Meet Jacqueline de Jonge
Several Quilt Markets ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Jacqueline de Jonge, the amazing designer of the Be Colourful patterns. Her foundation-pieced designs are full of rich, vibrant colors. I caught up with her in Houston at Quilt Market and asked her to be a guest blogger for us. She also gave me some of her patterns and a set of note cards to give away on this blog. Leave a comment telling us your favorite color combinations to work with in a quilt, and I’ll randomly draw 5 names on Tuesday, November 10th around noon. Each winner will receive one of Jacqueline’s patterns or the set of note cards.

Quilts are beautiful!
Everyone who is making a quilt finds his or her piece really unique and special! Perhaps it has something to do with the purpose for which the quilt is made or the event where the quilt is received or given as a present. Nevertheless, each quilt is a piece of art where the maker spends a lot of love, enthusiasm and fun in making it!
With that consideration in mind I started to publish my own pattern line under the name Be Colourful. My patterns are now sold worldwide. It is my goal to inspire quilters all over the world with my colorful patterns. No, it is better to say that it has become my passion and my main importance. It has come from the talent I have received from God. I feel myself rich and blessed by Him that I can do this.
How do I start with a design, where do I get my inspiration from, how do I put all the different fabrics together…every day I receive these kind of questions. Inspiration for a design happens in a single moment during the day. Whether it is in a meeting at work, or a sign on a truck, an advertisement in the newspaper or a magazine, a wheel on a car, a flower…it can be anything. You can see that the shapes I use are traditional and therefore very accessible. But my use of color is maybe not so very common, it is different.

I love to experiment with fabrics and colors and to come up with unique combinations. A design is never steady with me. I can always adjust my drawing as a quarter of the design is always beside me in my studio. Sometimes I have great expectations for a new design along with the colors and fabrics that I planned to use in the design. But once I start to assemble the quilt, it is sometimes not exactly what I expected it to be. Yes this also happens! Because I work on one design at a time, I am able to adjust the pattern at any time. Once the quilt is finished and the pattern descriptions are written, I can leave it and start on another design.
It often happens that ideas pop up in my head when I am quilting. Then I go to my fabric stash to gather different fabrics and colors. This also inspires me to come up with a new design. And those designs ultimately lead to a new pattern which you can find in your own quilt store in Dutch, English and German.

I have started teaching classes in the US and I really enjoy that! We are now working on a schedule for April 2010, starting in Texas, then to Colorado, Nevada and Ontario. As soon as we have the dates set, we will mention them on our website.
May I invite you to enter my website so that I can inspire you. I really hope that you will enjoy the Be Colourful designs!

Wow, Jacqueline’s quilts are beautiful and inspiring! My personal color choices often involve bright colors as well — those colors just seem to jump out and grab you. I am also a fan of blue and yellow and of the deep, rich reds and oranges of fall.
I love those vivid colors and have worked with rainbow colors on a cathedral window quilt. I should have used black as my background instead of unbleached muslin and I might have gotten something similar to this. partway through the quilt, I lost interest. It was all hand done while waiting. Waiting at a doctor’s office, dentist’s office, picking up children, at games, etc.
My most recent combination is blue and yellow. It is almost done and I am so proud of myself for sticking with it to the end.
Your give-aways sound so beautiful, I can’t help myself to try my hand at winning. Thank you

I love your quilts. I lean towards the vibrant Jewel colours.
I love all the colors!! My favorites, though, are purple, blue, and gold. I love this generous giveaway!
Thanks,

I am always drawn to reds first and then the earth colors. Something is so calming about the colors of nature. I am astounded at the beauty of your quilts and the meticulous workmanship!
I love the bright colors too! Love the way they pop.
I haven’t made one yet, but I love blue and yellow whenever I see a quilt in this combo.

My favorite is black with a rainbow of brilliant colors.
I love her quilts and my favorite combination is brights and black.
wow. Her quilts are amazing. I love the brights and black that she uses. I love batiks and in my quilts I often put blue and purple together as they are my favourite colours.
My favorite color is batik. Any color, shade, tone, tint as long as it’s batik.
I love the look of red and white together. And anything vintage looking.
Thanks for the chance!! I love a combo of green/gray/yellow right now…and recently did a log cabin block with all solids and it was awesome…next on my list!
I love the country colors all together, dark red, dark yellow, dark blue and brown, it looks awesome for me!
Wow those quilts are amazing!
Anyways, I think that my favorite color combinations are pinks & greens. But I like variety, and it seems that I am always making quilts of all different colors, just to try it out. But ya, pink and green really catch my eye!
I love the colors from yellow to golden brown and from blue to green. Your quilts are awesome! I wish one day I could quilt like that!
Those quilts are awesome……
I will most definitely check out your website…..
I like bright bold colors, just depends on the mood I am in….
stunning quilts Jacqueline.I have checked out your website and feel so inspired. my favourite colours are reds burgandy oranges, purples and gold and lately taupe.
I go through phases where different color combinations really speak to me. Lately, it is pink and brown, which surprises me. For the longest time, I thought brown was the second ugliest color (second to gray) and pink was only for girly girls (which I am not). But, as I grow older, my tastes change, I guess. But my absolute favorite combination is a random assortment of scrappy fabrics. I love the surprise of seeing two unlikely fabrics together and playing nicely. Here’s hoping I win!
Such beautiful quilts! I like fall colors; red and black; purple and green.
Ever since I moved to our house, I have been focused on blue, yellow and white. Have 2 UFOs to finish in these colors. I have come to love Jacqueline’s pattern and their bold gradations of the whole light spectrum
Tomato red, magenta and turquoise, and black will bring any color forward. I learned to appreciate these colors together when I lived in the SW. I find your quilts so delightful with their exuberant use of color. I prefer to work with bright colors too. I love their energy.
I am always in awe when I see Jacqueline’s work–just the colors alone make me happy!
I think I’ve adopted orange as a neutral color. My favorite quilts are teal/orange, pink/orange, and green/orange/white. Orange, teal, red, and bright pink are always necessities to me!
My favorite colors are fuschia, turquoise, emerald, violet and bright yellow. I like to use these with black. It makes a really striking quilt.
I love the vibrant jewel colors in your patterns. The quilts are so uplifting! Recently I like to work with a purple and lime green combination.
Love your quilts even on my small iPhone screen they ‘pop’
the colors I am working with now are pink and yellowish/gold.
Thanks for sharing
Love green and purple color combo. Your quilts are beautiful!
green usually with pink/red
Lovely quilts! Actually, I’m kind of a boring quilter. I like the brown and cheddar combos! But I like to look at-brights!
I love bright vivid colors. I like to take a rich blue (pthalo blue/green shade) and add other colors with it. Sometimes yellow and green with a red or orange “pop” added.
I really want to say “I choose the rainbow” as my color selection. “
purple and orange … and a bit of lime green … what’s not to love?!?
I think my favorite color combination changes with every quilt. That’s what makes quilting so fun. My latest quilt colors are gold and gray. Yummy.
wow I love the bright colors. I am a bright color, solid fabrics kinda of quilter so that is awesome.
I tend to work with lots of bright clear colors. I love her patterns!
I am currently working with navy blue with a splash of other blues, greens & some hot pinks! Thanks for sharing the photos of these beautiful, eye-popping quilts!
I love to work with bright colors. Orange and purple are my favorites!
I love the gorgeous brights and jewel tones in all these wonderful quilts.
I love the jewel tones and tend to throw in lime green or yellow for that hint of sparkle! I love her quilts and would love to be entered into the give-a-way!

The quilts are absolutely beautiful. The deep rich colors always make me happy and always call to me. I love working with lots of colors. These quilts are an inspiration to me.
Wow! What an amazing and fun quilt!
Right now I love brown! So any color, mixed with brown, is something I love!
Amazing how black with the bright colors works so well.
I love bright colors and the interplay of colors. A current project is completing a quilt and curtains for a granddaughter using some of her favorites – purple, yellow, turquoise, red, and lime green. The valance for her curtains is edged in purple prairie points, and one square of her quilt includes a similar prairie point motif. She’ll love it!
I think my favorite combination of colors is the pink and brown mixture, especially a reproduction look updated. My second favorite would be a black/white/red combination. Jacaqueline’s colors are so vibrant, it would be a wonderful departure from what I usually do to make one of these beautiful quilts. I have been a fan since I saw her first pattern. She just keeps getting better.
Thanks for a chance to win. I am lovin’ red/white (tan)/blue combos and red/black/brown/cream combos right now. What beautiful quilts!!
Blue and White, I love blue and white. I have yet to make a blue and white quilt, but I find these colors to be very calming on the eyes.
WOW ! I always considered myself a “heritage” colors quilt person. But you have definitely turned me toward the black backgrounds with the beautiful jewel tone colors. I am in awe of your workmanship ~ truly a God given talent.
It is amazing how black sets off color in a quilt and reaches into the soft moment of the soul with color. As in life, the darkest moments have the capacity to brings forth the most joy. Thank you!
Awesome quilts! The movement is great in all of her quilts. I like to use blue, green, and purple a lot. Of course red, orange and yellow are really fun too.
Wonderful Quilts. I love to use brights and black. Love the first quilt. Gorgeous.. Thanks for the chance to win.
I met Jacqueline at quilt market in Portland several years ago. I had already made one of her quilts, but to see hers in person was amazing. I love working with rainbow colors on dark fabrics.
