I had known for a while last year that Theresa would be leaving our staff. (See my post Theresa “Graduates” from Quiltmaker.) That gave me some time to find a replacement. I got excited when I thought of a local graphic artist I knew who was also a quilter. But I didn’t know whether she’d give up her freelance business for a full-time job.
After several conversations about the position, I was thrilled that Denise Starck wanted to work at Quiltmaker. She worked alongside Theresa for a few days last year and has fit right in ever since.

Denise has served as President of Arapahoe County Quilters and on the board of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. She’s been quilting for 12 years and is just an all-around talented, organized and fun person! I’m so glad she’s on the Quiltmaker team.
You’ve already been using the how-to diagrams she’s created in our recent issues. One of her first design assignments was to create a design option for Carolyn’s Smooth Sailing in the May/June ’10 issue. We wanted a different image that would replace sailboats in the pieced Log Cabin block. Denise designed the rocket in the Up, Up and Away block (free pattern available for the block).
She’s been sewing quilts and color options—and has especially liked this year’s Flip Flop series. (See Flip Flop Flakes and Baskets.) She made the Flip Flop Sunflowers that will be out soon in July/August ’10 and she’s made the Flip Flop Pears quilt that will be in the September/October ’10 issue (sorry, no picture of that one yet!)

Flip Flop Sunflowers, coming in the July/August '10 issue
Welcome to Quiltmaker, Denise!

Love the reverse colors in the sunflower quilt, beautiful piece.

Hi Denise, I would like to order the same fabrics you used from Simple Pleasures for the mystery quilt. Would you be able to help me locate them?
Thanks!! Emilie Stone
Denise: I am having difficulty your Shoe Boxes (#127) block measurements. They just don’t seem to add up. Was there an adjustment to the pattern in 100 Blocks, Volume 2? Could you give me the actual size of the block before the sashing is added? Both height and width?
