Patterns and directions for this double comforter Bluebird quilt are given in QM's All-Time Favorites--Fall '01. As a bonus to our web site visitors, we've designed this beautiful wall quilt from one block plus borders that feature appliqued and quilted leaves. Use the patterns on the special issue insert for this project. If you need a copy, check your local newsstand, or to order by phone, call 800-590-3465. Outside the U.S., call 720-836-1123.

For more detailed instructions on each step of the quiltmaking process, see our Basic Lessons.

Making the Top

Applique the patches on A in alphabetical order using a blind stitch. Then centering the motif, trim A to 13 1/2" x 13 1/2".

For mitered borders, join the corresponding border 1, 2 and 3 strips to make 4 border units. Matching centers, sew the border units to A and miter the corners. Trim the seam allowances to 1/4" and press open.

Position and applique the C/Cr's along the mitered seam lines of border 2 as shown.

Quilting and Finishing

Mark a line 1" in from the border 1 seam lines on A. Mark the remaining parallel lines 1" apart. Mark the Bluebird Quilting in border 2.

Layer and baste together the lining, batting and quilt top. Quilt the marked motifs and quilt the applique and borders in the ditch.

Enclose the edges of the quilt with binding. Add a sleeve to the lining to display your Bluebird.
