says:

Don’t have anything out of the ordinary , but if I’d had a ziplock bag with me I would have picked up the empty robin’s egg shell that I found in my mother’s yard today.

  111. Kaye M. says:

Love the ruffle rac handles on your block! The most unusual thing in my purse is my favorite brand of coffee creamer!

  116. Claudia says:

PS. The most unusual thing about my purse (rather than in it) is that I made it myself!

  117. Debbie says:

So nice to have a pocketbook to go with the shoes, Denise! I don’t think that anything in my purse is particularly unusual. Maybe I should go put something strange in? :)

  118. Carol says:

  122. Evelene Sterling says:

Oh purses-my 6 year-old granddaughter loves purses as much as I do. I saved some fortune cookie fortunes in my purse.

Great purse! I don’t have anything unusual in my purse, but in my bag that I carry my purse around in I have a spare pair of swim goggles…..

Love both blocks! Can’t wait to get the magazine. My most unusual thing would have to be a measuring tape keychain. Doesn’t seem unusual for us, but for someone else it would be :)

The strangest thing in my purse right now is my sister-in-law’s camera….I keep forgetting to give it back to her after she lent it to me a week ago….evidently she doesn’t miss it either!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

I’ve just left my winter residence where I quilted all winter with a group of about 20 women. We shared SO many purse/bag patterns! They’ll just love this quilt square and it does go so well with the shoes block which I loved! In my purse, the most unusual thing would be a CD of love songs my niece handed out as favors at her wedding….and I haven’t emptied it out yet! Must go listen!

Great choice on fabrics, and my purse has sand dollars from the beach in it right now which means there’s sand in everything now and it needs to be cleaned out.

  144. Paula Young says:

I especially love your shoe blocks. My youngest daughter is a self-proclaimed “shoe whore” so I can see a wall-hanging for her in the future!! The most unusual thing in my purse right now would have to be a pair of socks in a bag I just exchanged for a npair the right size. Not too exciting!!

The most unusual thing in my purse is a box of Harmony Balls (chime balls). They were an early Mother’s Day gift from my daughter so I could play with them at work and keep my hands more nimble. I bring them home to play with while looking at my stash and planning great things.

For me, it’s the very small, travel-size can of Lysol spray. Originally meant for the car but it never left my purse. And yes, I have used it out in public a few times. Mostly when shopping and someone (not me or hubby) passed particularly bad gas in the grocery store. Someone mentioned a small knife and I remembered I also have a tiny box cutter that I thought was cute and purchased it. It too, has never left my purse.

  163. Vivian Harris says:

Like your fashion statement quilt ideas(shoes and purse)what’s next for the quilt? In my small purse are several fabric pieces to match thread and a long shopping list of quilting supplies for the next shopping trip. The 100 Quilt Blocks series is not available where I live, WISH IT WAS, I would buy all three. Thanx

  164. MaryBeth Little says:

Hmmm, unusual item in my purse?? Does a diaper count? I don’t have any bitty ones, but I watched my grands last week and still have a diaper, LOL.

  165. Most unusual item in my purse? MONEY! *grin* Going to take a peek and see what weird thing is hanging out in there now. My daughter is only 4 months…so if there is anything that doesn’t belong, it’s MY fault, not hers :o ) LOVE the handbag & the shoes! I’m going to make a lap quilt for my fashionista cousin using these 2 blocks! She will LOVE it! Thank you!!!

  166. Lori says:
