Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins
What inspires your work? How do new ideas come to you in quiltmaking?
It'll probably sound too easy, but we walk around with our eyes open. We are always paying attention to what things make us smile, what things make us stop for a second look. We notice the colors of things -- the sky, flowers, leaves, buildings, dirt. You have to be open to the next idea.
We are often inspired by antique quilts and old fabric. So many of these designs can be traced back to other art forms. They are classic. We made a promise to ourselves early on that we would only spend time making quilts that we wanted to make. We still stick to that rule. So we pay attention to what it is we are drawn to make. Right now, we are both wanting to piece some quilts. So soon you'll be seeing piecing -- mixed with applique, of course!
You are fabric designers. What are you working on now? Any new projects in fabric design and/orquilting?
We are always working on something new! We are working on a collection of plaids and a collection of prints with P&B Textiles that should be out in the fall.
Our first collection of plaids came out about a year ago and they are great. These plaids have the feel of regular cotton cloth. They are neither too light nor too coarse. P&B did a great job! Linda and I both love working with plaids and stripes and they can be so hard to find. We can't wait to have more.
The collection of prints will go with the plaids. They make you think of old fabric -- but in newer colors!
If you could offer one piece of advice for quiltmakers today, what would it be?
Make the quilts you want to make -- it's so much more fun than struggling through a quilt you don't enjoy. Your quilts are your legacy, so always do your best work.
