Using the Serendipity Tools in EQ7

The Serendipity tools are a fast and easy way to create new blocks from existing designs in your Sketchbook. The Serendipity tools are available on the Block Worktable by clicking BLOCK > Serendipity and choosing one of the options in the list.

You must have blocks saved in your Sketchbook in order to use the Serendipity tools. You can copy blocks from the Block Library or draw your own. Depending on which Serendipity options you choose, your blocks may also have to fit a certain set of rules in order to be used. For example, when using the Merge Blocks option, a background block must be an EasyDraw block that has at least one parallelogram.

Click BLOCK > Serendipity > Merge Blocks.

The left column is for the background block and the right column is for the merge block. Both columns use blocks from the Sketchbook. Notice that the star block does not appear in the left column. That’s because it does not fit the rules for a background block (no parallelogram space to fit another block).

Choose a block from both columns. When you are happy with the pairing shown in the middle, click Add to Sketchbook to save the new block in your project.

Click BLOCK > Serendipity > Frame Block.

The blocks saved in the Sketchbook appear in the right column. Click on the block you’d like to use. The left column has the pre-drawn frames available; click to select one. When you are happy with the pairing shown in the middle, click Add to Sketchbook to save the new block in your project.

Click BLOCK > Serendipity > Clip and Flip.

This feature takes the upper-left quadrant of the selected block and flips and rotates it in multiple directions in the other three quadrants of the block. Choose one of the Sketchbook blocks in the left column and then experiment with the flipping option buttons under the large block. When you are happy with the block shown, click Add to Sketchbook.

Try out the other Serendipity options for more block fun! If you’d like more information about any of the Serendipity features, just click the Help button that appears on each Serendipity window.
