I have been making pet pads for 2 animal shelters for years.
I use leftover polar fleece, sweatshirt fleece, or decorator fabric for the covers. If they need a filler I will use leftover batting sewn to inexpensive cotton fabric or old mattress pads that people give me for that purpose. Sometimes I will get donations of unsellable fabric from a discount fabric store and use that in any way I can. Also, our quilt guild has a spinoff group that makes quilts for a womens shelter with cotton fabric pieces or scraps that are donated to us. We make string quilts using fabric strips sewn to a muslin foundation. Usually they are warm enough with just a flannel backing and no batting. The quilt guild supports our efforts by providing funds for batting and backing. All of these projects are greatly appreciated by the recipients. Any pieces of fabric that are too small to use for a project are donated to a mission that sells them by the pound and ships them over seas. I've heard that there are places that have huge machines that grind up fabric and use it to make other things, like coat linings, etc.

I've been making children pillow cases for a homeless shelter. They then have something to keep for themselves.

My primary focus is sewing/quilting for various charities. SPCA is just one of them. But I want to share about a great sewing project to help animals living in shelters. I think this project could easily be replicated in every city/community and make a difference. The creator isn't even a sewing enthusiast, she just had this vision that pets living in shelters would have a better chance getting adopted if they had a good night sleep on a comfy bed. So, she is doing her best to recruit volunteers and donations and making thousands of comfy pet beds.

And yes, I have volunteered to help make pet beds thru the Kennel Comforters' Project. I also help make quilts for various charity fundraisers, CR4TS/Camp Reach For The Sky (kids with cancer), Project Linus, and children living in shelters & foster care, plus quilts to raise money for Susan G. Komen For The Cure.

I lost my dear scottie a year and a half ago. Depression set in and thanks to Jim, the wonderful director of Scottie Kingdom, I have since rescued two very loving scotties. I made a quilt in Nike's memory and donated it to Scottie Kingdom for a fund raiser and have another in the works. After reading about Jan's endeavors, I couldn't resist making some pillows for the rescue. I asked for help from my quilt guild, and have acquired many scraps. I think all animals need a soft and warm pillow to sleep on, but especially rescue dogs which usually come from bad and dirty places to begin with. Thanks Jan for a great idea!

I make lap quilts for kids for my church's Hugs Ministry. We pair the quilts with a stuffie and give them to the local fire department. They give them to kids in crisis situations. Thank you for offering this wonderful give-away. Take care and God bless, Cory

I was approached by a beautiful lady in our town to make a graduation quilt for her granddaughter. This lady was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and lost her dear husband to cancer only shortly after her sad news. She wanted to have family memory photos on the quilt. With a lot of imput from her I made a quilt called Forget Me Nots by Mimi Detrich from her book because of Breast Cancer. I will never forget the joy in her eyes when she saw the final pieced quilt. I asked her to write the label for the quilt and she wanted it to say You will always be in my Heart, so my label was made in the shape of a heart. I have made many quilts, but have never felt so much gratitude for my work until this one from both the grandmother and granddaughter.

What a fabulous idea! Stuffies for pets!
My daughter's girl scout troop has been sewing hats for kids with cancer. We've enjoyed making some polar fleece love!
