As you get to know me, one thing you soon learn is that I have a thing for shoes. It’s all my mother’s fault, of course! As a young girl, I desperately wanted a pair of black and white saddle shoes.

I saved my allowance until I had enough to buy them. Oh joy! I wore them until they were literally falling apart. My mother finally threw them away while I was at school one day. I was devastated and threw a royal tantrum threatening to throw away a pair of her shoes in retaliation. Ever since I’ve had a penchant for shoes – not necessarily high-end shoes (you can’t have as many if you spend a fortune!), but lots of different shoes. It’s all my mother’s fault and that’s the story I’m sticking with!
So naturally for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Vol. 2, I had to design a shoe block.

Shoe Boxes by Denise Starck
I thought they looked like shoes stacked in shoe boxes, thus the name. These shoes will never pinch your toes and come in the perfect color to match your outfit.
I’m already thinking about my block for Volume 3 – what kind of shoes should I make this time? Leave me a comment by 10am MST Friday, November 12th, and I’ll draw a random winner to receive a copy of 100 Blocks Vol. 2.
From Denise: Thanks to everyone for all of the wonderful comments and suggestions! A random winner has been selected and notified by email – but guess what? I’ve also selected two additional winners JUST BECAUSE! We just love to give things away here at the blog tour! Check out the list of all of the blog tour winners.

I love this block! So much fun!
Boots!
I love flip flops!!
And I love mary janes
That’s SO CUTE!
I love flats
Why… Saddle shoes of course! I too always wanted them for school when I was younger! Thanks for the fun!
I love it, so cool.
Hate shopping for shoes! So I guess a pattern honoring worn out ones would be cute. My father-in-law always hung his black dress shoes in a tree when he was done with them. 20 year navy man – he probably polished them first
flip flops!
This block is adorable! I always wanted a pair of saddle shoes, but never got them. Aren’t they due to come back into fashion?
It’s a fun pattern, and I like the idea of flip flops a lot. But I think, more challenging, would be sneakers! With laces!!! I’d love to see that, I could totally make a quilt of sneakers for my son, he’d love it! So, yeah, that’s a challenge!
maybe make a couple shoes, common little girl shoes, (4 different on each block)
A girl can never have enough shoes you know! Dancing shoes…prancing shoes… romancing shoes. The feet’s gotta have it. Cute block–I really love your imagination.
Crocs!
High top sneakers!
Big fluffly house slippers!
A girl can NEVER have too many shoes! Love your block
How about snow boots for a Christmas or winter quilt?
Of course, high top fashionable sneakers.
You have to do saddle shoes – for old times sake. My favorite brand in high school was Spaulding (sp) saddle shoes and had a new pair every September.
How about some slippers with a pom pom on the toe
Hiking Boots. I need a new pair !
I have 3 ideas: saddle shoes in both colors (remember?) in one block; since the 100 blocks seems to come out in fall how about boots in various forms of fall, think turkeyish boots, Santa boots, cowboy boots; and a contrast block of sparkly summer sandals & New Year high-heels.
Congratulations on your block being selected
My vote, of course, is for the black and white saddle shoes. I also wanted a pair but never got them. They would be really neat in all kinds of colors with the white.
I think flats for Christmas would be great. The older we get the less we want to wear heals :^)
Such a cute block. How about boots!
I think you should make some saddle shoes!
Cute block! How about clogs.
Cute block! How about those old Elton John platform shoes? Was it he who had the big huge heels with live fish in them?
Very cute shoe block, how about some tennis shoes.
Cute block, how about ballet slippers.
clogs
rainboots
Sneakers or flats! LOL. I am a sneaker wearing gal and wear nice flat shoes when I have to.
I love your block. I have a friend who loves shoes and we try and make her shoe blocks when we find new ones. Yours is great.
Love this block. A quilter can never have too many shoes!!
How about some sensible footwear like social workers need ?!?! LOL!
Your story brought me back to my corporate days when I had like 200 pairs of shoes. I’ve recently given away the last of them and just kept a couple of pairs of heels for special occasions. I used to love going thru the boxes and wiping them down, sounds silly now since I usually don’t put on anything except sneakers. Anyway, I’d love to see a pair of criss-crossed straps Mary Jane style. Thanks for the memories!
Love the shoes and so fun to do in all different fabrics and colors.
Debbie
Great block!!! Fun!!!
Great design. Love the floral pair.
It is a great block – my daughter loves shoes! I will not throw them out! Hightop converse would be cute!
I love the shoes – Dorothy’s ruby slippers would be cute!
I love the “blame my mom” reason for your fixation with shoes. Hmm — wonder why I have so many shoes? Can’t seem to bear throwing any away — even when they don’t fit!
I think Flip Flops would be a lot of fun to make. Imagine all the colors that could be used!
Pumps! High Strappy Dancing Shoes! Chucks! They would all be adorable!
Judy
Those shoes are perfect. Just perfect.
When my daughter was 10 years old she decided to run away from home rather than clean her room.
She packed her suitcase…stuffed animals and her cowboy boots. That’s all. So I’m thinking cowboy boots are the next block! blessings, marlene
Neat block. How about clogs? Those of us with fat feet love clogs.
This is a darling block. What fun to play with. Thank you. Take care and God bless, Cory
Great block. How about some flip-flops for next time? Thanks for the fun.
Cute story. I love hearing about the inspiration behind a creation.
I was giggling when I read about your saddle shoes. I HAD to wear them because I had feet problems. I totally hated those shoes and I think I’m the one that got rid of them. Too funny. My sister turned me onto CROCS and I love them, although I’d prefer to be barefoot – which isn’t so great in New England right now!
I adore flip flops…the ones with all different color straps-I have a dozen or more, different patterns and colors. Winter it’s clogs…anything for WIDE feet
Oh, I know the perfect little girl to make the SHOE QUILT for! My niece, at the grand old age of 2, absolutely LOVES shoes! And, being the dear Auntie that I am, I indulge her.
Please pick me! I promise to put the shoe pattern (and possibly others!
) to good use!
Cowboy boots! [Forgot to include that in my last post]
Hi! My vote would be for more fancy shoes!
I love your block, now I can have fancy shoes my feet can’t wear!!
Thanks for the giveaway!
Take care, Leslie
I’m a fan of flip flops..would look really cute!
fun story, but so mean! I like your pink fabric shoes. Where can i get a real pair like that?
How about some Birkenstock sandals? Thanks for the giveaway.
Why not make the black and white saddle shoes?
love the shoes they are adorable
Love the shoe block! How about some funky tennis shoes for volume 3!
I agree with others – flip flops! Since that is all I wear here in HI – you can never have to many different sets of flip flops!
Love your shoes! I can’t wear heels but love my sandals.
Oh, How proud I was of my Saddle Oxfords many years ago..Meant I was able to leave the Girl Scout Oxfords.
Well I’m from Hawaii, too & had the same idea, but we never call the FlipFlops – they are rubbah slippah!
I love the Red Shoes! This will make a great quilt. Thanks for the drawing.
Sandals!
Tennis shoes would be fun. Thanks for the great block!
Totally cool! Makes me smile!!
I love the saddleshoes. Had to wear them at the school I went to as part of our uniform. We tried switching them with the buckskin colored ones & the principal didn’t go for it. Saw new fabric in quilt shop yesterday, red/black/white, shoes .. gotta get me some!!!
Slippers!
How about Dorothy’s ruby red slippers from The Wizzard of Oz?
Saddle shoes, of course. They are back. I had a couple of pairs of navy and white ones when I was in elementary school but I really wanted a black and white or a red and white pair. Mum said I wasn’t old enough for black or red so I maybe purchasing a pair in one of those colours now that I am old enough.
I am not a fan of shopping for or wearing shoes unless I have to do so. I had a pair or two of saddle shoes, one was navy and white. Those were shoes I liked. They have to be comfortable. I’d vote for saddle shoes or slippers for the next block.
I go bare foot as much as possible. But I do love Flip Flops in the summer. Great block!
Any shoe pattern that is funky and fun. I had saddle shoes when I was in school. Also, my daughter, who was born in 1970, had a pair that she wore clear through the sole. Tried to get the resoled for her, but no luck. Tried to find another pair, but they were out of style by then. Thanks for all the wonderful patterns and ideas. I love Quiltmaker magazine.
I absolutely love this block! I have a girlfriend who is so into her heels…I see a lap quilt in her future with all kinds of wild colored shoes on it! Thanks for the inspiration!!
How about some pink Converse high tops?
I remember having ‘ saddle shoes’ and also’ penny loafers’. I have always had trouble finding shoes to fit (short wide feet like the rest of me now) but I loved high heels…. the higher the better (so I could be taller). I still love to look at the fancy stiletto shoes even though I can no longer wear them. That would be a great block then I could have my fancy shoes with out the discomfort they now cause, sort of like having your cake and eating it too ………. VBG.
I love the shoes! My sister is a shoe-aholic and this would be great to use in a quilt for her. Thanks!
I vote for stilettos! I can’t wear them anymore so why not enjoy a pair on a quilt block?!! This giveaway is soooo much fun….thanks!!!
How about some snow boots!
The perfect pattern for a shoeaholic friend of mine. I need to down size it into a coffee mug mat for her. Next shoe pattern might be saddle shoes.
I think you should do penny loafers. I vividly remember wanting a pair so I could put a penny in them. Thanks for such an adorable block!
How about Clogs?
mukluks would be different. my toes are cold today. Thank you so much for the chance to win.
You should make saddle shoes, of course! I, too, craved saddle shoes in my youth but had to wear Am. girl due to polio. When I got brown and white saddles, mode was black and white. When I got black and white, fashion was on to something else. Always behind the times!
I Love those Shoes! I’ve always wanted to do a quilt with a pair of every different kind of shoe I’ve ever worn! Saddles, Moccasins, High and Low Heels, Boots, Loafers, and every kind inbetween!!! Excellent choice of fabrics!!! Thank you for Sharing! I admit I am a Shoe-Aholic too!!!!
Saddle shoes, penny loafers, cowboy boots, red flats. I always had to have a pair of red shoes as a kid. They made me happy just to look at them.
how bout old timey shoes … lace ups and such !
Clogs!
Great block!!! I think that you should pay homage to your first favorite pair and make a saddle shoes block.
Slippers! Fluffy comfy slippers!
These are so cute.
Love the shoe blocks! How about the old fashioned button-up boots like they wore at the beginning of the 1900′s?
How about “Blue Suede Shoes”? (Can you tell I’m an oldtimer?)
Tennies.
These are so cute!! Has anyone done thongs? Perhaps you could have them next time.
These are so cute. I can see a cute shoe quilt in my shoe-aholic friend’s future!
So my fascination with shoes is my dad’s fault–who would have guessed? I would never have made the connection if you hadn’t told your story
You see, it was my dad who threw out my favorite pair of loafers–they had square toes and a cute buckle and were ever so comfortable. I’m still looking for a new pair 40+ years later LOL
Would love to see bowling shoes!!! Or big clown shoes!!
I’d say take a basic gym shoe (I love Converse) and then give it as many saturated, outrageously-printed colors as you can!
I say boots, too! I love your snazzy shoe block!
How about man’s dress shoes from the 50′s… you know, like the type from the opening segment of My Three Sons that used to sway back and forth to the music….uh-oh…I suddenly feel very old!
Have you seen the Dazzle shoes that are custom made in all sorts of designer fabrics? They look like Ked’s sneekers (or is it sneakers?). I think a block like that with a wide assortment of designer fabrics would look great – and think of the embellishments that can be used. Like your block. Please enter me into the giveaway.
Very cute block. Mary Janes !
I saw your shoes today early on facebook, they look great, perfect if you have teenagers or twin girls in your house, I don’t have girls in my home, it’s just me, sooooo I’ll give it a try for sure, because I’m a shoe lover <3
Funky shoes! Looks like fun!
I love your block! I “collect” shoes too. How about ballerina shoes in all different colors?
Sandals would be good and this block is truly cute.
Haha! You actually wanted black and white saddle shoes. I was made to wear them and hated them.
i can hardly wait to get my copy. up here in the far frozen north of canada we dont have a close shop so most of my shopping is done on the internet. do love the preview of the blocks, bravo
Love the blocks. But I only wear Birkenstocks… no heels anymore. Thank you for the giveaway.
snuginmyden@yahoo.com
High top sneakers or hockey skates or fluffy bedroom slippers or moccasins. Or rubber boots. Or granny boots. Or work boots. It would be fun to do a whole quilt with all kinds of footwear!
I vote for saddle shoes, too. They were my mom’s favs to buy for us, but a pain in the neck to polish!
I vote for saddle shoes, too. They were my mom’s favs to buy for us, but a pain in the neck to polish!
Well, how about trying to make those saddle shoes, LOL!
How about the Converse All Star type shoes? My girls are really into them and they come in some really cool colors and styles.
I would have to go with tennis shoes. So comfy!
Adoreiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.Os sapatos estão maravilhosos.Que bom gosto.Eu estou fazendo uns saquinhos de sapatos e colocando os que eu tenho, mas estes teus estão divinos.Parabens!!

[Got it--there were spacing issues that google didn't like. Thanks Holly. "I loooooooved it. The shoes are wonderful. What good taste. I'm making some bags of shoes and putting what I have, but these are divine. Congratulations!"]
Bright color exercise shoes
Oh so cute! My friend would love a quilt made of shoe blocks. It’s on the to do list now!
I’ve been needing a pretty high-heeled shoe pattern for a quilt I want to finish up – it is a Sunbonnet Sue with Sues and Bonnets and I need to finish up my row of shoes, so thanks!!
I vote for saddle shoes or am I too late. I always wanted my mom to buy me saddle shoe like my sister had. I finally ended up wearing my sisters hand me down black & white saddle shoes which I wore till they were beat. It’s hard to find men’s saddle shoes but I did recently find a pair of women’s in mint shape.

I have to know how to make the handle of the purse. I always buy at least 2 copies of the 100 block mags because I only got one of the first one and my cat – Retention Pond – that is where I found him – spilled water on it – and I had to hunt and hunt by then to find a replacement. Now I just get a replacement to start with because they are WONDERFUL and great sources for block exchanges.
so cool
Hello there! Quick question that’s totally off
topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My blog looks weird when
viewing from my iphone 4. I’m trying to find a template or plugin that
might be able to resolve this issue. If you have any recommendations, please share.
Many thanks!
