How did you decide to make quiltmaking a career? What led you in that direction?

I had a successful career in music. As my quilting escalated, I began seeing ways in which my musical talent and quilting skills could be combined into one passion for quilting escalated, I began seeing ways in which my musical talent and quilting skills could be combined into one career. Knowing that quilters are the best folks on the planet, deciding to make the career change was very easy.

What inspires your work? How do new ideas come to you in quiltmaking?

I tend to be inspired by life experiences. I am inspired by colors, nature, works of others, and the sheer pleasure of designing and creating quilts.

In Quiltmaker, you are listed as a Texas musician, a quilter and a teacher. Those things are all so different -- how is your time divided?

Well, I was born a Texan, so that was first. Music was second and quilting came along unexpectedly. Naturally, being a Texan is not something I have to devote time to. As a musician, I play music as often as I can, at home, and in performance situations. Most of those performances are for quilters. Since 1998, I have produced 4 musical recordings. I spend the most of my time quilting -- making quilts, teaching workshops, presenting lectures, designing and writing.

If you could offer one piece of advice for quiltmakers today, what would it be?

Do the best you can. Don't compare your work to others if doing so doesn't encourage you to excel. Be proud of what you do. It is a testament to your life and will provide insight into your life for all those who follow.
