Batik Remix ’08 Winners

Batik Remix ’08 Winners

And the Winners Are . . .

Wow! We were blown away by the magnificent creations entered in our Batik Remix ’08 contest. The challenge was to give any Quiltmaker pattern an original interpretation using Robert Kaufman Artisan Batiks. Debra Lunn and Michael Mrowka, the artists behind these stunning batiks, joined QM Executive Editor June Dudley to select the winners.

First Place
Reflections of a Rising Sun

Ann took a block from a very traditional quilt and then let her imagination take over. She adapted the foundation arcs and resized them to make circles of many sizes. She repeated them, layered them, played with colors and fussy cut batik motifs to make this stunning quilt. Ann used Sharon Schamber’s “Piec-lique” technique to applique all of the circles to her background. She finished with beautiful quilting, often letting the batik designs guide her. Congratulations Ann—thanks for the inspiration!
Ann Petersen • Aurora, Colorado
Original Pattern: Rising Sun, published in
QM March/April ’01 (No. 78).

Second Place
Remixed Reel

Alice couched pearl cotton with monofilment along the edges of her applique for a standout finish. The batiks she selected transformed this quilt from looking classic to looking wow. Beautiful job Alice!
Alice Means • Bolton, Connecticut
Original Pattern: Pennsylvania Reel, published in QM Nov/Dec ’03 (No. 94).

Third Place
Pueblo Pots

Karen used the colors and shading of the batiks in stunning ways to bring these pots to life. They are so lifelike that you want to reach out and pick them up. Magnificent job Karen!
Karen Peterson • Mead, Colorado
Original Pattern: A Cup of Tea for Kaffe, published in QM Sept/Oct ‘05 (No. 105)

Honorable Mention

Barbara used subtly striped batiks to make this wonderful canvas to showcase her beautiful beading. The greens and blues are soothing to look at and the beads keep you looking in all directions. Lovely work Barbara!

Curator’s Choice
Stripes & Stars for Sam

While Diane’s color choice is similar to the original quilt, her 3-D stars and stripes took this entry to a level not often seen in quilting. Very well done Diane!
