Meet Rachel Griffith

One of the things I enjoy about Quilt Market is the opportunity to meet new designers. This past Quilt Market was no exception. I met several young designers who are just now making their mark in the quilt world. One of them was Rachel Griffith, and I asked her to be a guest blogger for us. We’ll be working more with Rachel in upcoming issues of Quiltmaker.

And, we’ll have another giveaway! Just leave a comment telling us how long you’ve been quilting and what your skill level is. You can also add the types of quilts you like to make. I’ll randomly draw one name next Tuesday, 11/24 around noon to win a fat quarter bundle from Riley Blake Designs.

Rachel Griffith

Rachel Griffith

Once upon a time…there was a 16 year old girl who loved home economics class. She learned all things domestic that a young girl should including how to make pillow turn baby blankets…she was instantly addicted. She made pillow turn blankets for years and knew that she needed something more…her one true domestic love.

“I think I’ll learn to quilt!!!” she said to herself in the middle of the fabric section of Wal-Mart. And that’s where her story started.

So here I am…that young girl, all grown up and I’m still in love with all things domestic. {except laundry of course…ewww.}
I guess yall could classify me as a multi-talented domestic diva. *kidding*
I’m pretty much your average stay at home momma, except I get to play with fabric in between changing diapers and picking up toys. And yes, I SO love my job. I began to make baby quilts, table runners & lap quilts for our house. Then I started making items for people when they needed them or when I needed a few extra bucks. Lately it seems as if the quilty part of my job has been branching out and I’ve added a few more things to my job requirement list.

I have been designing for the Moda Bake Shop, which in itself, is such a great gig. {It’s no big surprise that I am addicted to Moda Fabrics.} I think that it’s pretty safe to say that designing patterns & doing tutorials for the moda bake shop opened the flood gates for the designer within me.

I had the pleasure of attending International Quilt Market this past October and boy let me tell you…it was amazing. I met some of the most amazing quilty stars in the business and was inspired beyond belief. It definitely made me want to come home and design, design, design.

Basically, the quilty beast can’t be tamed, and my story will continue to write itself as I continue to branch out in the quilting world. I hope that yall will follow along with me as I share my quilty {& sometimes not so quilty} adventures over at my blog, p.s. i quilt.

I took a few years off, so now have re-started quilting. I am an “advanced beginner”, maybe? I’m game for anything except curves. They still scare me. LOL!

oh yay!! the first comment, I sure wish i was there to meet you!! congrats on all your achievements!!

Started quilting back in 1976, then went to work FT in 1980. Did not get back to quilting until 2005 after I retired. I love it, it is so relaxing and creative. I particularly like landscape quilts, florals, combinations of bright fabrics, wall hangings. Interesting that today’s blog is from Rachel Griffith. I found your contest on her blog! I enjoy reading her blog very much, I might add. Will be looking for her article in your magazine. Please enter my name in your next giveaway. I also sew for charity and those fabrics could be used for almost anything!

I have only been quilting about 5 years and I primarily do applique (needleturn). I have pieced quilts and given them as gifts, but I usually spend my time doing applique. I also love old-fashioned hand embroidery. I wouldn’t know how to rate myself but I can tackle almost anything at this point.

5 Lisa N { 11.17.09 at 9:36 am }

I’ve only been quilting for about 6 months, so I’m still new, but I have definitely caught the bug and now I can’t stop!
I love making all kinds of quilts, but my favorites are ones that I make with someone special in mind. Choosing fabrics and a pattern that I think will make someone smile and want to cuddle up with something that I’ve made is what quilting is all about to me:-)

6 D'Ann { 11.17.09 at 9:56 am }

I can not say I quilt. I attempt to quilt. I made my first quilt for my baby girl. She is now 28! Raising children and machine frustration kept me from sewing for 24 years. My oldest went to collage and I made her my 2nd quilt. I made my third quilt a year ago for my Daddy’s 93rd. Oh boy, did it turn out askew. I seem to be getting worse in my sewing ability. BUT I will persevere.

7 DianeY { 11.17.09 at 10:00 am }

I made some quilts years ago, but stopped & am ready to start again. My big goal is to teach myself free motion quilting. Thanks to the internet, there are so many tutorials & videos so I think it’s a realistic goal!

8 Cynthia { 11.17.09 at 10:03 am }

I’ve been quilting a few years….started when my oldest daughter was a baby & wanted to make a quilt for her. I’ve been sewing since I was in junior high (home economics class — it’s sad they no longer offer that class to kids). I’d say my skill level is probably around an intermediate.

9 Mary Flynn { 11.17.09 at 10:03 am }

I loved Home Economics classes and mom could never keep me in enough fabric. I had always made my own clothes and crafty items. In 1980’s I met a wonderful quilting friend and was so intrigued by her bits and pieces that soon I was quilting too. I quilt at least 4 days a week on something. I love it that much.

Congrats!

11 SewLindaAnn { 11.17.09 at 10:06 am }

Thanks for the piece on Rachel, I subscribe to her Blog and really enjoy it. I have been quilting/sewing for about 4 years. I still consider myself in the newish realm because I spend time doing so much else too. (needlework, etc.) I love focusing on an area at a time. Like right now it’s half sq. triangles and next is going to be colorplay. I am doing Blog BOM’s because I like sharing with people around the world while having my private sewing time. Thanks for the giveaway chance, I would so love to have some Riley Blake fabrics. I’ve seen them and they’re gorgeous!

12 Katie B { 11.17.09 at 10:06 am }

I love Rachel’s blog. I’ve just recently been bitten by the quilty beast. I’ve been quilting for less than a year, so I’m a beginner, but I’m really enjoying learning as I go!

13 Sarah Vee { 11.17.09 at 10:06 am }

Yay, you found Rachel! She is truly talented and inspiring and fun! Take the time to check out her blog – it’s worth it. I’ve been quilting for 12 years. I started with cardboard templates and hand piecing my patchwork blocks. Then moved really quickly to the rotary cutter and sewing machine! At first I mostly made wedding wallhangings for my cousins in collaboration with my sister. Since then I have made many purses, baby quilts, tablerunners, and just now into full size bed quilts. I have always made my own designs and am starting to think about putting that little ’shingle’ thing out in the big quilt world:) I have recently started to obsess over machine applique, button embellishment and rick rack. It’s been a fun ride so far!

14 Paula D { 11.17.09 at 10:08 am }

I’m 41, married, mom, and self taught quilter. I started quilting a little over a year ago when I made my daughter a high school graduation present–a quilt made out of all her tshirts, old dance team uniforms, and blue jeans she could no longer wear and couldn’t part with yet. That was all it took; I’m an addict now.

15 Sequana { 11.17.09 at 10:09 am }

I’ve been quilting now for almost six years; I’ll try anything. *S* When I think I have a fave technique, I find another to try, and then that’s my new fave.

16 annieofbluegables { 11.17.09 at 10:09 am }

I have been making quilts since my first baby was born. My MIL had some fabric she wanted to make into a quilt, but didn’t have the time, so she gave me her fabric and I designed a pieced and tied quilt. It was flannel, so it didn’t last as long as I might have wished. Then I got a whole cloth printed quilt and fudged, but I enjoyed tying. My first attempt at a pieced and hand quilted/tied quilt won the Sweepstakes prize at the county fair. I didn’t hang it on the wall, rather we have been enjoying it on the bed. Only recently I had to take out the outer frayed pieces and replace them. (When I purchased the fabric I had no idea how much and have a whole box left of that fabric.) Just recently, I have been studying online how to machine quilt. I have learned a LOT from the blog world. Last year I made a jeans rag quilt and used as many quilting motifs from my Quiltmaker magazines I could fit on that quilt. I think it turned out really beautiful, but I gave it to my daughter. I’m not done yet. It continues to be a happy road to travel. Thanks Quiltmaker for all your inspirations.

It’s hard to believe that it’s alrady been a good 10 years since I got into quilting – gosh I don’t feel like it’s been that long. Like Rachael I’m a mom of 3 kids under 5 years old and I often find time throughout the day to either spend time in the gated off dining room creating something or blog hopping – what I can “research” to learn something new ;)

I don’t know what my skill level would be considered as there are still many things I have left to try. ;) I love traditional pattern styles with all the new super easy and fast techniques.

My newest love is redwork – which I keep a small hoop and BOM project with me in the van. I get a lot done while waiting in the carpool line or drive thru at McDonalds. I love when I pull up and I’m the 4th or 5th car back -more time to stitch! ;)

Thanks for all the give aways!!! and I look forward to seeing Rachael in upcoming issues of Quiltmaker! ;)

Love from Texas! ~bonnie

18 Lisa England { 11.17.09 at 10:15 am }

I’ve been quilting around 10 years and would say I’m “advanced intermediate”. I love making lots of different types of quilts, and I am way too addicted to fabric!

19 Angela { 11.17.09 at 10:17 am }

I’ve been quilting for a little less than one year, and consider myself fairly advanced at this point. I love my new hobby!

20 Jane { 11.17.09 at 10:22 am }

I started quilting in 1979, with cardboard templates and all the accoutrements. I guess I am intermediate but there is lots I still want to learn. I love the fabric, colours, texture and patterns. I have been reading Quiltmaker since the 1980’s and subscibe to it.

21 Cyndie Holbrook { 11.17.09 at 10:24 am }

I started quilting (self taught) when expecting my first grandchild. That was 6 years ago. It has become my passion and joy beyond reason! I feel I can’t die until I have made one block of every pattern or technique! My favorite quilt type is baby quilts, I have made more of them than I can shake a stick at, I already have 19 great neices and nephews and four grandkids! I head up a quilt ministry for charity and will start working at a quilt shop this week! Yea!

22 arlette { 11.17.09 at 10:27 am }

I always loved to see quilts, but never tried before, I’m a quilter since last year 2008, sometimes it’s hard because we don’t have enough quilting supplies, I’m attending quilting lessons, my teacher’s a sweetheart and I adore my classes!, thank you for the chance!

23 Moneik Stephens { 11.17.09 at 10:28 am }

I started sewing in 4-H at age 8, now 21 year later I still love to sew. About 11 years ago in college I started making and designing quilts for friends to make extra money. Now I make lots of gifts and still do some quilting for others. I really enjoy quilting as it is so relaxing to me. I worked at a quilt shop for a year and a half and loved it, too bad it closed. Now I work at a sewing center and really enjoy still being involved in the quilting industry.

24 Candace Hudgens { 11.17.09 at 10:45 am }

I LOVE Rachel from p.s. I quilt!!! Hers is one of my favorite blogs to follow! you are adding a wonderful person to you blog! I have been quilting for a little over a year now and so far I like to do anything and everything I can!!! I just got a pattern for a quilt with some embroidery on it so I will be learning that next!

~Candace

25 Zohary Ross { 11.17.09 at 10:56 am }

OMG, I totally love Rachel and her blog! I’m a total newbie, I had been wanting to try my hand at quilting but only took a lesson a few months ago and am now hooked. I LOVE it and luckily my mother in law is an awesome quilter that’s been helping me along. So far I’ve been sticking to baby quilts and small things like wall hangings and runners but am trying to work my way up to bigger projects.

26 Jo Anne { 11.17.09 at 10:56 am }

Hi to Rachael from a fellow member of Pat Sloan’s group.
I have been quilting for about 5 years. I like to do both pieced and applque. I would say I am an intermediate quilter.

27 so we added chickens { 11.17.09 at 10:56 am }

i have been sewing off and on for a long time but have only recently come to enter the world of quilting – and yes, a child was the inspiration. I would still put myself in the beginner category, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to make an advanced quilt based on the mosaic floors found in St. Mark’s (Venice). Someday!

28 Ann D. { 11.17.09 at 11:00 am }

I started quilting in 2001 while on medical leave. Alex Anderson got me “hooked” and I’ve been at it ever since. I make one after another. One of my sons asked what I do with all of them!!!!!!!!!!I think I’m at an intermediate level at this point (I hope). When I began I did mostly applique, then paper piecing and year before last began piecing. I’m proud to say I won a ribbon at the quilt symposium this past June with a pieced quilt.

I love “quiltmaker” magazine.

29 Sherri { 11.17.09 at 11:07 am }

I was determined “not” to be a quilter…after all, my grandmother quilted…and I thought she was crazy cutting fabrics up just to sew them together. But she wisely offered to help me make a quilt for my oldest child when he was about 9…and then of course I had to make quilts for the other kids…and myself…and then I had to start decorating with quilts…and so it goes on! And now, because of blogging, I’ve been able to branch out with my quilting in ways I never dreamed of just a couple of years ago…including sewing quilts for Fig Tree & Co. for market…and even being asked to teach some classes at a quilt shop nearby! Thanks Grandma!!!

30 jaybird { 11.17.09 at 11:23 am }

once upon a time there was a quilter.. and she met another quilter… oh i guess i don’t have to tell you.. you know the story!! so glad we got to experience our first market together! {oh yeah.. me.. i’ve been quilting for 7ish years and i consider myself pretty darn good at it.}

31 Ellen Ban { 11.17.09 at 11:29 am }

Been quilting off and on for 10 years. Unfortunately don’t have much free time for it but hope to change that soon! I’d say I’m intermediate and trying to free myself from perfection tendencies…I’m definitely “advanced” when it comes to fabric stashing!!! I always enjoy Rachel, her blog and projects.

32 Vickie E { 11.17.09 at 11:35 am }

I’ve been quilting since I was 8. I found my very very first quilt this weekend..and I will be blogging that soon. Rachel and I also were able to spend our first quilt markets together! I hope we can spend many more!!

33 Dianne { 11.17.09 at 11:38 am }

So happy to find Rachel and visit her blog, as well. I made my first quilt in 1977 while waiting on my first child to be born. Then had a big space of time with no quilting while I worked and now after retirement, I’m back at in. I’ve made twin size quilts for my four grandchildren and queen size quilts for my two chldren and the next quilt I do will be for me. Still looking for the perfect pattern. I love piecing, but have taken all but one quilt to someone with a long-armed quilter to finish. I do the binding myself. I would classify myself as an intermediate quilter, I guess. I love visiting this blog and will be getting the new 100 blocks book!

34 ~Michelle~ { 11.17.09 at 11:43 am }

I came over from Rachel’s blog…thanks for the giveaway. I’ve been quilting for about 2 years now, off & on as my free time allows… And I would still say I’m a beginner…maybe because I haven’t actually finished very many quilts!

35 Robyn { 11.17.09 at 11:43 am }

I have been quilting about 6 years now. I guess I would consider myself intermediate. It’s funny but it seems I’ve always quilted even though it’s only been a short time.

36 rafael's mum { 11.17.09 at 11:43 am }

Great to see Rachel featured! I am following her blog allready. I am just getting past the beginner stage and with each quilt I am trying to learn something new. i just started applique. I am sure that eventually I will get my likes and dislikes and find what I end up doing most. In the meantime it is great getting inspiration through blogs and trying new things!!

37 Emily { 11.17.09 at 11:45 am }

I’ve only been quilting for 6 months or so, and I love scrappy quilts made of small blocks.

38 Alice S { 11.17.09 at 11:46 am }

Rachel is one of my favorite quilt bloggers. I love everything she makes!

I’ve been quilting for about a year and a half. Patchwork is probably my favorite. Using pre-cuts is great too!

39 Heidi { 11.17.09 at 11:51 am }

I am very much the beginner quilter, but I am determined to improve my skills and try more advanced patterns. I love stacked coin quilts and scrappy quilts, and I adore applique.

40 Eleana Zeits { 11.17.09 at 11:55 am }

Hello, i’ve been quilting since my youngest of 3 was in kindergarten. I took an adult class offered by the city . I was hooked! This was 20 years ago, i want to say i’m not 100% advanced, because there is always something new to learn. I love moda fabrics as well as most people and love to try new patterns that pop up. I mostly give away my quilts, i have a soft spot for “oh, i love that one”! And then seeing them displayed in people’s home is the reward i get for giving them away! I share a blog with a few other quilters. I do tend to post more then the others :) I have been sewing since i was in Brownies, my first hand stitched piece. I love to HAND make THINGS!

41 Kim D. { 11.17.09 at 12:02 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 14 1/2 years and consider myself an intermediate/advanced quilter. My favorite is applique, but I’m a piecer also, love paper piecing, art quilts and I’ve been taking a class for hand applique. There’s always something to learn in quilting. Thanks for your generous giveaway.

42 CitricSugar { 11.17.09 at 12:05 pm }

I started my first quilt when I was about twelve and it was a huge disaster! But my grandma loved it anyway. :-) Now, twenty years and a rotary cutter later, I haven’t made as many quilts as I would like but I’d say I’m a really strong intermediate because I avoid things I’m scared of – free-motion, applique, and circles. I have a lot more practice in my future and I can’t wait until I’m a weak advanced quilter. :-)

43 Joscelyn { 11.17.09 at 12:07 pm }

lets see I’ve been quiting for about 6 years now. I’ve always loved and always wanted to learn how to quilt but never had the opportunity untill I met my now mother-in-law. Im slight more then a beginner. I still avoid anything round or curvy like the plague, but I can not look at a pattern and am able to see how it works with out reading it 5 million times.

44 Cindy { 11.17.09 at 12:07 pm }

I started quilting a few years ago. My skill level is somewhere between beginner to intermediate. I make baby quilts and donate most of them to Newborns in Need. Although soon I’m going to attempt a twin size quilt for my 3 year old son.

45 Nancy { 11.17.09 at 12:08 pm }

I am much better quilter in my mind than in reality…I used to quilt with my mom-I did the planning, piecing-she did the sewing-so I am pretty pathetic with out her! I am starting to try again-when I get some sit down time-how come the bigger they get-the more time consuming they can be? Kids, I mean!
Please enter me…I love Rachaels’s work and her blog!
~Nancy

46 Lori Kay { 11.17.09 at 12:09 pm }

Thanks for the fabric giveaway! I’ve been quilting for about six years. I’d say I’m an intermediate quilter with a lot to learn! I like to make improvisational-style quilts and scrap quilts.

47 Kelly O. { 11.17.09 at 12:16 pm }

I’m fairly new to quilting but I’m a quick learner–the web is an amazing way to learn to quilt! so many resources!
I am definately a beginner…
I love Denyse Schmidt’s quilting style!
Rachel is totally cool! I read her blog and just love her creativity!

48 Bonnie Hampton { 11.17.09 at 12:17 pm }

I have been quilting 6 or 7 years. I am a advanced beginner. Doll quilts are so much fun to make.

49 Colletta Miller { 11.17.09 at 12:18 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 2 years but I started sewing when I was 12. Wow, that’s 19 years ago! So far I’ve made only pieced quilts and a few round robins. I also have only hand-quilted but I did just get a new machine and free-motion foot. Can’t wait to try it.

Please enter me the drawing. I would LOVE to win!

50 Mary Beth Porch { 11.17.09 at 12:19 pm }

I am an “on again, off again” quilter. But, I am inspired by new fabrics!
I love Rachels blog!

51 kersten { 11.17.09 at 12:21 pm }

I started quilting this last spring and have competely fell in love with it. I am working on my first set of patterns right now and having so much fun with it!! Congrats to Rachel!

52 Catherine { 11.17.09 at 12:23 pm }

Thanks your for having such a generous giveaway! I have been quilting for over 20 years so my skill level I guess is fairly experienced but still learning al the time. I made my first quilt when I was 15 and I still have it. I like scrappy quilts mostly and I like to make it up as I go not really following a pattern although I might start off being inspired by one. Thanks for spotlighting Rachel, I have been following her blog for a couple of months now and she continues to inspire.

53 Meg in CT { 11.17.09 at 12:26 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 10 years now–I saw a book in the library by Roberta Horton on scrap quilts, and knew I had to make one. One has since become many more! However, as I challenge myself to try new things (machine quilting after 10 years of hand quilting, etc.), I’m always a beginner at something! I’m also beginning to think of myself as more of a modern quilter–I love the use of solids and brighter colors.
Thanks for spotlighting Rachel–I’ve followed her blog for some time, and am constantly inspired by her!

54 Anna { 11.17.09 at 12:27 pm }

Thanks for the giveaway! I’m a beginning quilter, I made my first quilt this May and have only completed my second quilt as of yesterday. I hope I can learn from my mistakes!

55 Susie { 11.17.09 at 12:31 pm }

I’ve been a quilter for about 6yrs. I don’t get to do it as much as I’d like. I work full-time, raise a family and go to school full-time. *sigh*

My fav quilts to do are patchworks/samplers. I’ve really evolved in my fabric tastes. I’ve moved from the “bright cheery” to the “Civil War” and reproduction fabrics.

56 Katie { 11.17.09 at 12:34 pm }

I’m pretty much a self-taught quilter who started in 2005 in a manner similar to Rachel herself. One day, I said to myself – I want to quilt, went out, bought a book and got to it! My skill level is “always improving” – does that work for a category?

57 Rachel { 11.17.09 at 12:38 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 10 years, but started taking a course here and there about 5 years ago. I guess my skills are mid-range. I’m always willing to try new things… but always afraid they won’t turn out well.

58 amylouwho { 11.17.09 at 12:40 pm }

You’ve definitely moved your way on up from the Wal-Mart fabric department! Can’t wait to see what else your are sewing up to share with us!

59 amylouwho { 11.17.09 at 12:41 pm }

Oh yes, and I’ve made quilts off and on since high school. When my mom is around I’d say I’m advanced, when I’m on my own, well…. more like advanced beginner. ;)

60 Rebecca Clarke { 11.17.09 at 12:45 pm }

I love to make quilts, other crafts may call but I always come back to quilts. I have been making for about 15 years with a big break in the middle, about 7 years. I would say I am intermediate and I love making strip quilts. I have only ever made one quilt with curves and I am not very good at making up my own design but excellent at following a pattern.

61 Elaine { 11.17.09 at 12:48 pm }

I have been quilting for several years and love it. I would consider myself advanced…until I try something new! I am totally addicted to fabric and fibers, love it bunches. Thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway, Elaine

62 Jennie { 11.17.09 at 12:50 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about eight years now, off and on, I started when a lady at church held a quilting class when I was in high school, I went to the class and quickly decided I didn’t like the way she was doing things, and went on to finish the quilt on my own (I’d been sewing since I was about six). I’ve become much more diligent in the last year, now that I no longer work full-time. I’d say my skill is somewhere in the intermediate, I could always learn a lot more, but I’ve come pretty far in the past year too. My favorite things to quilt are purses, I love the way they feel and getting to take them everywhere.

63 Jewel { 11.17.09 at 12:53 pm }

We love you Rachel! When I came into the blog world your’s was one of the first I started following… I love your fresh approach!

64 Chris { 11.17.09 at 12:55 pm }

I am also an advanced beginner. I learned 8 years ago but then took a 6 year break! I have picked it back up this year and cannot believe the varied and wonderful quilters ONLINE who contribute amazing tutorials, projects and stories to our online community. Thanks for featuring one of my faves ;-)

65 Karen { 11.17.09 at 12:59 pm }

I would love to get in on this drawing. I have been quilting for over 20 years probably closer to 30 at that. I taught myself, I have never had a class. I hand piece, hand applique, hand quilt, sometimes machine piece. I am advanced skill with my hands but not so advanced when it comes to a sewing machine!

66 Jo Anna { 11.17.09 at 1:01 pm }

I’ve been quilting for 22 years off and on, but am still mostly beginner as I have not really worked on learning new techniques. I am starting to now though! Trying to learn machine quilting.

67 Kris S { 11.17.09 at 1:02 pm }

I have been quilting for about 10 years and i think I am an intermediate. Everytime I start a new project my goal is to try one new skill or technique. I love hand applique and paper piecing.

68 Eileen { 11.17.09 at 1:04 pm }

I’ve been quilting for more than 15 years, officially. I think I’ve known how to sew for about 100 years though. That’s the great thing about moms who sew … whether they mean to or not, they pass it on. I’m doing my best to be patient with my daughter because she really wants to learn to quilt … That’s my skill level now, teacher (not necessarily a good one, but one nonetheless).

69 Tricia T. { 11.17.09 at 1:04 pm }

I think I’m a lazy quilter of average ability. :-) I love to make small things… lap quilts, table runners, etc., because I can quilt them myself without much trouble. I don’t do hard patterns because they look like too much work. :-P

70 heidi f { 11.17.09 at 1:05 pm }

I have sewn for quit some time – but I just started quilting this past year. I am hooked.. I wish I had started long long ago.

I’ve been quilting for 2.5 years. It’s not a big craft in Australia, but it’s gaining popularity more and more, probably because people see quilts over the internet and get enthused… just like me.

I do machine quilting primarily, mainly scrappy type improv quilts.

72 Norma { 11.17.09 at 1:08 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 4 years now. I would say my skill level is intermediate.

73 Jenny { 11.17.09 at 1:08 pm }

I have been sewing for about 17 years. I would say my quilt level is moderate. I love making log cabin quilts…i want to move more toward the liberated quilting like Gwen Marsten. Thanks for a chance at some great fabrics!

74 Jonelle { 11.17.09 at 1:10 pm }

I’ve been quilting for over 30 years. I would hesitate to say what my skill level is, it should be advanced by now! But it is at least low advanced I guess!

75 Emily C { 11.17.09 at 1:11 pm }

I have sewn since I was 8, made all my prom dresses, lots of clothing, baby things…always loved quilts and everything about them. Made lots of tied baby blankets , but 2 years ago decided that my kids were old enough and I had the time to devote to quilting. Jumped whole heartedly in–Haven’t looked back! Still so much I need/want to learn…So many ideas, so little time!

76 Marianne Ogg { 11.17.09 at 1:12 pm }

I love following Rachel’s blog! Its inspiring to me!

I started learning to sew when I was 3. My mom taught sewing lessons, and I wanted to be with the older girls so bad! So she set up an old (like wrought iron) Singer in a table she constructed just my height. I started by sewing without thread and on paper-straight lines. Little did she know, those threadless wonders would lead me to quilting! I have been a sewing addict ever since. I found out early on that inset sleeves were not my thing, but cutting fabric up and sewing it back together to make a quilt was. I love to paper piece and hand quilt. I’m not much for applique, but maybe its because I don’t have much training. Anyways, thanks for featuring Rachel! She’s awesome!

77 Judy { 11.17.09 at 1:14 pm }

Started my first quilt in ‘88. (UFO) Second attempt to quilt was the following year (UFO), my first finished quilt in ‘99 YEAH! Started to learn and quilt again (seriously) in 2007. The past 2 years have been wonderful, learning new techniques in classes and from books. I enjoy traveling to quilt shows and shopping at quilt stores on the road. I would say I am an intermediate quilter. Like reading quilt related blogs and seeing what inspires others.

78 Mary on Lake Pulaski { 11.17.09 at 1:15 pm }

I have been quilting for around 35 years. In the middle part when I as a single mom commuting to a full time job, not much was finished, but I was always working on something. I don’t know how to rate my level, I try anything and everything that I like!!

79 Jane { 11.17.09 at 1:20 pm }

I have been quiling for over 25 years and still I would call myself a beginner as I am always learning new things!

80 cabesh { 11.17.09 at 1:20 pm }

I am a beginner quilter, quilting for three years. You’d think I’d have advanced from beginner, but with three small children I’ve only been able to complete 2 quilts. #3 is ready to be quilted and I’m cutting for #4.

81 Rachel { 11.17.09 at 1:21 pm }

I started quilting when I was just a little girl. My grandma would let me help tie her comfort tops and I started sewing small scraps together to make quilts for my Barbie! I didn’t really get bitten by the bug until last year when I discovered the designer world of fabrics! Now I can’t get enough.

82 Diane { 11.17.09 at 1:21 pm }

Love, love, love quilting! I’ve probably been quilting for about the last 20 years with a period of upheaval in my life where I didn’t do much of any handwork for about 5 years. Now I’m back at it and loving it more than ever! :)

I do some as baby gifts and others for myself. Love the traditional pieced patterns but recently discovered Sindy Rodenmayer’s site with great applique patterns that I adore. They are so whimsical and fun. http://WWW.FatCatPatterns.com In fact I just finished a swap on her site of wild, bright tropical fish that will be so much fun to work on this winter. I guess my skill level is intermediate.

Thanks for the link to Rachel’s blog. I really enjoyed her designs and would love to win a giveaway!

83 Nancyz { 11.17.09 at 1:24 pm }

I have been quilting for over 20 years. I have a home-based custom longarm business for approximately 10 years.

84 sara { 11.17.09 at 1:28 pm }

I’m maybe a little past just starting out, but certainly no pro. I love doing it though.

85 Sue { 11.17.09 at 1:43 pm }

Hi I have been quilting for about 15years, took a class at TAFE (NSW Australia) and was hooked. I am currently doing a once a month group where we have made a stripy drunked path and I am making a Audrey and Maude”s (great aussie designers) Babbles a Christmas Tree quilt as Christmas presents. I am so glad you found Rachel I have been following her blog about 12 months and love what she does.

86 Michele { 11.17.09 at 1:44 pm }

I started quilting in 2007 and haven’t taken a breath since! I love it like you do!

87 Patty { 11.17.09 at 1:44 pm }

I’ve been quilting on and off for about thirty -years. I like to piece and applique and have just begun to machine quilt. Ilkie allkinds of quilts but haven’t ventured into the art quilt scene yet but would like to head there.

88 Mary Grace McNamara { 11.17.09 at 1:44 pm }

I’ve been sewing for about 30 years, but quilting for only about 25 :) so I’m still learning! I love something small that I can handle on my own machine, or even handquilt in a short time. The big ones scare me!

89 Fiona { 11.17.09 at 1:47 pm }

Around 10 years ago I took my children to a church playgroup. After a few weeks, I became friendly with a couple of the ladies there. As our friendship developed, I discovered that they were ‘quilters’.. Well my immediate reaction was ..’quilting, isn’t that for the blue rinse age group, really, get a life’. As fate would have it, I saw what my friends had ‘created’ , then went to a fabulous quilt shop and fell in LOVE with fabric. My quilting journey had begun. My children, now 11 and 13 still get a thrill with each new addition. Nothing is more beautiful than seeing them wrap themselves up in a homemade quilt. It has become a ‘comfort’ and joy to everyone.

90 Robin { 11.17.09 at 1:50 pm }

I’ve been attempting to quilt since I was 16. My mom helped me make a Queensize quilt for my bed- I used it for 14 years (until my hubby told me we needed something more manly)
I’m an off and on quilter that sticks to the basics (and paper piecing, I love paper piecing).

91 lisa { 11.17.09 at 1:57 pm }

I love Rachels’ blog and many of her projects!

I took sewing classs when I was in 6th grade. In 7th grade I decided I wanted to make a quilt like my mom did, and got started. My sewing teacher moved away, I lost my fabric, and that was the end of that.

Fast forward several years. The summer between my jr and sr year of college I wanted to spend some quality time with my mom, so she, two of her friends, and I piled into a car and off to the Western Washington Shop Hop 2005 we went. I had a blast and became so insired. I am still slowly working on the blocks from that hop between projects or when I need to piece something as a break from quilting pieces. I hav emade a good dozen or so quilts, mostly baby. I know I am no longer “novice” but I don’t feel very acomplished. I still hate triangles and like to do the beginer patterns. I do attempt some intermediates, but that takes a lot of pep-talk. =)

92 Molly { 11.17.09 at 1:57 pm }

Hello my name is Molly and I’ve been quilting since June!!!! I was thinking about making a quilt and I happened upon a quiltalong starting on a blog and just took off from there. My skill level is still pretty basic but I’m learning fast. I have a great group on internet quilting friends that help along each step of the way. I’d looooooove to win this bundle …. I’m starting a crazy nine patch and these sound perfect!

93 Sandy (Strlady) { 11.17.09 at 2:00 pm }

I started quilting 10 years ago with a haitus of about 3 years. I am so happy I have been re-inpsired this last year and dusted off my sewing machine. I would say I’m a lazy intermediate quilter, lazy since I just don’t want to do any thing that is too complex because I have too many quilts waiting to be made in my head to spend too much time on any one in particular. Yup, I’m lazy. Rachel is the bomb! Love her site and her creativity.

94 Jennifer D { 11.17.09 at 2:00 pm }

I started sewing barbie clothes when I was quite young but I would say I am a beginner when it comes to quilting. I have only made two full quilts and they were very simple. I am inspired by bright prints and saturated color. Blogs like P.S. I love you have opened up my creative world!

95 Tammy W. { 11.17.09 at 2:07 pm }

Thank you for the opportunity to win! I am of follower of Rachel’s and love her blog! I learned to sew in 4H about …well a long time ago! Have quilted seriously for about 3 yrs now and still consider myself a beginner…so much to learn!

96 Carolyn { 11.17.09 at 2:09 pm }

I learned to sew from my mother when I was a child and started quilting by taking a class when my son was almost 1. He’s 22 now! I’m an intermediate quilter…I love to piece and applique and I’ve been a longarm quilter for 8 years.

97 Rosa Robichaud { 11.17.09 at 2:13 pm }

I still feel like a beginner quilter although I HAVE completed all the blocks and triangles of a Dear Jane… now THAT’S quite the challenge! LOL

I love quilt samplers and scrappy quilts. I snooze BIG TIME when I have to make repetitive blocks… *zzzzzzz*

LOL

Pls add my name in your hat!

98 Sarah S { 11.17.09 at 2:21 pm }

There’s Rachel! Fun post! I’ve been quilting now for about a year and I’d say I’m still very much so a beginner! I can do free-motion though, so that’s a big step!

99 Courtepointe { 11.17.09 at 2:22 pm }

Great giveaway!
I have been quilting on and off for about 15 years, but only obsessively for the last three years. I would consider myself and advanced intermediate quilter, as I haven’t really entered fully into applique. I love to keep learning, and surfing peoples’ blogs is the most inspiring.

100 Jocelyn { 11.17.09 at 2:25 pm }

Oh how wonderful to meet the designers. I actually learned to quilt 25 years ago, but did it on and off through the years that my children were growing up. I would say that I am an intermediate level, although some patterns are still a challenge. But I still love to quilt mostly traditional quilts. Thanks for the giveaway!

101 Jacque. { 11.17.09 at 2:32 pm }

I’ve been following Rachel’s blog since late winter and I gotta say, she so inspires me! Love ya, Rache! I took 2 years of sewing in high school and have made many clothes (for myself, my family/friends, my sons) but I never did any quilting. Never even really thought about it. Until a friend gave me a quilt this past Christmas. Holy Schmoly…the bug bit me hard! I would have to say that I am an advanced beginner…haven’t done paper piecing or applique (though I know I could, as I took a class & did well at it). The online community of quilting is awesome and makes it all so much more fun!

102 Melinda { 11.17.09 at 2:35 pm }

I started quilting in the early 90’s while living in Australia and haven’t stopped yet. I consider myself a somewhat advanced quilter as I teach quilting at the LQS and have a longarm quilting business. I still have things to learn though and love to take classes.

103 Trisha { 11.17.09 at 2:40 pm }

I have been quilting for almost 15 years. I am an intermediate quilter and I love to try new quilting techniques. I would say I am a traditional quilter but I do love to admire the modern quilts we are seeing all over blogland.

104 paula { 11.17.09 at 2:43 pm }

I tried my hand at quilting in 1991 just before my first daughter was born….unfortunately she was three weeks early – before her due date – so that quilt project was packed away for…..hmmmm…18 years! I started quilting with a vengence when I discovered the Old Red Barn quilt a long and totally feel in love with this craft. I would consider myself a beginner quilter although I’ve been sewing and knitting and doing all other crafts for about 40 years. Thanks for a chance to win the Riley Blake fabrics – I LOVE this line!

105 Mandy { 11.17.09 at 2:46 pm }

I recently started quilting and I’d call myself an advanced beginner… I still have lots and lots to learn but so far things seem to work out!!!

I love a mix of modern and whimsy…. I don’t like the abstract so well but I do love all the modern fabrics in semi-traditional settings… like the Pattern Basket Designs and Rachel’s blog!!! I’ve been following her for months now and I get a lot of inspiration from her.

I also read the moda bakeshop blog a lot!!! and I create a lot of stuff from there!

106 Jessie { 11.17.09 at 3:09 pm }

I have been quilting for about 8yrs now. I’m not sure what my skill level is, what do you call someone who will try anyting but curves and doesn’t always have matching points? I am addicted to the bake shop and all the great moda precuts, and I love Rachel’s blog!

107 Carol { 11.17.09 at 3:16 pm }

I began quilting about 20 years ago. I would consider myself an intermediate quilter. It is my passion, although I don’t get to sew as much as I would like.

108 Susan Piluk { 11.17.09 at 3:19 pm }

I just started quilting this past July. In fact it was one of Rachel’s tutorials on Moda’s Bake Shop that made me finally jump in and try my hand at this craft that I’d been wanting to learn. In fact I left a comment on Rachels blog and she was kind enough to email me and give me several hints/suggestions for starting to quilt. Since then I’ve been busy quilting away. Thanks for sharing Rachel’s story with us.

109 Kristin Kimber { 11.17.09 at 3:22 pm }

I have been quilting for about a year so I am a beginner and I love everything about it. I have a full time job at night and love spending my days with my little girls. I don’t have a lot of time to quilt. I really wish I had more hours in a day to quilt more.

110 Jen { 11.17.09 at 3:30 pm }

I’ve been quilting about a year now. I consider myself a beginner but some friends say otherwise. I love it and find myself pretty much thinking about it all the time! I have2 little ones so of course never enough time to actually do all the thoughts that are constantly floating around in my head! I’m self taught through the web, blogs and some books. Rachel is a true inspiration and I’ve made several of her tutorials, LOVE THEM!

111 Lynda Green { 11.17.09 at 3:33 pm }

I was a recreational quilter for the past eight years, and have finally had the time to practice so many of the techniques learned through classes.

112 Sinta Renee { 11.17.09 at 3:37 pm }

I have been enjoying Rachel’s blog for a while now and her friends who joined her at quilt Market — they made it a lot of fun to follow, for us on the sidelines! I started quilting a few years ago when my kids were in high school… there is always something to learn and wonderful quilters to learn it from! People always have tips and ideas to share! I like do-able quilts. A traditional look- like being at grandma’s!

113 Lynn Osborne { 11.17.09 at 3:40 pm }

I’ve been quilting for a few years. I like how one of the commenters put it, “an advanced beginner.” I like symmetrical quilts, I like everything to match up left/right/top/bottoms. Thanks for the chance to win the fabric!

114 Kaye Prince { 11.17.09 at 3:43 pm }

I have been quilting for less than a year, but I must say (trying to not sound up on myself or anything here) I’ve really taken to it. I’ve yet to actually use a pattern and just work them out myself on graph paper (I sometimes don’t even make it to this step). I would love to win a fat quarter bundle – yes please!

And that is a lovely interview with Rachel – I read her blog!

115 DianeH { 11.17.09 at 3:46 pm }

I’ve been quilting off and on for about twenty years now. Skill level? Just really getting into it in the past couple of years finding great inspiration from the many new designers with blogs like Rachel. Thanks for a chance in your draw.

116 Lynne { 11.17.09 at 3:52 pm }

Quilting has consummed my Life since 1990. I love all forms of quilting. When I do not have time to sew as much as I would like to I make up for it by adding to the stash :-) I have learnt many techniques and am comfortable with any style. I have also come full circle and am now a repro quilter and am thoroughly enjoying the gentleness of hand applique with a modern bent of course ;-) For the last 10 years my husband has collected vintage sewing machines. He loves taking them apart and putting them back together again. You could say we make a great team. Would love an opportunity to win, thankyou

117 Kelly Todd { 11.17.09 at 3:53 pm }

I have been quilting for about 6 months now and LOVE it!! I have really enjoyed designing my own patterns and making modern quilts. Thanks for a chance at winning the fat quarter bundle!!! :)

118 Dortha { 11.17.09 at 3:54 pm }

I enjoy reading Rachel’s blog and seeing what she is sewing on.

119 Ange Moore { 11.17.09 at 3:57 pm }

I’ve been quilting for less than a year – have completed 3 1/2 quilt tops (only one of which has made it into a finished quilt). I have grand plans, I’m addicted to fabric and have infected several people at work. I’m yet to try sewing any triangular bits into my quilts so I’d consider myself an enthusiastic beginner!!

120 Ronda { 11.17.09 at 4:00 pm }

I have been a quilter about 5 years with a elemetary interest in quilting when my three boys were young. I am now a grandmother of 2 girls and it is awesome. I have really taken off in the last 3 years since my grandaughters came into my life.I considre myself to be intermediate level at best. I stumbled upon blogland about 1 year ago. and it is wonderful!!!! I have had so much fun learning abou the designers and making all the beautiful quilts. I visit Rachels site almost daily and bunnyhill designs daily. I dont have enough time to tell all I have learned from these ladies. Thanks so much for all you do.

121 Sheila Carita { 11.17.09 at 4:02 pm }

I made my first quilt in the summer of 2001 from a kit. I didn’t even have a quilting ruler or any special feet for my sewing machine. It was a lap sized log cabin quilt that I still use as a snuggle blanket on the couch.
I have made few smaller quits, table runners and wall hangings and one full sized quilt for my daughter before she went off to college. I have my son’s HUGE quilt pieced but still not sandwiched/quilted. And many more in my to-do pile..
I tend to go in fits and starts so I may get a lot done and then not look at the machine for 6 months.
I consider myself beginner, I still have to look at directions and figure stuff out!!

I LOVE Rachel and her blog!! Thanks for featuring her

SheilaC

122 Becky in Georgia { 11.17.09 at 4:16 pm }

I’ve been quilting about 8 years. I’ve loved quilts and the idea of quilting for over 30 years. My Mom loved quilts, but she passed away before I began quilting. Each quilt I make and give as a gift, I think of Mom and wish that one was hers. I’m probably an intermediate level quilter. I still refuse to sew Y seams :)

Thanks for a great blog!

123 Audrie { 11.17.09 at 4:32 pm }

I started sewing in my teens but stopped for some reason… picked it up about a year ago and started quilting… and just never stopped! My grandmother was a seamstress so my family thinks I must’ve inherited her love of sewing hehe I sew everyday and make all kinds of quilts and table runners.

124 Kerry { 11.17.09 at 4:35 pm }

My first quilt has 2002 stitched on it. Just as well it has, or I just wouldn’t have remembered that fact. I think I’m pretty good at it, I try to be a perfectionist at everything I do and I like to try new things to extend myself. I’m by no means the professional, just love doing it. And just keep finding more and more to do! Congratulations Rachel, have met you before through your blog!

125 Erynn { 11.17.09 at 4:39 pm }

I’ve been quilting for 15 years and I’m intermediate.

126 Darlis { 11.17.09 at 4:43 pm }

Have been quilting for 30 years. Mostly self taught, with classes along the way. Really like to do applique. Enjoy Rachel’s blog.

127 Laurie { 11.17.09 at 4:50 pm }

I have been quilting for about 10 years I do alright, there is never enough time between my full time job, kids and grandson living at home, I try to squeeze in as much as possible.

I have always loved quilts but I really had no interest in making them until a girl at work was talking about it so I bought a book figuring she and I would learn together. She never got started and I am still quilting 10 years later best thing I ever did. I will be quilting for the rest of my life I love it…if only I could find more time.

128 Carlie { 11.17.09 at 4:51 pm }

I follow Rachel and enjoy her blog. It is great to see the younger generation take off in the craft field. I have been quilting since before high school(about 40 years ago!) I sewed vinyl wallpaper samples together for my first pieced bedspread. I am a traditional quilter and love applique and piecing. I also love designing my own quilts. I guess I am an intermediate and then some quilter!

129 giselle { 11.17.09 at 4:58 pm }

I’m self/blog taught and just started quilting in July. I LOVE it and I can’t believe I’m also blogging about it! I’m addicted to fabric and love getting inspiration from all the amazing quilters online.

130 Barb { 11.17.09 at 5:02 pm }

Thanks for showcasing Rachel – it is great to get to know her better. I’ve been quilting for about 6 years and I’m probably an intermediate quilter. I have just started to branch off into making quilts without patterns and just playing with the fabric. I love modern quilts and fabrics.

131 Quiltluver-Karen { 11.17.09 at 5:09 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 5 years, and am an intermediate quilter. So far, I stick mostly with pieced patterns, and am starting to do some applique work.

132 Daniela { 11.17.09 at 5:11 pm }

I’ve been quilting for 6 years, which is really easy to remember since I started when I was pregnant with my youngest. I never finished that quilt due to my condition, BUT I loved it so much that as soon as my little guy was old enough I jumped right back in. I love trying different things and right now I’m on an applique kick.

133 Terry { 11.17.09 at 5:12 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about a year and I consider myself a beginner. I like simple quilts with simple patterns and simple quilting. Thanks for the giveaway! :0)

134 Nancy { 11.17.09 at 5:14 pm }

My Sister-in-law got me addicted 10 years ago. I like all kinds of quilts…. I would say I was an intermediate quilter although I do some things very well…

135 Ursula { 11.17.09 at 5:17 pm }

I’ve been quilting about 15 years or so. I just fell in love with the process and the fabrics. It’s so exciting watching the quilt come together. In school I hated Home Ec. I guess it was probably because of the awful projects you had to choose from. I don’t really have a favorite type of quilt other than just brightly colored. I have now become obsessed with white sashing…thank you Rachel :> I have made a couple of her Christmas table toppers, one of them using my first charm pack from Moda.
I love Rachel and her blog. Thank you for featuring her.

136 Jessica { 11.17.09 at 5:23 pm }

i just started quilting this summer…took my first class back in July…and i just can’t get enough….i’ve always loved everything crafty…but quilting is just amazing…

137 LeAnn { 11.17.09 at 5:33 pm }

I’ve just started quilting a year ago, and it’s great fun! I love the Riley Blake fabrics, and can’t wait to get out and buy some of the new ones! :)

138 Michelle { 11.17.09 at 5:37 pm }

I have been quilting for a few years now, self taught so I would considered myself an advanced newbie. It started with a fabric addiction, my husband do something with it (the fabulous fabrics) or I will throw it away so I started with sewing 10 inch squares together. Then along came jelly rolls and my life changed :) Lets not start with other Moda precuts….I could be here for awhile. I forget how I found her website but I bookmarked it immediately, partly because she has great designs but she also has fantastic taste in music!

139 Linda { 11.17.09 at 5:38 pm }

I have been sewing for 50 years (oh my. I hadn’t realized it was that long!) I made my first quilt about 20 years ago. But in the last five years, I have been sewing many more quilts since I have a dedicated room with a view to sew. I make fairly simple quilts but enjoy playing with the fabrics and colors. I would say I have moderate skills. I love reading quilting blogs for inspiration and for general education to improve my skills.

140 Andrea { 11.17.09 at 5:40 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 2 years now. I love to make modern style quilts, and love squares, rectangles, strips and circles. Solids appear to be my growing favourite type of quilt to make… I would say I am no longer a beginner, but not yet intermediate. I have so many plans, ideas and research , but the executing remains to be the difficulty.

141 Amie { 11.17.09 at 5:46 pm }

I have been an on again off again quilter for about 9 years. I make mostly small stuff like table runners and what not. I would say I am intermediate!! I love it though!

142 Carole { 11.17.09 at 5:58 pm }

I’ve been quilting since 2004 when a friend dragged me along on a shop hop and I became hooked. I am an intermediate quilter. I mostly do lap quilts for gifts.

143 heather { 11.17.09 at 6:17 pm }

I’ve been quilting for six months. The best six months of my life. I’ve finally found the ‘it’ I was missing.

144 Kayli Taylor { 11.17.09 at 6:21 pm }

I am an average skill quilter. I have done probably a dozen quilts, none for a while because I had little babies. I like to finish things really quickly to see what it looks like. I am known to not follow a pattern and make up my own stuff a lot. It suprisingly works out. I rarely win anything so I would really love to!

145 Rachel { 11.17.09 at 6:25 pm }

wow. That’s almost creepy!!! My name is Rachel, and I’m 17 and have been quilting since I was 16. That’s really weird! I’m in LOVE with everything domestic too! wow. I would say that I’m an intermidate. I can tell that I have definitly improved, but I still have a LONG way to go. :D

146 Marlene @ Sipiweske Quilt Designs { 11.17.09 at 6:25 pm }

I’ve been quilting since way before it was cool to be quilting! After all this time I would consider myself to be a fairly advanced quilter with the occasional hickup over to the unknown every so often. Love fabric, love design, love the creations!

147 Kellie { 11.17.09 at 6:37 pm }

I am a confident beginner that has been quilting for about a year. I love colorful, fun quilts. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

148 Jackie Davis { 11.17.09 at 6:45 pm }

I learned to sew in home ec in ‘85 or so. Then in 2004, pregnant with my first, I took a refresher sewing course. I had a passion to make T-shirt quilts! I cut the shirts, then we moved to Guatemala in Jan. 2006! In May ‘06, I joined a quilting group of other missionary mommas and helped with what they did. By late 2006, I made my first baby quilt and gave it to a friend. Not much in 2007 (baby #2), then started slowly back up in 2008 making my first pattern and sewing my first twin-size top after making two T-quilts. I’d say I am becoming intermediate on it as a whole, still not the best with binding. I want to learn it all and mostly learn the craft. Thank you for the giveaway and spotlighting Rachel.

I have been quilting for about 8 years, and would consider myself advanced.

150 Callipygian { 11.17.09 at 7:21 pm }

I made my first quilt almost three years ago. I’m a step above strict beginner — even though I’ve made about a dozen, I’ve just recently started doing actual quilting rather than tying, mostly stitch-in-the-ditch so far.

151 Jill M in OH { 11.17.09 at 7:23 pm }

I have been quilting for just under 3 years. I really threw myself into taking classes at a shop that I felt comfortable in and I would now consider myself to be an intermediate quilter. I love piecing and I love traditional quilt patterns.

152 DebbieKL { 11.17.09 at 7:24 pm }

I’m actually working on my first quilt. I hope to have it done for my son by xmas – yikes! I’ve been sewing for a couple years though.

153 Amanda A { 11.17.09 at 7:34 pm }

I’ve just been quilting for about two years now, and I seem to always tackle projects above my skill level! I would love to have more time to devote to quilting, hopefully as my little ones get older, I’ll have more time to improve. Thanks!

154 Karen McCaffrey { 11.17.09 at 7:37 pm }

I have been quilting for 13 years and love to do hand applique and pieced quilts of all kinds.

155 melissa { 11.17.09 at 7:38 pm }

I would just like to tell you guys, that my sister Rachel is one of the best quiltmakers out there.She made my Sophies first quilt and she still loves it. I love ya sister keep it up your great at what you do. And I am very proud of ya sister.

156 Lori French { 11.17.09 at 7:55 pm }

Quilting since 1977, so it’s been awhile. More than 100 under my belt, I’m sure, wish I had taken pictures of them all! I always have one or two quilts going. I quilt most everyday. I prefer to make creative, scrappy type quilts, nothing too planned. Most often queen size and of course baby quilts and lap quilts/throws all around. I primarily hand quilt. I will machine piece, depending on the purpose/recipient, but quite often hand piece, too. From all the shows I attend, I feel like hand quilting is becoming a lost art!

157 Debbie { 11.17.09 at 7:56 pm }

I love all those bright Riley Blake fabrics! I’ve been quilting for over 15 years now. I consider myself advanced or very experienced. I make all types of quilts, art quilts, traditional, etc., etc.

158 call me crazy { 11.17.09 at 7:59 pm }

I’ve been an off/on quilter for probably the last 20 years, but it became my main focus in the last 6 to 8. I want quilts for all the beds! :) ) LOL Loved reading abt Rachel.

159 Barbara { 11.17.09 at 8:01 pm }

I made my first quilt about 14 yrs ago, but didn’t pick up quilting again until about 5 yrs ago. The intervening years were spent sewing clothing. My quiltmaking is kinda sporadic, but I love designing new projects and collecting fabrics. Advanced beginner? maybe? I love applique, but seem to make more pieced quilts.

160 Charlene { 11.17.09 at 8:03 pm }

I am a self taught quilter and began doing so after my husband went back into the military (98). After two years I finally bought a sewing machine and started machine piecing and hand quilting. Most I have given away but I am working on some unfinished and new projects that I hope to keep for my own home! I would consider myself advanced quilter but there is a lot out there I havent tried!

161 CJ { 11.17.09 at 8:06 pm }

My mom was a seamstress so I was around fabric since I was very young. LOVED it, still do. Loved home-ec too. I think my first quilt was in 1985. What kind do I prefer??? Quick and cute and fairly easy, you know, so I can get on to the next new collection of fabric!!!

162 Annie { 11.17.09 at 8:07 pm }

I am a very new quilter…sewing bags and things for a while, but quilting is still a fun new challenge.

163 Virginia Hendricks { 11.17.09 at 8:17 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 10 years. I’m still beginner to intermediate because I don’t get to quilt as much as I would like. Plus I was self taught for the first 5 years.

164 Melanie { 11.17.09 at 8:18 pm }

I’m a beginner, only been quilting for… two months, but I have two quilts done, one quilt top done, and one in the works. Yes, I got hooked, fast!

165 Cryssy { 11.17.09 at 8:19 pm }

I’ve only been quilting for about a year so have not had enough experience yet to have a favorite. I do love straight lines though ;) !

166 Melody { 11.17.09 at 8:21 pm }

You are an inspiration! Way to go!

167 KarrieLyne { 11.17.09 at 8:21 pm }

Hello! I’ve been quilting for about 10 years but on and off. Ten years seems like a long time but with small children I wasn’t able to devote any true amount of time to it so I’d say I’m still an advanced beginner. Now that my kids are older, I’ve gotten to spend more time at the machine and loving it! Thanks for your inspiration!

168 Ann { 11.17.09 at 8:22 pm }

I have been sewing since I was a young girl when my mom made my clothes and matching outfits for my dolls. I started quilting in my early 20’s and haven’t stopped since so thats about 15 years. I would say that my skill level is intermediate but I continue to try new things to challenge myself.

169 Cecilia Young { 11.17.09 at 8:22 pm }

I have been quilting for about 2 years now and I am definitely hooked! I would say that I am an advanced beginner. I enjoy trying new techniques. Thanks for the giveaway.

170 Sara { 11.17.09 at 8:26 pm }

I’m 33 and have been quilting off and on since I was 12. I’m not as advanced as I’d like to be, but am happy with what I do. :)

171 Cindy Keery { 11.17.09 at 8:40 pm }

Hello,

I’ve been quilting for about 6 years or so. I’d say my skill level is beyond beginner. :)

Cindy

172 shalynn { 11.17.09 at 8:43 pm }

i’ve only been quilting for about a year and am on my 5 or 6th quilt. i LOVE IT! my skill level is probably just past beginner:)

173 lisap { 11.17.09 at 8:47 pm }

Been quilt making for a year, having spent the previous 35 years sewing everything else there is to sew, so skill level? let’s just say I bring alot to it, but have alot to learn. Want only to implement my own designs; too many at this point to ever do in this life!!

174 Melissa C { 11.17.09 at 8:54 pm }

I made my first quilt 12 years ago at the age of 20. I made the blocks for another quilt, and then didn’t touch it again till this year. Once I was guilted into finishing that quilt by my mom, I have made 2 more quilts this year and 6 runners to give as Christmas gifts. As for my skill level, a beginner that pushes my limits. I love to try new things and learn new techniques.

175 Rebecca { 11.17.09 at 9:15 pm }

hmmm… let’s see, been quilting for 20 years now! WOW, I can hardly believe that! I started when I was 19 :) I guess I would say I am fairly skilled, but certainly prefer some techniques over others! I am sort of leaning toward art quilting right now…

176 Megan Kay { 11.17.09 at 9:22 pm }

I have only just started quilting this year and I started by doing a Doll Quilt Swap over on flickr, and can you guess who I had to make my very first quilt for????? Yes you guessed it Rachel Griffith! It was very nerve-racking when I realised who she was and how much of an expert quilter she was, but I think it turned out ok, and I am pwering ahead, i just need to stop buying more fabric and start making more quilts!

177 Julie in WA { 11.17.09 at 9:26 pm }

I took my first quilt class in the early 90’s, but there were years I did very little. It would be fair to say I’ve put in 10 years of quilting in the last 18 years! Skill level? I like to piece, have not done applique or paper piecing (no real desire), nor have I designed quilts. But I am growing, for I did my first improv art quilt last month!

178 Marianne { 11.17.09 at 9:36 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 15 years. My skill level would be intermediate or experienced but I really have been enjoying modern quick quilts lately. I am also a longarmer. Thanks for the op to win a Riley Blake FQ bundle. I love her fabrics.

179 Deb { 11.17.09 at 9:41 pm }

my first two quilts were made almost 30 years ago…then I stopped until just a year or two ago when I started back collecting fabrics like crazy! I’d classify myself as beyond beginner but not all the way to intermediate yet. I like to make all kinds of quilts, esp log cabin as that was my first.

180 Pastor Paul Anthony Gonzalez { 11.17.09 at 9:50 pm }

I don’t quilt, but I sure love Rachel Griffith and her huband Shane. I have the awesome honor of being their pastor and also their friend! Rachel is so amazingly talented and I know that this is simply the beginning for her great quilt/pattern making career and business! Knowing the faith, talent and work ethic that Rachel has, you can bet she’ll be on top of the quilting world in no time at all! I encourage everyone to write down and remember the name RACHEL GRIFFITH – a rising star!

181 Cherie Wright { 11.17.09 at 9:54 pm }

I started quilting last May on a whim. I have always sewn for my two girls, but I never worked on anything that took more than a few hours to complete. Quilting teaches me patience and to learn to love a process, not just the end–isn’t that a great life lesson?!?!

182 Lavina Dee { 11.17.09 at 10:02 pm }

I am a pre-beginner, like a pre-schooler but with shears! I’ve completed a couple of baby quilts and I am binding my first twin size quilt. I am drawn to contemporary quilts.

183 Laura Tawney { 11.17.09 at 10:03 pm }

I love quilting, sewing, and all crafts. I’ve quilted for about the last 15 years and so wanted to be a Home Ec Major but never did go to college. I love all different forms of quilting but I’m especially drawn to art quilting and painting fabric right now and have just purchased a long arm quilting machine. Always something new to do and learn! That’s my motto “Keep on Learning”! I’ve been a fan of Rachel’s for some time – nice to see the interview.

Laura T

184 Sheila { 11.17.09 at 10:05 pm }

I have been quilting for 23 years. Sewing since 7th grade home ec. classes. I am an intermediate quilter.

185 lee { 11.17.09 at 10:17 pm }

I have been quilting since 1991. I have had a few breaks along the way of having kids and an international move. I would call myself an intermediate quilter although a beginner at some techniques. I love learning new things and going outside my usual comfort zone of strips and squares. Love seeing what Rachel is up to every day

186 Skippingdaisies { 11.17.09 at 10:25 pm }

I love Rachel’s blog and have been reading it for about 6 months, its nice to learn a bit about the quilting world. I did my first quilt this year and must say i could easily get addicted, however family life is getting in the way at the moment. So i guess you could call me a beginner….and i love reading all these great blogs for inspiration when i’m not cutting or sewing!!

187 PaulaK { 11.17.09 at 10:28 pm }

I learned to sew in 4-H and high school in the 60’s. I did a few tied quilts in the 80’s. I have done some fashion sewing of over the years but coming back to quilting has been like returning home after a long trip away. I have made four quilts this year – one for each of my grandkids for Christmas. They are machine straight line quilted. I am trying to get up the nerve to do some stipling! I enjoy Rachel and found the interview very interesting.

188 Dawn { 11.17.09 at 10:37 pm }

heart rachel!!

189 Janet { 11.17.09 at 11:08 pm }

I’ve been quilting for a few years now. Not a beginner but still not as advanced as I’d like. Patience and practice is my motto right now. I love the vintage look quilts.

190 Karen { 11.17.09 at 11:13 pm }

I taught myself how to sew when I was in middle school and made many of my own clothes. Later I made clothing and toys for my children, then began making quilts in the 80’s. I love making baby quilts and quilts for my home or for gifts. I am really into making quilts with the fabrics from the fresh modern designers! I love Rachel’g blog too! I’ve been reading it for a while and she is a great designer!

191 Bonnie { 11.17.09 at 11:20 pm }

I am a new quilter, two years ago I made my first top, it was a watercolor heart quilt from a pattern in a book, My mother hand quilted it for me, she also liked a design from the book, but she didn’t like the technique so I made her top. She never got to finish that quilt as she passed from cancer. My mother was the quilter in the family she made so many beautiful quilts and all were hand quilted. After she passed I had to learn how to do the finish work and her flower basket quilt went to my son, from his mother and grandmother. I then saw a quilt on Fons and Porter show and took notes and made that one too, I have also made a quilt for both step daughters this year, and I am now the quilter for a Charity Group which sends me Counted Cross Stitch squares and I make them into quilts and lap robes for a nursing home. This helps me to learn as I try to make two different style blocks for each quilt. I have 6 quilts ready to go for Christmas, along with 15 knitted lap robes, I just love my knitting machine. The World of Charity Stitchers also makes quilts for very sick children and they are looking for quilters. Bonnie

Marta

193 Zarina { 11.18.09 at 12:00 am }

I have been a follower of her blog for quite a while and enjoy it. For me, I have quilted since I was in school but stopped for a few years. I have started again late last year by purchasing a Janome 6500 which made my quilting so much faster. Now, I am planning to make more dyed fabric and hopefully print my own fabric so that will be my ‘new’ directions for the year 2010.

194 QuiltNut { 11.18.09 at 12:22 am }

Congrats Rachel!
i’m a medium to expert quilter. been quilting for 11yrs. i bought a longarm quilting machine 2yrs ago and started longarming professionally. my fav quilts are appliqué

195 Nova { 11.18.09 at 12:26 am }

Umm…definitely a beginner.

196 Eileen { 11.18.09 at 1:15 am }

I took a few quilting classes many years ago. I’m pretty much a beginner. I started making a few quilt tops, but never finished any of them. I’m so happy I recently found Rachel’s blog! I finished my first quilt from one of her tutorials! :)

197 Edige { 11.18.09 at 1:50 am }

I’m not a traditional quilter. I love making bags, pouches and such little things. …but I love beautiful fabrics!
In Hugary there isn’t any guilt shop and I usually only dreaming of really patchwork fabrics.
So, thank you for the great chance,
Edit from Hungary

198 Liz { 11.18.09 at 3:19 am }

I have been sewing since as long as I can remember, and I have been making quilt tops for around 15 years, but I have just recently started quilting my own quilts and I am loving it!

199 Shelly { 11.18.09 at 3:52 am }

I struggle with this dichotomy………even though I’m a forty-something, I love the hip, fresh and clean lines of the new “modern quilting” but am also drawn to the reclaimed, maverick, use what you got scrap quilty goodness…….we want it all, don’t we? Been quilting for a loooong time, now and love this virtual community!!

200 Brenda { 11.18.09 at 4:58 am }

I started quilting about 2 years ago. I have a quite a few ufo’s. My next thing to overcome is machine quilting. I have brought most of my quilts to long arm quilters. So I do have finished projects around my house and have made quilts as gifts.

201 Nancy { 11.18.09 at 5:07 am }

I have been quilting for 4 years….considering myself a beginner/intermdiate. I developed a rather deep love for fabric, have a few UFO’s, and have recently learned to do wool applique. My favorite quilts are traditional patterns. I have a long ways to go in learning how to do the actual quilting of larger quilts on my machine.

202 Sharon Griffith { 11.18.09 at 5:10 am }

Hi this is Sharon and I hale from TN. I love to do primitive, dolksy and some traditional….I have been doing it since I was twenty.. thanks for the give a way,

Sharon G

203 Susan { 11.18.09 at 5:32 am }

Hi! I’m a relative novice, since I’ve only been quilting about a year or so – off and on. I have a special needs child at home who I homeschool so my time is “pressed” (but not “ironed” :) At any rate, I’m relatively new to quilting – learning in bits and pieces (so to speak). As soon as I learned how to turn corners on the binding, the world of quilting opened up to me. Prior to that, I was just piecing and loving it, but didn’t really enter the fray (er, so to speak, again). Thanks to lots of books, I was able to literally and figuratively turn a corner and my next big step will be when I can machine quilt with confidence. Still not there yet. I can stitch in the ditch, but I’m a bit afraid to step off that path into the great unknown of stitching patterns or squiggles or … anything. As far as what I type of quilts I like to make? Ummmm… whatever I haven’t quilted yet. Once I try one thing, I’ve done it, and I want to try something else. My last quilt was a lap quilt for my daughter with a stacked coin design. I think my next endeavor will be a zig zag quilt for her bed – with Heather Bailey’s mermaid design – the zig zags should accentuate the flow and movement of the ocean and underwater life.

204 mjb { 11.18.09 at 5:54 am }

I’m a pretty beginner quilter, but I’m getting close to my tenth quilt this year. I like traditional styles that can be interpreted in modern ways.

205 Edith { 11.18.09 at 5:58 am }

I began piecing quilts 30 plus years ago. I love traditional quilts and I am passionate about embroidery on quilts. I consider myself a competant ‘piecer’ . After 30 years I hope I have learned a thing or two!

206 Deanna { 11.18.09 at 6:28 am }

I used to be in construction, but became a mom and had to make a choice. Came home. Discovered that I didn’t have to give up construction after all. I just build something different now: children and quilts!

207 LoriD { 11.18.09 at 6:41 am }

It’s so wonderful to see younger people taking up quilting!
My first quilt was a baby quilt for my daughter who is now 26! How can I never tire of quilting after 25 years? I get more passionate as the days go by.

208 carriegel { 11.18.09 at 6:56 am }

I am a beginner quilter. I am working on my first quilt right now. I almost have it quilted and will next will learn how to bind a quilt. So far I am loving it.

209 Carol from Rock Hill, SC { 11.18.09 at 7:20 am }

My favorite type of quilt is applique. I prefer hand but do some machine quilting. I’ve been quilting for about 12 years and love every moment of it. I would say I’m between an intermediate and expert as far as skill sets go!

210 Darlene B { 11.18.09 at 7:20 am }

I learned how to quilt in high school back in the late ’70s. I didn’t do any more until I happened to see a quilting show on TV and saw rotary cutters and rulers and knew that the quilting world had changed! Now I quilt as often as I can and would consider myself to be an advanced quilter.

211 Michelle { 11.18.09 at 7:28 am }

I have been quilting on and off for 17 years. I would say that I am an intermediate quilter. I love to make baby and lap size quilts.

212 Deb { 11.18.09 at 7:48 am }

I started quilting in 2003. I saw a Saturday Sampler project a couple friends were working on and thought, “I learned how to sew in junior high, I can do that.”

213 niki { 11.18.09 at 7:57 am }

I started quilting in 2001 when my son was just born. I am an avid quilter and have been since then. I quilt mostly for charities and blanket bee donation sites. I only own a few and my kids (4 kids) own about 5 each. :) thanks for lettin’ me enter!

214 V and Co. { 11.18.09 at 8:03 am }

yay! we love rachel over here! i consider myself a self taught somewhat beginner quilter…but i have a quilt going in your other magazine quilts and more soon, so i guess i’m moving towards advance self taught beginner!
i like simple quilts. those seem the most elegant to me.

215 Wendi { 11.18.09 at 8:25 am }

I have been quilting for about 9 years now. I would consider myself an intermediate quilter. I mostly do pieced quilts but I would love to learn and do more applique quilts.

216 wendy { 11.18.09 at 8:25 am }

My grandma taught me to piece while in college and I dabbled with applique (which I love). I have only done basic piecing but am in the midst of a stacked coin throw (thanks to amandajean and moda bake shop). It will be my first venture into machine/free-motion quilting. Soo I am very much a beginner! It would be fabulous to win this–as the 24th is my birthday!!
Thanks,
Wendy
PS I love PS I Quilt–such beautiful, inspiring work!!

217 Annette { 11.18.09 at 8:28 am }

I have so enjoyed “meeting” Rachel through her p.s i quilt blog. cute stuff girl! The friendship bag has made it to many friends – thank you. Thank you Quiltmaker for featuring her.

So let’s see – how long have i been quilting???…. a quilt here and there over the last 20 years – mostly just patchwork ones. But over the last 5 years – with earnest. then a couple of years ago i stumbled upon some of those lovely australian designers that incorporate stitchery in their quilts…. I’m hooked :)

218 Renee E. { 11.18.09 at 8:31 am }

I am a newbie and I am totally hooked. I am doing small quilts right now and I love finishing something in just a few days. I am doing squares and triangles, but am up for a challenge and need to add some new fabric to my dwindling stash!

219 djaj { 11.18.09 at 8:37 am }

I don’t quilt but I think I will not wait too long to start…
(for now I’m just refraining myself to buy a fat quarter, to be honnest, too many things to do until Xmas…)

220 Ali { 11.18.09 at 8:47 am }

I have been quilting for 11 years now and consider myself an intermediate quilter. My favorite part of quilting is the cutting and piecing. I have yet to try my hand at free motion quilting but hope to try for the first time with a couple of small Christmas gifts.

221 sndy1 { 11.18.09 at 8:50 am }

I first started patchwork and quilting in the 60’s. Stopped for several years when my children were small and started up again about 10 years ago. It amazes me how much the craft has changed.

222 Debra in Ohio { 11.18.09 at 8:54 am }

I have been sewing and quilting since I was a little girly, sitting beside my great-grandma B, so almost 45 years! Oh, that sounds like a long time when you say that that way! But I still love it as much now as I did then! Thanks for the chance for the FQs.

223 Denise :) { 11.18.09 at 8:55 am }

Let’s see . . . I’ve been quilting for four years. I’m somewhere between beginner and intermediate; I’m mostly self-taught. I love all kinds of looks, but I think my favorite work is applique and hand quilting. :) And I didn’t think it would happen to me, but I’ve fallen in love with fabric! I welcome more fat quarters! :)

224 Shelly { 11.18.09 at 9:02 am }

I starting quilting a little over a year ago. I like quilts that I get done! HA!

225 Barb { 11.18.09 at 9:03 am }

I started quilting about eight years ago and am an intermediate quilter although if I see something harder I really like, I might tackle it with some help. I like traditional quilts but am just getting into the more modern improvisational quilting. Love all things quilty!

226 ♥Melissa♥ { 11.18.09 at 9:04 am }

I agree…MODA fabrics are addicting!!!

227 Jaylene { 11.18.09 at 9:08 am }

I have been quilting approx. 20 years. I would consider myself an intermediate quilter. Lately I have been branching out to more challenging techniques. I love everything quilting.

228 ♥Melissa♥ { 11.18.09 at 9:09 am }

I just started quilting, I am finishing my second one right now. I guess I’m a beginner!

229 Patty { 11.18.09 at 9:16 am }

I’ve been sewing since jr high school. I started quilting about 28 years ago when a quilt shop opened in a neighboring town and they were offering classes. I love going to quilt shows to see how others put colors together and the extra little touches they give their quilts.

230 lisa { 11.18.09 at 9:19 am }

I was taking my first quilting class the day the twin towers fell. We were given our instructions and we all left in a hurry to get home to our families. We all returned the following week with materials in red white and blue to start learning how to quilt. I always remember what I was doing and feeling that day when I look at that quilt. I love quilting.

231 Debby { 11.18.09 at 9:20 am }

I love Rachel’s blog and now I have found this one!

232 Allison S. { 11.18.09 at 9:25 am }

I started sewing almost two years ago, and just started learning to quilt last spring. I subscribe to Rachel’s blog on my RSS feeder, and I love it!

233 Lynn { 11.18.09 at 9:36 am }

I’ve been quilting on an off for about 20 years (more off than on) but I only consider myself a beginner, maybe an advanced beginner. I’m drawn to the more complicated and challenging quilts.

234 Jacque { 11.18.09 at 9:54 am }

I have been quilting for about 12 years.. I prefer traditional patterns in an intermediate range. I am drawn to applique and for the last 2 years have gone from handquilting to machine quilting. Am a NOVICE at free motion quilting.

235 Melanie { 11.18.09 at 9:56 am }

I am so pleased to see that PS I Quilt will be joining you. She is one of my favorites and she keeps me motivated to try all her designs. I have been quilting for about 7 years, what I know I have learned from my Grandmother. I would say I am between a beginner and intermediate. I haven’t done anything curved, scalloped as I am waiting for a pattern with clear directions to help me out. I love to do baby quilts and give them away to friends and family.

236 Heather { 11.18.09 at 9:56 am }

I have been quilting for about 8 years now. I first started when I got married, and I was hooked! I watched the movie “How to make an American Quilt” with Wynona Ryder, and I just decided that I HAD to learn to quilt. And it has been so much fun ever since. I think my skill level is intermediate. I love making all types of quilt patterns!

237 Cory { 11.18.09 at 10:11 am }

I learned how to quilt in High School when my mom also learned to quilt. I tell people my mom gave me the quilt bug and I haven’t been able to get rid of it. :-) Thank you for this wonderful give away. Take care and God bless, Cory

238 Claire { 11.18.09 at 10:17 am }

I have been sewing since junior high home economics class. (I still have the nightshirt I made.) I started quilting a while ago after meeting some ladies at my local fabric store convinced me to give it a whirl. I was hooked immediately.

Love your blog Rachel!

239 Lisa { 11.18.09 at 10:31 am }

oh man!! i’m definitely a beginner. I’ve only been quilting for about 1 year. i’ve completed 5 projects and have 4 in progress.
I love anything that looks old. Civil war quilts, pioneer quilts…. star blocks are some of my favorites but I’m still learning how to get all those points where they are supposed to be!!

240 Mary Jo Baird { 11.18.09 at 11:08 am }

I starte making “quilts” about 35 years ago if that is what you could call them! I made them out of old blue jeans and even had a quilt picture featured at that time in the Mother Earth News magazine! Didn’t have time to make very many while I was raising my boys and working but got back into quilts heavily about 2 years ago! I’ve made several and am just addicted to them! I could work on them all day every day, but I have to go to work to support my quilt habit! Guess that’s the circle of life! I suppose I am an intermediate quilter because I will try to tackle anything (except set in piecing-don’t like that!) I am so glad younger people are getting into quilting-they NEED to know how!

Thanks for the giveaway!

241 Connie Lee { 11.18.09 at 11:28 am }

Well my mom bought me my first sewing machine for my 21st birthday….(that was ten years ago). I thought she was crazy! What was I going to do with that? The thought of making clothes scared me! So I tinkered with a four patch quilt, easy peasy I know, but I was hooked! Since then I have challanged myself with non-traditional blocks and have started to do some applique. Always looking for new ideas and that perfect piece of fabric!

242 Lori B. { 11.18.09 at 11:33 am }

I’ve been quilting for 6 years. I would say I’m intermediate, but enjoy beginner projects more. Normally I am drawn to traditional looking quilts, but lately I’ve started liking the more modern looking designs and fabrics that have become popular. I love finding free projects to try on the internet and quilters’ blogs and have a whole list of them in my favorites. I would like to improve my free motion skills and begin getting out of my rut (aka stitch in the ditch-LOL). Thanks for your inspiring blog and the chance to win the great giveaway! :)

243 Sally { 11.18.09 at 11:39 am }

So happy to see Rachel being featured!
I started quilting about 7 yrs ago with my grandmother. I would say that I am still very much a beginner, though. Since the quilt we made together, I’ve only completed one other… I do have one in the works, though it seems it may take another 7 years, lol.

244 Esther L. { 11.18.09 at 11:44 am }

I started quilting when pregnant with my second child. He’s now 8 months old! I would definitely consider myself a beginner and have made 2 quilts using panels and charm squares and one quilt using a nine-patch block. It’s so addictive that my “wanting to make” list must be a mile long!

245 Micayla { 11.18.09 at 11:53 am }

I have only just starting quilting at 27 and I feel as I have missed out on something special…….so glad I found it now. I still cannot sew a straight line on my machine and am doing it by hand so I find it so chilling.

246 Laine { 11.18.09 at 11:54 am }

I have really only been quilting this past year. I joined the quilt along at Red Barn and have been going at it since then. I love to do embroidery work in the quilts and have made the WinterWonderland Quilt by CrabApple Hill. I have the top done but now have to find some one to quilt it for me. I am now working on the Over the River one by CrabApple Hill. Its addicting.

247 Susan { 11.18.09 at 12:05 pm }

I have been quilting for 1 year (this month) and because I am 63 I’m making up for all those years I told myself I couldn’t quilt! I have always had a creative spirit and to me I feel like I’m creating beauty from my soul when I quilt. It is a passion that I embrace with every fiber of my being. Like breathing I can’t live without it.

248 Heidi { 11.18.09 at 12:12 pm }

I have been quilting on and off since 1998. I haven’t made a lot since college, marriage and babies have come between then and now. I’d say I’m maybe an intermediate quilter. I’m just learing to free motion quilt. I’m excited for the challenges that this brings.

249 Lindzie H { 11.18.09 at 12:14 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 2 years. I started with a very basic quilt and am now officially addicted! My mom just bought a long arm quilter so I’ve been sending her my quilts so she can practice. She’s amazing quilter and I’m hoping that I can get some of her talent!

250 Maria M { 11.18.09 at 12:16 pm }

I’ve been quilting since my first class back in Oct 2008 and have been hooked. Since then I’ve made quilts for my family and for customers – I make memory quilts from baby clothes, shirts etc. My favorite quilt is one for a customer who wanted all of her child’s clothes and baby bedding used – when she sent it to me it turned out to be the same baby bedding I had used for my first child! I was sad to send it over but she told me that her daughter immediately wrapped herself up in it and her mother cried when they saw it. Made me feel like I had really accomplished something.

251 Karen McMahon { 11.18.09 at 12:28 pm }

I have been quilting for about 15 years. I think of myself as a beginner because there is so much more I have to learn about quilting. I’m not a master quilter yet, but this morning when I went to get my 13 year old up he was wrapped in the quilt I had given him the day before for his birthday, I asked him how he liked the quilt….he replied, “It’s so warm and cozy, that’s why I don’t want to get Up” …….and that’s why I quilt!

252 Geta Grama { 11.18.09 at 12:28 pm }

I started quilting eight years ago and since then I quilt all day long !
Unfortunately, in Romania, the country where I live, quilting is an unknown craft.
I love many quilting techniques but my passion is shadow trapunto.
Thank you for this great giveaway.

253 Pam C { 11.18.09 at 12:47 pm }

I’ve been sewing for 40 years, quilting for 17, it’s my most favorite thing. I dream about a long arm machine to complete the multitude of quilt tops I’ve done. I really enjoy your blog and will be attending New Moon showing Friday am. Go team Jacob:)

254 Diane { 11.18.09 at 12:54 pm }

I have returned to sewing and quilting after a long pause while my girls were growing up. I have now returned and I am hooked. I love applique and folk art primitive quilts. I am also enjoying embroidery work. Now I am retired and there is never enough time to spend doing these fun projects.

255 Erin { 11.18.09 at 1:19 pm }

I have been quilting for 7 years – I would say I am an advanced beginner – I like to keep it simple, sweet, and modern!

256 Debbie Kidd { 11.18.09 at 1:43 pm }

I started quilting about 24 years ago. I quilted extensively for about 4 years and even worked in a quilt shop for awhile. Then I moved and had kids, there just didn’t seem to be any time for it. Now my kids are grown and gone so I’ve started back into it and I just love it. I would consider myself a intermediate quilter.

257 Marielle { 11.18.09 at 2:43 pm }

I started quilting 6 years ago. I love small pieces, I love aplique, I love making big quilts, I love machine quilting, I love handquilting.

258 Linda K { 11.18.09 at 2:47 pm }

I’ve been sewing for 40 years, I guess, clothes, crafts, etc, but started quilting 3 years ago. I LOVE it!!! Thanks for a chance to win. Oh, I’m an advanced beginner, I guess!

259 Mandy M { 11.18.09 at 3:01 pm }

I’ve been sewing since I can remember, more than 30 years plus, but quilting for at least 20. I call myself an intermediated quilter. Thanks for the giveaway.

260 Kathy Cumpston { 11.18.09 at 3:11 pm }

I have been quilting for about 6 years. I would say I am an intermediate appliquer. I love hand embroidery too! It is my art therapy.

261 Betsy Lynn { 11.18.09 at 3:23 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 35 years, in between working and raising kids. Baby quilts are my favorite, usually pieced.
I’d say I’m experienced but not a pro.
Love Rachel!

262 Ann cummings { 11.18.09 at 3:25 pm }

I have been quilting about 15 years, I consider myself intermediate skill level. I love scrap quilts, and needle turn applique.

263 joanna tharp { 11.18.09 at 3:26 pm }

I have been quilting for a year. I am a beginner who is currently going thru an I love applique phase. I only do hand quilting and not to toot my own horn but I think I’m pretty good at it.

264 Melissa Perry { 11.18.09 at 3:47 pm }

I am a beginner quilter, again. I did a little quilting before the kids came then retired fabric. Now that the kids are a little older I’m back in it and loving it!!! This past summer I found Moda pre-cuts and know I’m back in the game. I don’t “quilt” my quilts. I have not learned that yet. I do enjoy sitting at the sewing machine and piecing my quilts together. I can’t wait to see where this craft takes me. Thanks for the give-a-away.

265 Lauren H. { 11.18.09 at 4:06 pm }

Advanced beginner at piecing; beginner, beginner at actually quilting the flimsy! “Drop the feed dogs” scares me!

266 Quay & Co. { 11.18.09 at 4:07 pm }

Rachel is such an inspiration. when I started quilting, i was pretty traditional, but with all the great modern ideas out there now, i’ve changed my taste. I love bright colors.

267 Karen { 11.18.09 at 4:09 pm }

I have been quilting for over 10 years now. I dabble in everything. Right now I am fascinated by art quilts and want to try those. Also, I am teaching myself to machine quilt…a slow process!!!

268 Barb Losee { 11.18.09 at 4:18 pm }

I have been quilting for 20+ years off and on. I started back in 1978-79, but took a haitus for a while after my daughter was born. After my son was born, I got back into quilting stronger than ever and have been so for the past 12 almost 13 years. I love applique the most but often piece. I am now beginning to quilt my own items and that is both scary and rewarding. I love fabric! I would consider my an intermediate quilter. Thanks!

269 Karen N { 11.18.09 at 5:42 pm }

I have been quilting for about 10 years now and the passion still hasn’t waned. Now that I have a family I find I am only really able to do peicing on the machine. The moda pre-cuts are such a wonderful invention. Also the wonderful designers are making such more glorious fabric than when I first started. I probably have intermediate skills but like I said at the moment more simpler designs and letting the glorious fabrics shine is my thing.

270 Mary { 11.18.09 at 5:48 pm }

Sewing and fabric have been “my thing” for as long as I can remember. I’ve been quilting 20-some years, with it pretty much taking over all my sewing (except for the occasional,annoying clothing repairs) for the last 12 to 15 years. I like to do all kinds of quilting with all kinds of different fabrics. I just love quilting!

271 Diane { 11.18.09 at 5:59 pm }

I quilted in highschool and for about 10 years after while my kids were little little, making them quilts and for all our friends getting married, so baby to king sized. When we moved I didn’t unpack the sewing and the that ended up in a 6 year lasps… Its been 3 moths since the stuff has been back outand I have started small with table runners and tought myself to free motion with the help of youtube. Planning to work up from there, have a baby and a throw in the works now.

272 Sandy K { 11.18.09 at 6:05 pm }

I have been “collecting” and building my stash for quite a few years…learning quilting more by observing then doing. I took a few classes for hand and machine piecing about 6 years ago. This year I truly started some serious quilt making….mostly lap size and tablerunner size. Since I have been blogging I have been really motivated and have done the most ever. I am probably an advanced beginner…..maybe a little less….but I love it.

273 Alisa { 11.18.09 at 6:23 pm }

I’ve been quilting for 6 years now. I like many different types of quilts but mostly more modern. It kind of depends on the recipient.

274 Amy { 11.18.09 at 7:28 pm }

I’ve been quilting for approximately 2 years. I love simple quilts. That probably sounds bad but I find it relaxing not to have to stress myself about matching and lots of points. I would say my skill level is confident beginner. While I have learned alot, I still have so much more to learn. Every class I take teaches me something new.

275 dianne { 11.18.09 at 7:36 pm }

let’s see … about eight years (after a twenty year break) … is “still learning” a skill level?

276 What Comes Next? { 11.18.09 at 8:04 pm }

My first quilt was for a friends wedding back in 1983 – I had no clue what I was doing, and if I saw it again now, I’d probably steal it back! After quite a long hiatus from quilting, I started up again in the late 90’s. I consider myself an intermediate level quilter, willing to try anything and everything, traditional right through to “artsy”. I love experimenting and learning new techniques.

277 Dandelion Quilts { 11.18.09 at 8:07 pm }

I have been quilting for about 3 years. I would say I am just beyond beginner. I love Rachel…she is a fabulous and super sweet.

278 Doris Jablonski { 11.18.09 at 8:23 pm }

My first quilt was a cross stitch bicentenial kit in 1976.
I am retired now and work on my quilts most of my
free time. I belong to a quilt guild and three quilt bees. I love needle turn applique.

279 Jackie R. in NC { 11.18.09 at 8:45 pm }

I am thrilled that you are introducing Rachel to those that read your blog! I am a loyal follower of Rachel and look forward to all she has to share within her blog’s, they’re fun and the her music is beautiful!
I’ve sewn since I was a child; began quilting about 10 years ago and it’s my passion. I’m an advanced quilter, I’ve taught classes & BOM’s, yet I know I can always learn something about quilting, even from a beginner who may see a new path to an old pattern.

280 Sheryl W { 11.18.09 at 8:54 pm }

I made my first quilt in 1995..so nearly 15 years ago but really only became an addict in the last 10 years. i love quick things but so admire those handpieced quilts that take years to complete. One day….

281 charlie { 11.18.09 at 8:58 pm }

Gosh, my 1st quilt was a baby quilt for the bosses baby. Didn’t reallly know what I was doing then, but it turned out okay. That was 30 yrs ago.. I make quilts for beds, sofa quilts, babyquilts, doll quilts, wall quilts and hangings. I think I have good skills but am alway learning to do new things and I love it. I enjoy doing applique and sewing by hand. I am wanting to learn how to machine quilt and suppose that is my next stretching experience. I probably enjoy sofa throw quilts the best, especially by a warm fire on a cold winter’s night.

By the way, Rachel Griffith is the bomb and will be an excellent addition to Quiltmaker. Can you tell I just adore her!? A fabric bundle from Riley Blake Designs would just be the cat’s meow in my book. Thanks for the sign-up opportunity

282 Sandy { 11.18.09 at 10:00 pm }

I have been quilting a little over 2 years, and I am SO addictied. I guess you could call me a beginner at quilting, but, I have been sewing for a very LONG time. My favs for quilting have to be Paper Piecing. I have only finished ONE so far,(King size New York Beauty) but, I really love the freedom of PP.
I love all the new designs that are coming out with all the bright, bright, bright (can you tell I love bright colors) colors and wild patterns.
Keeping the fingers crossed on the give away…………..as a quilter, we cal alway use MORE fabric.

283 Adrianne { 11.18.09 at 10:01 pm }

I’ve been quilting since this summer. So far I have three under my belt and I’m a total beginner. I am soaking up all things quilty, new quilts, old quilts, fabric and tools. I would love to make a stacked coin, string, and pinwheel quilt in my very near future.

284 Wyo Di { 11.18.09 at 10:03 pm }

I made a number of crazy quilt pillow tops as a young girl thanks to nuturing from my Grammy. I loved the feather stitch which her Mom often used on an uitility crazy quilt which I own today. My first completed quilt was a home economics class project in high school. It was made of polyester knit strips (now am I dating myself or what!) I’ve been a quilter “wannabe” for years and have gotten back to this art about 5 years ago. I am a life long learner, so love trying all the techniques, new and old.

285 anne { 11.18.09 at 10:37 pm }

I have been quilting for a few years and made the usual sampler blocks, easy lap quilts etc but I seem to be drawn to the new bright fabbies and the improvisational quilts that seem to be the trend now, gotta make one of those, but still thinking about it. Happy Stitching

286 Cara { 11.18.09 at 11:20 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 7 years, since I was 18. My skill level? I ave no idea lol, not beginner but not accurate enough to call myself and intermediate, but I can do paper piecing, appliqué etc. I love all sorts of projects.

287 Trudi { 11.19.09 at 2:22 am }

I’ve been quilting for almost 20 years, in and around work and children! I’d would say I’m and expeierience quilter, working towards advanced. ~A fabric addict, prolific in activity, I really enjoy seeing and reading what every one else has been up to too!

288 Upstatelisa { 11.19.09 at 2:52 am }

I started sewing at 13, quilting at 30 (that makes 17 years of quilting all ready!) and have been addicted to both forever!!!!!

289 Jeanne { 11.19.09 at 4:43 am }

I have been sewing since I was a little girl and started quilting
5 years ago being self taught in both. I would say the log cabin
quilt is a favorite of mine. I enjoy sewing & quilting with my
grandaughters.

290 chinell { 11.19.09 at 5:45 am }

Hello. I haven’t been quilting very long… Just something that I’ve started teaching myself along the way… with the help of some wonderful blogs too I must say. I mostly make baby quilts as shower gifts. I’ve made some baby doll quilts to for my best friends daughters baby dolls.

291 Helen { 11.19.09 at 5:58 am }

Good Going Rachel!! Luv quilting– I have yet to finish a project– after YEARS of starting projects.. but I’m getting there!

292 Alicia Key { 11.19.09 at 6:17 am }

I’ve been quilting since 1980, having sewn clothing prior and done all sorts of other crafts. When I started quilting, all the other crafts went by the wayside.I bought a Gammill in 1995, upgraded it in 2007, and dearly love to quilt & piece tops. My favorite part is watching the quilt TOP become a 3-D QUILT! and I love Moda too, and all the other fabrics as well! just love those cottons, i guess!

293 Jo { 11.19.09 at 6:39 am }

I’ve been sewing since….since. I’ve been quilting about 20 years. I love any type of project…if I am giving it away, I love precuts as it is fast and easy. If it’s for me….I love civil war reproduction fabrics.

294 patty { 11.19.09 at 7:00 am }

I started quilting as a very young woman in 1975 and haven’t stopped. I was in 4-H as a kid and my mom also sewed. I have moved from making traditional quilts to hand dyeing my own fabric and improvisational pieceing.

295 Deb C { 11.19.09 at 7:04 am }

Yeah, I found you thru Rachel’s blog too. I have been quilting since about 16. My neighbor’s mom was making a cathedral window quilt and I thought it looked cool so I bought a bunch of 1/4 yd cuts, drew a 3″ grid (with a pen :) ) on the back with a ruler and cut the fabric apart with scissors. My mom bought me a used Montgomery Ward machine for my birthday so that was my first quilt and it turned out to be a full size quilt that I even put a handmade ruffled binding onto + matching shams, and I still have them. (It was supposed to be for my boyfriend but I decided it was not masculine enough so I kept it).

296 Cindy { 11.19.09 at 7:05 am }

Rachel, I came over from your blog. I’ve been quilting about 3 years now. I’m an intermediate quilter (so they say at the fabric store where I frequently take classes) but I feel like such a beginner! Your designs are gorgeous and I love following what you’re doing on your blog too. I wish you all the good fortune there is bz you are a talented designer and quilter!

297 Kristine { 11.19.09 at 7:09 am }

I have been quilting for just over 4 years now. It started as a ministry at church, making baby quilts for the church members. I seem to be drawn toward quilts I see in pictures, then alter the finished size to what I want it to be, which requires lots of fun calculations (and sometimes frustration). I would rate myself about intermediate level. I like kits even if I don’t make the pattern because then all the fabric is picked out for me! I’m finishing off 4 quilts for Christmas, and finally one of them is for me. YAY! I love Rachel’s blog, too!

298 Kelli { 11.19.09 at 7:25 am }

I started quilting about 13 years ago, but I’ve only been totally mad, crazy, all out consumed by it for about 2 years :)

299 Joan { 11.19.09 at 7:32 am }

I learned paper piecing three years ago and am now doing traditional quilting also. I have a daughter named Holly and am intrigued by the holly quilt in your magazine, which I subscribe to. Thanks for all the great ideas! :)

300 Kelli Kramer { 11.19.09 at 8:18 am }

I feel the same way…my guilty beast can’t be tamed either!!!!

301 Sharon Sisel { 11.19.09 at 8:38 am }

I took my first quilting class in September and I am already a quilting addict! I LOVE to choose the fabrics and arrange the finished blocks into my masterpieces – art is in the eye of the beholder! I quickly began following lots and lots of quilting blogs and P.S. is one of my favorites. My new passion is my relaxation and my joy.

302 LindaW { 11.19.09 at 8:59 am }

I took a quilt class about 10 years ago, but didn’t do much after that. When the grandchildren began to come, I would try to make quilts for each on. (Still working on that!) When I quit work about a year ago, I started trying to quilt again. I would consider myself an “advanced beginner”. I love the end results, but because I tend to be a perfectionist the process can be frustrating. I love all the new “modern” quilts I am finding on the quilt blogs.

303 Holly Elder { 11.19.09 at 9:42 am }

I started quilting at age 10 when I took a 4-H class. I have created ever since. In 1989 I joined a quilt guild, in 1999 I bought a longarm and in 2007 I added computerized to my machine. I enjoy my home based business and I am continually LEARNING so I don’t feel I have “arrived” as far as skill level!

304 Amber { 11.19.09 at 10:05 am }

I’m very much a beginner so I’m trying out a little bit of everything to see what I like best!

305 Diane Harris { 11.19.09 at 10:25 am }

Joan, I have to tell you a story about my daughter Holly, for whom the quilt was designed. In college she met a guy and they became best friends. His last name is Wood. She told him, “We could never date, because if we ever got married, my name would be Holly Wood.” It took him a couple of years but he finally proposed anyway, and they are the happiest married couple now. She uses both her maiden and married last names together, because people tease her so badly about Holly Wood.

306 rachel { 11.19.09 at 10:33 am }

oh diane.
your daughter…holly wood.
too cute.
:)

307 Stephanie { 11.19.09 at 11:49 am }

I’ve been sewing for a long time now, but quilting about 5-ish years. It all happened when I was pregnant with my first daughter. Among all those baby hormones, there must have been some quilt hormone that activated because I haven’t stopped since! Gotta give a shout out to Ohio since Rachel is a Buckeye too. :)

308 Lisa Vandermeer { 11.19.09 at 11:55 am }

I have been quilting for 4 years….since I was 25. I’ve made a few full size quilts for our house and family but a TON of baby quilts for friends. I love Rachel’s blog and the Moda Bake Shop. I am part of a quilt group and I love figuring out the “math” of a new pattern and choosing and matching fabric of course!!

309 Rose { 11.19.09 at 12:55 pm }

I have been quilting for two years and still consider myself a beginner! There is just so much I don’t know. I do pretty basic stuff, I’ve never done triangles, so most patterns I go after are simple. Thanks for the chance at the giveaway!

310 Chris { 11.19.09 at 1:06 pm }

Hi , I’m Chris and I have been sewing for 30 plus years. I have only been really quilting for a little over a year. My interest was sparked when I had my first Grandbaby last April. :) Thats all it took! I have made several things from Rachel’s blog tutorials. I have enjoyed using Moda fabric..well I just LOVE all fabric! :) I’d say my skill level is intermediate. Thanks for the give-away chance!

311 Celine { 11.19.09 at 3:34 pm }

I have been quilting for about 7 years now and I suppose I have an intermediate level. I like trying all sorts of challenge and having lots of projects on the go!

312 Mikol { 11.19.09 at 4:06 pm }

I started quilting about 5 years ago. I have taken the last, oh, 18 months or so off with a newborn. Now that she is a little older, I’m starting to get back into the sewing room.

313 Carolyn { 11.19.09 at 5:02 pm }

I’ve been quilting for a year. I’ve discovered a great love of it! Prior to quilting I was an avid knitter. I now divide my time between both loves. One quilt I’d love to make is a prairie square quilt. Oh and something with circles in it!

314 Iva { 11.19.09 at 5:09 pm }

After admiring quilts for a few years, I finally bit the bullet and made my first quilt about 20 years ago. Then, after making two more quilts, life kind of got in the way and I picked it up again (off and on) about 10 years ago. Now I’m busy making something quite often. I guess I could be called an advanced beginner?

315 G { 11.19.09 at 6:40 pm }

A “quilter” homemade and self-taught for 13 years and perhaps at the intermediate level. Like challenges and learning – love textiles and color.

316 Heidi { 11.19.09 at 6:57 pm }

I started sewing in home economics in school. I have made crafts, clothes and even upholstered and now I am quilting. I have been totally bitten by the bug. Quilting has replaced scrapbooking as my favorite hobby. I look for excuses to quilt something. I “window shop” online and bookmark my favorite sites. I am a Moda junkie. I check their web site daily, sometimes more frequently. I have started a blog just to keep up with all the blogs I follow. I love it when I find a site where I can learn beginner tricks and tips.

I just love Rachel’s blog! Always happy, Always creative :) My addiction started 4 years ago & is going strong. I love making quilts & it makes me so happy when the local shop allows me to make a quilt for display in the store. Oh and I sure LOVE Riley Blake fabrics :)

Made my first cottons and polyester quilt (!) back in 1976. It was so hard finding good cotton fabric back then. Didn’t go back to quilting until 1991. I’ve been addicted ever since!

I have been quilting, off and on, since I was about 12. I still have the first quilt I started-it is a cathedral window- What was I thinking?!? I was thinking it would be all done, it would be easy!!! Man I was I ever way off base. ;) I currently work at my LQS a couple of days a week and I would say my level is intermediate.

I have always wanted to learn and my great aunt had the opportunity over the summer to show me how to start. I am enjoying all of the fabrics but have very basic skills at this point. Every project is a new adventure and a learning opportunity.

321 Joy P { 11.19.09 at 10:26 pm }

I’ve been quilting for about 15 years, only seriously for about 10. I’d consider myself an intermediate quilter. I like traditional blocks and scrap quilts.

Hey I’ve been following your blog for a while now!!! I think that this might be something you would be interested in. Maybe you’d like to participate or just do a little post about it! I’d love to see it be a great book ☺ (P.S. I’m not getting anything for passing the message along!)

The theme for this Cookbook is “Quick and easy recipes, so we can get back to quilting!”.

I’ve been quilting for about 3 years now. I guess I could qualify as an intermediate quilter… but with 8 children ages 3 months to 12 years, I tend to gravitate toward ultra simple patterns and projects so I can be sure to get them done! Still, I love to learn new things, and aspire to making truly wonderful quilts someday! P.S. I just discovered your blog tonight. I’m so happy to have found it. I’ll be back!

324 angela d. { 11.19.09 at 11:29 pm }

I’ve been quilting for over 10 years. Moderate level quilter.

325 Andy { 11.20.09 at 12:15 am }

I have been a quilter since I was little (so for 25 years or so??) I remember my grandma teaching me how to hand quilt a small doll blanket she had pieced. I think I even still have it somewhere! I have been quilting more seriously in the last couple of years and I’m absolutely loving all of the gorgeous modern fabrics – they really inspire me. (I love Riley Blake – I just bought some for curtains in my toddler’s room) I guess I would say that I’m an intermediate quilter. As far as what kind of quilts I make…I’m trying to do a little of everything. I just recently finished two paper-pieced quilt tops.

I just love Rachel’s blog and patterns. Such a very talented and oh so busy woman. At the moment I am making a Schnibbles every month for the first time working with a range a fabric, which I enjoy more than I thought. I’ve been quilting for over 10 years now and blogging for a year. What an enrichment to my life!!!

327 Bonnie L. Browne { 11.20.09 at 9:10 am }

I haven’t been making quilts all that long, but my grandmother was a quilter and I always watched her work. I really enjoy making fairly simple quilts to donate to Linus. Have made a couple of larger quilts and have a whole lot of them on my to do list. My stash isn’t all that large, so would love to win the fabric.

328 Sandi Andersen { 11.20.09 at 11:00 am }

I made my first quilt for my daughter when she was born in 1970. I’ve been sewing since I was a little girl and hardly a day goes by without some stitching in my hands. I consider myself and intermediate quilter. I enjoy handstitching more than machine work. Love to work with wool! I’ve made clothing for our family, drapes, etc. and spent over 25 years making miniature doll clothes and furniture (1″=1′). I am never bored! I love to design and am enjoying sharing a BOM series in my Yahoo group and another one in my Wooly Buddies group. I love this blogging world as it has inspired me in a way that I never imagined just two years ago. Maybe one day, I, too, can have a block featured in your magazine. :-)

329 Melissa { 11.20.09 at 10:52 pm }

Wait… I’m supposed to make something with the fabric I’ve been buying? Just kidding. I’ve finished four or five quilts in the year I’ve been quilting. Lots of fun!

330 Julie { 11.21.09 at 8:05 am }

I’m still a very beginning quilter, but an experienced seamstress. I have a very serious fabric addiction, I love it! Thanks for the chance to win more..

331 Wanda { 11.21.09 at 10:48 am }

I have been stitching since childhood and quilting since the ’80’s. I am fascinated with applique and consider myself at the intermediate skill level. I’ve been a subscriber to Quiltmaker since the beginning and still have every issue. Wouldn’t part with them!

332 Helen E FROM DENVER { 11.21.09 at 1:34 pm }

Have been quilting for about 20 years. I am at the intermediate level. Would like to at the advanced level but Chronic Fatigue Syndrome plaques my life, so do what I can and when I can. Like applique.

My paternal grandmother made beautiful quilts, hoever, I didn’t learn from her, unfortunately.

Have a lovely TG to you all!

333 rebecca { 11.21.09 at 5:49 pm }

I consider myself an intermediate quilter with lots of new things I would still like to try. So many projects……

334 amy smart { 11.21.09 at 9:12 pm }

Technically I’ve been quilting for about 20 year, but not until 10 years ago did I start to take things seriously. I’m probably an Intermediate level quilter – mainly because I love projects that are quick for that gratification of finishing something – but I’m feeling ready to tackle deeper stuff.

Fun to hear from Rachel!

335 Pat S { 11.22.09 at 5:21 am }

I’ve been quilting for 20 years and would consider myself at an intermediate level – I love applique but also love using bright, contemporary fabrics with less intricate pieced designs.

336 Renee G { 11.22.09 at 12:13 pm }

I’ve been sewing for a number of years, but just started quilting. Mostly I’ve done a few applique pieces.

337 Robin F { 11.22.09 at 4:24 pm }

I started quilting in 1981 when I had my first child. I still quilt, mostly smaller quilts now or quilted clothing and quilted house hold items.

338 Janet Kopecky { 11.22.09 at 4:42 pm }

I started making baby blankets that were embroidered blocks and tied 32 years ago. I enjoy all techniques and consider myself a beginner in some areas and advanced in others. I love learning new things. I recently retired and hope to have time to quilt alot this winter. I’m addicted to quilting blogs! It is so much fun to travel all over the world from my home computer interacting with talented quilters and designers. I am enjoying my new issue of 100 blocks and hopping to all the new websites listed at the heading with the designer. What a cool issue!

339 Bridget Wideman { 11.22.09 at 10:48 pm }

My brother got me started 5 years ago simply by sending me a “Quilt-in-a-day” Log Cabin book, fabric, and the basic supplies to get started. He saw a quilt shop while on holiday and said the brightly colored quilts in the window reminded him of me, and since I had recently decided to learn how to use the sewing machine I was given 15 years prior, maybe making a quilt would be fun for me. Well, I got totally hooked from the get-go! I had to take my sewing machine to the quilt shop so they could teach me how to use it (back then I used a basic, mechanical model Kenmore…nothing computerized. And I still needed help! I’d never been a sewer). I’m now an avid quilter and consider myself to be at the intermediate level. I sure wish I’d have picked up this hobby in my 20’s instead of my 40’s because the ideas are just overflowing! But I’ve done a pretty good job building a stash in short period of time!

I started quilting in 1973 — teaching a class in an adult ed program, as preparations started for celebrating our Bicentenniel. …so, I am considered a professional. My background was as a home economics major with an emphasis on clothing — quilting soon took over. I still like traditional piecing the best.

341 Patty { 11.23.09 at 10:49 am }

I started by sewing clothes. But quilting has taken over. Taken over my basement, my car trunk, my closets, etc…………..

342 Paula { 11.23.09 at 3:32 pm }

I was in a quilt shop this weekend with my 6 YO daughter. My child volunteered that I had a quilt made in high school (I’d shown it to her recently-it is falling apart from age and poor handling) and then informed the clerk, “and she made it 30 years ago.” Thanks a lot, kid. That quilt has all the hallmarks of a first quilt: blanket for batting, sheet for backing, poor quality fabric (in my defense, that fabric was all I had access to then) and machine quilting sans walking foot. While in college I took a hand-piecing workshop and made another quilt (with another blanket batting and sheet backing). Now I mostly collect fabric and make small things like baby quilts, wall hangings and table runners. Machine piecing and hand quilting are my favorites, but I’ve tried machine quilting, paper piecing, and applique. I love Quiltmaker for all the quilting designs and still have most issues since 1995.

No…the quilty beast cannot be controlled. There is always a new technique, a new tool and fabulous new fabrics.
I got the quilting bug from viewing quilts at my grandmother’s home and was a self taught quilter in the mid 70s. I’ve always loved trying very challenging techniques – just to see if I can do them, but I would consider myself an intermediate quilter. IT HAS BEEN GREAT THERAPY!!!!!

I have been quilting for about 5 years now. I consider myself an intermediate quilter because I know the basics and there is always something more to learn. I love quilting. I make bed quilts, wall hangings, table toppers, tote bags, anything really!
Thanks for the contest!

346 Lori Alberti { 12.12.09 at 9:33 am }

My first quilt was in 1983. My skills are intermediate to advanced depending on technique and I teach classes every once in a while. I gravitate towards bed quilts for the most part, but am expanding into wall quilts with more of an arts type look. There are so many wonderful ideas in quilting that I love subscribing to many magazines, but I have subscribed to Quiltmaker the longest. In the quilt industry, the design possibilities are endless and that is my favorite part of quilting. Good luck to all in this fun contest.

I have been piecing tops now for 4-5 years, i find that lately I see pretty patterns and realize I can make that now. Before I would dream and look at them and knew I wasnt up to anything past a 9 patch. NOW, I think I can try things on my own. At the moment, I am packing up a past life of my own so that sewing can take the place of my dearest love, detail ceramic painting. WHich was my job for the last 28 years. Now it is making charity quilts for soldiers and advocacy centers. to give back when I had pancreatic cancer to others that do with less.
